Can you see my photo bombing dog's reflection?

It was certainly a challenge earlier in the week to work around our stormy weather and heavy rains.  Tuesday night, I was able to hop in the pool for a short swim between storms.  I find swimming at night so peaceful -- probably because no one is doing yard work or using their incessant saws, drills, power tools or other noise polluting machinery.   {Rant over.}  The water was nippy so I wore my wet suit (right side out this time!).  I was shocked at how much easier it is to swim with it on.  It was cool to be able to record my heart rate with the Blink 3.0.

A break in the rain Wednesday morning

Saturday, I ran into my friend Barbara at the park and we ran the last few miles of my long run together.  This gal is super speedy and always beats me at the local races.  After suffering a hip fracture during a January half marathon, I truly admire her pluck and determination to come back to running.

With less than two weeks now remaining until the Utah Valley Half Marathon, the training is mostly over.  Honestly, I'm still struggling to come back from my latest injury.  I'm not sure why it feels extra tough this time.  It could just be bad timing as our humidity is sucking the life right out of my runs.  But, I will do the best I can and look forward to the beautiful downhill canyon course in Provo and meeting a few bloggers as well.

I hope everyone is enjoying their Memorial Day holiday weekend and unofficial start to summer. Patriotic holidays always make me think of my Dad who served in World War II.  The weather was iffy around here today but we managed to get to the lake between showers..  We also had our typical crazy backyard BBQ Sunday afternoon with a menagerie of dogs, grand kids, and adults.  Actually...that was just us!

And that's a wrap!

How did you celebrate Memorial Day?

When and what is your next event?

  1. We actually have had decent weather this weekend. There was rain in the forecast, but it has skipped over us (at least in the daylight hours). My Memorial Day celebration will involve a short group run int eh morning, and LOTS of garden squats thereafter. Have a great Memorial Day ;-)

    1. A group run sounds fun. I've been doing a few of those garden squats myself this weekend! I'm afraid I've been neglecting my yard lately.

  2. I used to love water skiing and have not done it in forever! It's so much fun right? Thanks for the linkup

    1. I think so. I certainly don't see many people doing it, at least not on the lake we go to. I'm probably telling my age. LOL.

  3. LOL on your family being the source of all the chaos - sounds like good fun, though! I've done a surprising amount of shopping this weekend -- I found a lot at REI that I didn't need but couldn't resist on sale!

    1. The backyard events are quite the chaos. And there's a new puppy in the mix that only adds to that.

  4. The humidity can be so brutal! We've had rain here ALL week, but were blessed with sunny weather this weekend. We're back to rain all day tomorrow :(

I don't have any special plans for Memorial Day. Your backyard BBQ sounds super fun!

    1. I'm going outside between rain showers today to work and play. But, it is SO STEAMY. How can it not rain?

  5. Thank you for letting us know who the guest host will be in the following weeks. I make my post up aead of time and last week I didn't know Wendy was a host. Sorry.
I can't wait to follow along with you all out in Utah!

    1. No problem! We realized people would not know in advance about the first guest host. I plan to list the upcoming hosts from now here on. I look forward to Utah's low humidity!

  6. It's still SO darn rainy here, although it looks like we didn't get half of what they forecast for this weekend. Shhhh. The buoyancy of a wetsuit is probably my favorite thing about triathlon. Ok finishing the swim is. Thanks for the linkup!

    1. If I can to come out of that thing in T1 -- it would take me forever! HA HA HA. All of my Tris has been in hot weather so far.

  7. Yes the humidity down here has been awful except for the end of the week! I am sad to see more rain for the week. We just bought two more kayaks and wanted to take them out on the lake today. Great job on your miles and workouts! You look great water skiing!!

    1. Kayaking sounds like fun. Hopefully you'll get a break in this weather. It is off and on here. As soon as I go out, it clouds up and rains, then the sun comes back out. Repeat.

