Fitbit Fanatic

Saturday morning was the scheduled Jubilee 8k Run For Cancer.  After being sick with a nasty cold for 10 days I thought I'd be OK to give it a whirl.  My plan was to treat it like a slow training run if I didn't feel well...and I didn't.  Before I could get through the first mile, my lungs felt sore.  I guess I wasn't quite over the crud.  It was also very warm and humid so I'm not sure I could have run very fast anyway.

I also participated in the 1 mile memorial walk/run to honor those we've lost to cancer.  There have been quite a few in my family.  I was satisfied to complete 6 miles.  Admittedly, I ate a huge White Chocolate Macadamia cookie as a consolation prize.  Remember the old adage, "Feed a cold, starve a fever?"

I surely need some Fitbit bling!

I finally swapped the Fitbit I received as a Mother's Day present and started wearing it Saturday afternoon.  I love this little strip of black rubber!  I ran Sunday morning with it and checked my heart rate periodically.  I never liked the chest strap monitor than came with my Garmin.  However, the Fitbit Charge HR is just awesome!  Along with lots of other information, the app also told me how much time I spent at peak HR, aerobic HR and fat burning HR during my run.  Don't you just love all that data?  It was also a nice little surprise to receive an alert that I had already reached 10,000 steps around 9:00 in the morning!  {Score!}

I was pleased and encouraged that my 5 mile run on Sunday felt much better than the day before.  My marathon training starts in a few weeks and until then I'm still taking it easy.  No long runs!  I'm also working on strengthening my hips, but the exercises are making my hips sore (obviously a Catch 22).

It's definitely summer where I live!

I continued to work in my back yard.   I would like to have everything looking neat and tidy by the coming Memorial Day weekend.  If the weather cooperates, that is where we will be for three days...except we might hopefully skip off to the lake for a little water skiing too.   It's time!

Are you a Fitbit Fanatic?  What do you like?  Any tips?

Did anyone race this weekend?  If not, what did you do?

  1. Looks like the water will not be warm enough for waterskiing up here in the north woods. :( I did buy some kayaks, so I'm excited about getting out on the water that way, at least!!!

    1. Kayaks sound like a lot of fun! I've always wanted to do that. As long as I'm around the water, doing anything, I'm happy.

  2. I don't have a fitbit but my mom is obsessed with hers! My sister also has one and they always compete against eachother in walking challenges. This one sounds great and I love how it gives you heart rate information!

    1. I wouldn't wear it without the heart rate info. That's the best part for me. I also like the sleep information.

  3. I have never used a fit but I know many people who love with bc of all the data it has to offer. I have a GPS and for me I'm just fine with that. Hope you fully recover well and are able to start your marathon training off with a good start.

    1. On runs, I wear my GPS with it! I love the convenience of the heart rate info without wearing a chest strap.

  4. Oh I love my Fitbit! I get pretty into the challenges on it, it's a lot of fun especially when your competitive, even if you're just competing with yourself:) My sisters and all my friends, we absolutely love them!
Hope you get over all the crud soon! I have been sick off and on myself over the past month and it's just no fun to run with!
I think you're leading into your marathon training with a great start, and hopefully you're body (despite the cold) is enjoying a little rest first too!

    1. They do motivate you to take a few more steps. I find the sleep information to be very interesting. The convenience of heart rate monitoring on your wrist is awesome.

  5. I was wearing a FItbit plus another tracker for awhile. Now I don't wear them. I know I get my activity in. I hope that crud clears!

    1. I wasn't too concerned with the activity tracking part (although that is fun) but LOVE the heart rate monitoring. The sleep information is very interesting too.

  6. I have the Fitbit Charge HR too and I love it! I have a desk job so sit a lot during the day. I like the activity tracker because it really does help me get up and walk around every hour. I like checking the sleep data too.

    1. The sleep information is very cool. I'm a little shocked at how much time it thinks I'm restless during the night. Wow.

  7. Water skiing?!? I'm so jealous! I haven't been water skiing in quite some time; I'm ready for some lake time, H! I have an UP24 by Jawbone; I love it and I'm totally addicted to all of the info I receive, but I really like this new HR option. I do a lot of sitting at my job (get tied in to lots of computer-related tasks), so this also reminds me (I set an alarm) to get up and move around every once in awhile. I'm so glad you had a nice weekend and I hope you're feeling better. Thanks so much for linking up with the blog!

    1. The UP24 is much more stylish! Of course now I need Fitbit jewelry. LOL! I have to remember to get up and move around at work, especially on Mondays!

  8. I'm very pleased it shows how much time you spend in different heart rate zones. I hope it will help me slow my long runs down so I don't run them in peak zone. I hope the hip work gets easier. I can't run long with sore hips.

  9. Christine enjoys her Fitbit, but may not have purchased one. She won it in a contest at work! Spring has arrived where we are too and the flowers and shrubbery look so pretty. Glad you were able to get in the miles, and hopefully you will continue to feel better.

    1. I saw her post with the Fitbit jewelry picture. So now I've got to look into that! That's a great thing to win! I hope I am on the mend. It has been so long since I've been sick enough for it to matter.

  10. I don't have a fitbit but am considering it. Which one did you get ? Do you really like it ? Is it not too gadgety ?

    1. I have the Fitbit Charge HR. It's very simple. I chose this one because of the heart rate monitor. You can see simple data on your wrist at any time and much more detailed info on your PC or phone. I do like it!!

  11. I don't have a FitBit, but that's so cool that you can check HR data so easily! Does it record mileage or do you also wear your Garmin to track mileage?

    1. It does track mileage but I assume by using the number of steps, not GPS. I did wear my Garmin (I can't not wear it!). I didn't carry my phone but it syncs to it once you open the app. So cool. I don't think I've scratched the surface of what it will do. If you want data just for a run, you start an activity. The pic above is from when I got up to a good while after my run. I didn't single out the activity like I should have. The HR part of it is AWESOME.

  12. I don't have a fit bit but after your post I sorta want one!! Love all that data!

I skipped racing this weekend. I sort of have a love-hate relationship with it.

    1. The data is so cool! I completely understand the love-hate relationship. I'm not loving the 5ks races as much as I used to.

  13. I tried the Fit Bit Charge HR and really loved it but decided to return it. I felt like my money could be spent better elsewhere only because I'm always training for a marathon, so I feel like I didn't really "need" it. Now, I really want to trade in my GPS watch for one that has a HR monitor in the wrist because I really want it just for the HR data!

    1. I'd been looking at it forever and would never buy it. Because it was a gift, it gave me more justification to keep. LOL. I really am using it for heart rate info because I don't like my old Garmin's strap. The new Garmin with wrist HR looks incredible. I'm going to have to wait a while for that!

  14. I love my Fitbit! I have just the basic one but have been thinking about stepping up to the fancier one. I do not monitor my heart rate at all and maybe this is something I should look at???? We need to be Fitbit friends!

    1. I got this one because of the HR info. I don't like running with the chest straps. We can absolutely be Fitbit friends!

  15. I've heard so many awesome things about the FitBit. I'd love to try it sometime! Maybe I'll put in a suggestion for one as a birthday present this year. :)
Sorry about the cold, I had a loooong lingering one last month...sometimes they just don't quit! Hope you have a great week!

    1. It would definitely make a great birthday present. I rarely get sick, but when I do it seems to last forever!

  16. I love my fitbit but it doesn't have the HR monitor. Wow I would love a new one with that, it's really cool it tells you all that stuff! I didn't like the chest straps either.

    1. I honestly wanted it just for the HR info. But, the whole steps thing is kinda fun too. You are killing it on your steps! The sleep information is very interesting.
