Five Things About Me

It's Friday and time to link up with the DC Trifecta.  Thanks to Eat Pray Run DCYou Signed Up For What?!, & Mar on the Run! for hosting the Friday Five.  Please visit their websites and check out all of the other bloggers who participated.  You'll probably find some you'd like to follow.

Today's topic is Five Things About Me.  Here goes nothing...

I  AM  A  ...

1)  Water Skier

We had a river cabin (shack really) when I was growing up.  My sister, brothers, and cousin were all attempting to ski.  I was absolutely terrified.  My mother eventually bribed me that if I tried, she would take me to Six Flags -- just me and a friend, no siblings!  That did it.  I got up on the first try, and never looked back.  I was 10 years old.  She made good on her promise.  Hands down, it will always be my favorite thing.  Unfortunately, it is a seasonal activity and also one where you are totally dependent on someone else.  Bless my husband for dragging me around the lake countless times when I know he would have rather been doing something else.  Oh, and it's one excellent thing to look forward to in the sweltering southern summer.

It simply gets no better than this...

2)  Wife / Mother / Grandmother / Daughter / Sister / Niece / M-I-L / D-I-L / S-I-L / Friend

The labels that need no explanation but are truly the most important.

3)  Pianist

I took lessons from age 5 on up and graduated from the National Piano Guild.   And no, I don't even know what that means.  In my youth, I wanted to play for the symphony when I grew up.  {Bahahaha}  Oh my, how things change.  Over the years, I've played for churches and weddings but never a funeral.  Now I play only occasionally during the year, but I will play during the holidays.

Good and Bold

4)  Coffee Lover

Want to grab a cup?  Just ask.  Starbucks, quaint local coffee shop,  home brewed Keurig, or heck -- even work coffee.  It doesn't really matter.  Speaking of Keurig, does anyone else like Dark Magic?  Problems are solved and plans are made over a cup (or two) of coffee.

5)  Person Who Runs...

After running 7 years and completing over 125 races so far, I still do not call myself a Runner.  I don't know why.  (This drives my kids insane --- oh, maybe that's why!)  Perhaps because it's a title I reserve for the elite, even though it is the activity I most identify with and I'm utterly lost if I can't do it.   I once thought if I raced a certain distance, or reached a certain milestone or pace, I would earn that title.  I RUN.  Yet, I am still not a Runner.  (However, whatever you do...do NOT call me a jogger!)  I probably need professional therapy...or maybe just good friends and a good cup of coffee!

Tell me something about YOU!

  1. Water skiing scares me. I am alww afraid that I am going to wipe out and hurt myself. I love my coffee but I am not a big fan of dark roasts. -L

    1. I've wiped out a few times and live to tell about it! I can't imagine life without coffee.

  2. Haha, I know what you mean about the "Runner" thing. Even though I just completed a marathon I don't feel like I am a "real" runner. I think maybe that is because I didn't grow up as a runner like my sister did ( having done it through high school and all). But in anycase, we all run!
Water skiing looks cool but I would be too scared to try it! -M

    1. It's nice to know I'm not the only one that feels this way. Maybe it is because I didn't run when I was younger. I hadn't thought about that. Yes, we run!

  3. Haha, that's awesome a bribe made you a water skier, and you got up on the first try. I tried water skiing once in high school and it took me a few tries. But it was fun. You are a RUNNER. Someone who runs is a runner. :)

    1. You can call me a runner, but I can't. I know, I need therapy! LOL

  4. Soooo with you on #4. At least two cups a day over here!

    1. At least. How can you not? If they banned coffee, I'd have a serious problem.

  5. I sort of waterskied once, on a muddy "lake" down near Houston. It was more I got dragged behind a boat on a board and managed to get to my knees, but hey, I took the risk when someone invited me!

    1. I love to try new things. It doesn't mean you have to like everything, just try. You'll never know if you don't, right?

  6. I live in Florida, so I have had lots of opportunities to learn to water ski but I just could not get vertical on those things!! In a strange turn of events, I do love snow skiing though!

    1. I love snow skiing too. But, it is not as convenient...it requires a vacation. My last trip was to CO and we had a blast.

  7. I remember the first time I got up successfully on water skis when I was at camp...man that was a GOOD day! They announced all the campers that either got up on 1 ski or 1 skis for the first time and you had to stand on the table during lunch in the cafeteria and the whole camp cheered for you. Made you feel pretty awesome! :) -C

    1. That just gave me chills! How awesome the camp did that for you. A very special day!

    1. I love to just be around water. I don't necessarily have to be in it!

  9. So very much not a water skier! That photo of you is awesome - you look fearless! I love these Five Things posts, you just never know what you'll learn. :)

  10. I love waterskiing. But I broke my foot waterskiing and haven't skied since. Also now I can't bend my ankle enough to do it. I run too. 7 years and as many races as you.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Ouch! I know after having ankle surgery, it was difficult to ski that summer. I couldn't jump in the water. No spring in that ankle for a while. WE RUN! Ha. I'd call you a Runner!

  11. I don't do water sports but I can float. Put me in an inflated tube and I can float all day.

    1. The best nap ever is in the pool on a float...just sayin'.

  12. Oh, my gosh! I love water skiing; I have never been snow skiing (and the thought kind of terrifies me!), but I'll get into a pair of water skis anyday. I, too, went through the National Piano Guild (it's on one of my "about me" posts somewhere!) but, unfortunately, do not keep up with piano-playing anymore. I'd love to get back into it, but I just don't have a great place to play. These are wonderful tidbits; love your post! Oh, and you are most definitely a runner. :) Hope you have a great weekend!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I've never met anyone else that did "the guild". Ha. Playing the piano was such an important thing at one time in my life. I can go a year and not touch it now. Strange. You can call me a Runner :) I just can't. Therapy, please...