  8. Great job getting some runs and swims and skiing in between rain storms! Hope it's great weather for you tomorrow!

    1. At this point, I'll just take the low humidity. The scenery and the downhill course will be bonuses.

  10. Same event as you. :) Hopefully I'll see you! And after that, Father's Day -- then nothing for a while. Which I think I'm ready for. Believe it or not, it's almost Bandit's 1 yr adoptaversary.

Glad you were able to get some water therapy. My dad is also a WWII vet. He was just a kid; it boggles my mind.

    1. I'm sure I'll see you in Utah! I'm flying in last minute but plan to stay and sight see afterwards. A lot of those men were so young when they served in WWII. My Dad couldn't talk about it without getting choked up.

  11. I so wish I was running with you in Utah. You're my spirit animal--as weird as that sounds. Sigh.

We'll have waterskiing in August! I need to start looking at flights. I can't wait!

    1. We'd have fun in Utah. I'd drag you zip lining -- but up sure you'd be up for that. You'll definitely be with me in spirit(s). LOL. Now I've got to come up with our animal...

  12. The heat and humidity was back with a vengeance here this weekend... brutal. I don't have anything "official" on my race calendar until October, but I need to get signed up for a couple of 5ks this summer.

    1. I don't have anything on my calendar after Utah for a few months. I may throw in a tri or two or a summer 5k but will mostly take advantage of my running off season. But, I'll water ski as much as I can.

    1. You too! I didn't realize you were going until a couple of weeks ago. I wonder if there's anyone else I don't know about?

  14. I'll miss you in Utah. At least I'll see you in Vegas.

Still chilly here and we are able to go boating and BBQ with our friends. The water temp is 50. At this rate, it won't be warm enough until Aug.

I have some local short races. Nothing big until the fall.

    1. Our water temp was 79 yesterday when I skied. That actually still feels pretty cool to me, but bearable. As fast as this year is going, Vegas will be here in a blink!

  15. I too am having a more than usual difficult time coming back from injury ...age perhaps? Say it isn't so! But I am so excited to meet you in person over dinner and a glass of wine!

I am mucho impressed with your water skiing skills! I think I may have gotten up on one ski once in my lifetime but I can say that I have a cool skiing story in that I actually learned to water ski on the Mississippi River behind a green fishing boat! :)

Thankful for your Dad's service to this great nation Holly! Have a wonderful day tomorrow.

    1. I always thought water skiing to be a southern thing, but it really isn't. It was a huge sport back in the 70s/80s (and before) all over the country. I think it's actually making somewhat of a comeback. I can't wait to meet you -- although as I've said, it feels we are already friends.

    1. Last year when I was training for sprint triathlons, I swam a lot of evenings about 90 minutes after supper. Sometimes, I would catch the sunset. That was always special.

  18. Great job this week! Swimming at night does sound peaceful. We went to my parents yesterday to celebrate Memorial Day but we were stuck inside because it was raining and chilly. As much as I know I will complain about the heat and humidity, I'm ready for summer weather.

    1. Well, it is horrible for my running but fantastic for water activities. So, I shouldn't complain either!

  19. Water skiing looks like so much fun- great way to cross train. I don't think I'd want to swim at night... most everyone I know who swims goes super duper early in the morning!

    1. There's just something about water skiing I adore. I wouldn't like swimming in a public place, but I love paddling around at night in my own yard.

  20. The heat and humidity feels especially brutal right now - not sure if I'm just having a hard time adjusting to it or if it's really that bad. I'm super jealous of your upcoming race - oh to get to run in a cool climate in JUNE!!! You're going to do great. :)

  27. I had a very stormy Saturday from Boulder to Denver, but once that system moved out, it's been gorgeous since. Makes sense too, I'm done with training and the weather will probably have great afternoons instead of the rain I was dealing with.

  28. Night time swimming sounds fantastic and very peaceful. I've not been swimming in ages but at my local pool there was a 30 minute slot between two classes that was always really peaceful. Often it was just me swimming! I think most people want to swim for longer but I'm happy with a quiet 30 minutes.
