Coffee Talk (June Edition)

It's Saturday morning.  Let's settle in, have coffee and chat for a while!

Over Coffee...I would tell you how much I've enjoyed cooking with my crock pot recently.  I found a recipe (I think on Coco's blog -- thanks Coco!) where you cover chicken breast with salsa.  I've also used pork chops and both are delicious.  Well, this week I was cooking chicken with pineapple salsa.  I was so looking forward to this meal with brown rice, broccoli and glazed carrots.  Yum!  I get home and lift the lid for an aromatic whiff.  What?  Raw chicken? Crockpot on ... oh ... it's not plugged in.  Geez.

A good day -- only one finger affected!

Over Coffee...I would explain how one thing I enjoy about summer is how much better my Raynaud's Syndrome is.  For those of you not familiar, it is where your fingers (or toes) lose blood and become numb and useless.  It is caused by cold temperatures or stress.  I usually lose the sensation of my middle three fingers and wake them up by holding them under hot water.

The only trigger I have in summer is the grocery store aka Frozen World.  Unfortunately, I visit Frozen World 2 or 3 times a week.  I'm very fortunate this never happens during a run.  My fingers may go numb from standing around before a cold race (or after I finish) but apparently the increased blood circulation while running keeps mine at bay.  If I could only run through the grocery store at a nice 9:00 pace...

Could a blackberry get any bigger?
Over Coffee...I would ask if you like the humongous blackberries that are in the supermarkets right now.  And how about the Ranier cherries?  Both of these are so good.

Over Coffee...I'd tell you I feel better about my running.  I'm not so much in a funk any more.  Yes, my speed is still slow and I expect it to remain that way during the heat and humidity of summer.  But, I have more energy.  I feel better.  Well...except for my cranky right hip.  Why is there always something?  Could it be the result of too many Fitbit steps?  Eek!  I'm not even going there!

What would you tell me over coffee?

    1. I am not a fan of cherries but I do like these. They have a peachy flavor.

  2. I'm glad you like that recipe - crazy simple as long as you plug the crockpot in. ;-) I hate how cold grocery stores are!

    1. Yep, the hardest thing about that recipe is USING THE PLUG. I texted one of my kids during the day to check on it too. He said the chicken was soft and he thought it was done. Sigh.

  3. I have Raynaud's too - grocery stores are my nemesis in the summer!

    1. Isn't it awful? I think it has something to do with gripping the buggy too. In the winter, I will get it while driving.

  4. I've never forgotten to turn it on funny! I think I have a touch of that too with my fingers turning white. It's weird huh? Thanks for linking up with us today I love the coffee dates!

    1. That was a first for me too. That's what I get for being in a rush that morning.

    1. Maybe we expect it to turn itself on?? I cooked the chicken anyway and gave it to the dogs. They enjoyed it.

  6. I've done that with the crock pot before. So frustrating because not only are you without dinner, you've wasted that food! Ugh!

    1. I'm so glad I'm not alone. It broke my heart to waste that food. Chicken breasts are not cheap.

  7. oh sister I have crock pot stories.......UGG! Ok- I just looked at your fitbit steps- you need to sit down! I will never catch up! I have never seen that with the fingers before? Have a super rest of the weekend!

    1. I was determined to win the FitBit challenge this week. I'll probably never do it again. LOL. My dogs sure enjoyed their nightly walks. Raynauds is strange. We went on a trip to DC last year. It was so cold and I could not keep them awake. That's all I remember about the trip.

  8. Those blackberries and cherries look amazing! When I increased my fitbit steps last month to consistently get 10,000 per day, my knee did start to hurt more. But it got better once my body got used to it.

    1. Isn't that little tracker so addictive? But fun too. I admit I'm resting today. It will be a low step day for me!

  9. I have some friends who have that same issue in their fingers. Their daughter has to wear really good gloves/mittens in the winter when she runs outside.

    1. I run with gloves in the Winter. I keep them in the car too. One of my Winter triggers is driving.

  10. I love cooking chicken and salsa in the crockpot! Sometimes I just use chicken stock too. Best and easiest meal! I never heard of Raynaud's Syndrome. That's so interesting! I'm sure it's not at all fun to experience though...

    1. I guess I need a sticky note on my crock pot! Raynaud's is not extremely painful but more of an annoyance than anything else.

  11. I have Raynauds but not as extreme as yours. My fingertips get numb if I don't warm them up after a run...It's super painful...

    1. Mine is really not extremely painful. But it's just so irritating when your hands won't work. My previous office building had no hot water. In Winter, I'd come back from running errands or whatnot and have to use the hot water from the coffee maker to wake them up. So inconvenient. I worked in that building 5 years!

  12. I LOVE pineapple salsa, so that sounds really good (with the crockpot on of course ;)...haha but that is totally something I would do too :)

  13. I just decided I definitely need to grab some black berries next time I am at the store!
I have never heard of that hand syndrome, but I am really glad to hear that it's getting better for you! You know you probably could run through the store, I mean, how much fun would it be to get looks like maybe you're crazy or a thief on the run, LOL

    1. I've had Raynauds probably 7 years. It's so much better in summer. I'd love to run through the store. If I could get someone to throw the items in the buggy that would be awesome.

  14. That's too funny about the crockpot! I don't cook much with one during the summer, but I burn it up in the winter.

My best friend has Raynaud's too. Hers doesn't bother her as often as it sounds like yours does.

And WHY do grocery stores do that?!?! There's no reason the whole store should be that cold!!!

    1. I had not been using my crock pot much. Now I've got to remember to turn it on! I'm guessing grocery stores don't need A/C with all the open freezers and coolers!

  15. Mmmm berries are delish right now! Glad the Raynauds doesn't hurt when you run. always mean to use my crock pot more but never do.

    1. I just bought more huge blackberries. Try the chicken. It's delicious and easy. Just plug yours in.

  16. I love my slow cooker, too! Tonight I've got barbeque pulled chicken on tap. Very similar to the salsa recipe - I just dump in some chicken breasts with chopped onions and barbeque sauce, and voila! Bummer about yours not being plugged in that one day, too. That has happened to me in the past and it's so frustrating.

Rainier cherries are my FAVORITE, too. I bought a big bag of them yesterday afternoon, and no joke - I already finished the entire bag by last night!

    1. I'm going to try the BBQ chicken. Clean up is a pain. I need to find the liners I've heard people talking about.

  17. My fingers used to do that when I ran in the winter... I fixed that. I quit running in the cold :) haha

  18. I've never heard of that syndrome but it doesn't sound fun! I can just imagine you zooming down the aisles, grabbing fruit and coffee as you go! That fruit does look really delicious as well :)

    1. I would really enjoy zooming down the aisles! I don't like going anyway and that would make it so much quicker.

  19. I have it as well, and it makes grocery shopping so difficult. I actually enjoy winter (that is the only time you'll hear me say that) because I can keep my gloves on and people won't look at me like a freak.

  20. My fingers have never done that until right at the end of this winter poof, two of my fingers turned white after a cold run, and it really wasn't all that cold out.
Cherries are my favorite, I eat them by the bag!