  13. It's great that you can go water-skiing and that your husband takes you out on the water. I water-skiied when I was young and loved it!

    1. Yeah, major props to the hubs for driving the boat all these years. He loves speed, so it is sort of up his alley anyway.

  14. I just started attempting to water ski two summers ago! I've only been able to try about 4 times and I have yet to be able to get out of the water for longer than a second, although I am improving. I think it's something I would enjoy once I get the hang of it eventually!

    1. Keep at it! It is wonderful cardio and killer upper body workout! You can't touch me on Mondays during the summer. So incredibly sore after the weekend.

  15. Wow, 125 races is a huge accomplishment! You are DEFINITELY a runner! I would love to try water-skiing...I love adventurous activities!

    1. Me too. It's all about adventure. I guess in some respects, I'm an adrenaline junky.

  16. My husband really loves the Dark Magic K-cup - he said the Keurig doesn't make it strong enough & that dark stuff makes up for it :)

    1. He is right on the money. You've got to get a very strong K-cup to make decent coffee.

    1. I think it tells my age. No one does it anymore...just wake boarding and wake surfing.

  18. Loved this post--very interesting! It is so funny that you call yourself a person who runs and not a runner. I don't know that I would intro myself to someone as a runner (also because non-runners don't care about running!) but I think I do identify myself internally as a runner. I'm proud to be part of the running community! I have never water skiied but it looks cool! And probably a great workout too!

    1. I know, weird. You are right...non-runners don't care and they'll call you a jogger! I do feel part of the running community. I RUN. I LOVE RUNNING. You can't imagine the workout you get from waterskiing. I wish I could do it all year long.

  19. you are a RUNNER! and a lot of other awesome things -- thanks for linking up :)

    ReplyDelete
  20. You are TOTALLY A RUNNER! And I'm 150% with you on the whole coffee thing. Anything can solved over a cup of a coffee! :) I've tried water skiing a few times at a friends cottage and I enjoy it when I can actually get up, ha ha. I've fallen on my face more times than I care to admit. Doesn't stop me from trying though!

    1. Coffee is a must. It is awesome that you fall and continue to try. Falling is just part of it :) I've had my share.

  21. Wow, you have run so many races and yes, you are a runner. I love the water skiing photo, I love water skiing, but haven't done input in about 5 years.

    1. Thankfully, I am able to this fairly often (at least in the summer). I also love to snow ski but it is very rare I get that opportunity.

  22. I haven't waterskiied in forever. I would absolutely love to go out when I was a teenager. But it's literally been almost two decades since I've been on the lake. I don't even know if I could do it again. lol I'd love to try

    1. Sure you could. It's one of those things you pick right back up with. Your muscles may not forgive you, but you'll remember how. LOL.

    1. Oh, good. I'm glad I'm not the only one. Want to go to therapy with me?

  24. Love that you waterski! I have done it a few times off and on through the years. I can get up and most the time can stay up. But I can't do any tricks and I am not a pro, but that's probably because I don't own a boat and only go when my friends a few times a year:) But it is so fun, I think it's awesome when people can get up and just relax and enjoy it!
You are definitely a RUNNER, LOL
But I know what you mean, I had a gal tell me I was a professional runner once, I corrected her and said, not even close. She repeated my history and said that I was. I said, nope experienced but until you see me running with the elites in NYC or Boston, professional isn't a title I associate with myself:)
If someone calls me a jogger I want to smack them, LOL In fact a lady the other day says to me, so I hear you jog marathons is that right right? I said Nope, I RUN marathons, big difference... She asked me what the difference was, I said the 1980's.. She laughed, but I was totally serious:)

    1. I certainly can't do any tricks on waterskis, just old school slalom. Just went to the doc yesterday for my yearly checkup. "Are you still jogging?" Argh! Love your comment about the 1980s. I'll have to remember that one. See, I should have said, "Not since 1983!"

  25. I just got my Keurig and am excited to try some different kinds! I'll have to look into that one! :-)

    1. If you like strong coffee, it's good. There are a lot of great options. The hot chocolate is good too.

  26. I love that water skiing story! I tried once and just could not get up for some reason. I still had fun though :) I'm getting a keurig soon and excited about trying the different options.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I love my Keurig. It does brew a weak cup in my opinion (even with the small cup option) so that's why I use a dark or bold coffee.

      Delete
  27. You know I'm a waterskiier too? I didn't put that as my 5 things bc I thought everyone knew that....LOL! I love that I can still get up on 1 ski. :)

    1. I remember that from when I found your blog b/c it's so rare to find someone who still does it...not that we are OLD or anything. We should be proud! I can ski forever without stopping. It's an awesome workout that I wish I could do year round.

  31. Oh come on: what will it take for you to consider yourself a runner?? Yeah I've never been water skiing. It's the whole water thing. But I'm conquering that fear this year, right?

    1. At least with water skiing, you get to wear a ski vest. No real swimming required. I love that you are conquering your fear!

  32. I've never been water skiing, but I do love body boarding. I also secretly wish my parents would've made me take piano lessons. My husband plays beautifully and I'm always jealous. :)

    3. I'm with your kids - you ARE a RUNNER! :-)

I used to water ski in college, but haven't had the opportunity for years. It was so fun!

    4. I admitted to needing therapy :) I'll own it one day. I wish I could ski all year. Great cross training!
