Five Runfessions (June 2015 Edition)

I runfess...

I did what I usually consider a big no-no for me.  While we were at the beach, I ran in just a bra (and shorts, people!).  I've done it before.  It's the only place I feel comfortable enough to expose the jiggle in the middle.  I think it's just so hot, I don't give a horse's patoot.  Besides, nobody knows me there.  I have a hard time finding a good spot to clip my Shuffle though.  I forgot and only packed one pair of shorts with a pocket.  I usually don't run with my phone, but feel it's best in unfamiliar places.  So I had to wear the same pair every day.  Ask me how many times I washed them.  Go ahead...

I runfess...

I'm without a hairstyle.  I run most weekday mornings in the HHH  (hellacious heat & humidity).  After showering, I'm melting and loathe the thought of being under the heat of a blow dryer for 15 minutes (uber-thick hair!).  Air dry and a barrette it is.  I did the same lazy thing last summer.

My M-I-L gave me this barrette umpteen years ago.  It's the only one I've ever found that will hold all of my hair.  It's pewter and I love it, but I wear it every day.  I WILL care about my appearance again one day.  I will...when it cools off.  My hairdresser would be mortified.

I runfess...

I'm not a fan of Walmart, never have been.  (Hold the hate mail, please.)  I rarely go, but there is one very close to my office and I went this week.  {Heavy Sigh}  I'm trying very hard to find the good in this experience.  So...I will say, I had the best buggy ever!  Even with a 32 pack of water, it was easily maneuverable with one hand.  You see, one-handedness is very important.  I need to be able to swing my Fitbit arm freely.  Since the two items I needed were on opposite corners of the mega store, I was determined to count those steps -- 2,000 by the way.

I runfess...

Hooray!

I found yet another almond butter flavor to be addicted to.

I runfess...

If you told me I'd be on this crazy running journey 10 years ago (the Friday Five topic this week) I would have been rolling in the floor with laughter.   Who, me?  Are you kidding?

But 140 races later -- including 36 half marathons -- it's not funny.

It's a way of life.

Do you have anything you need to Runfess?

I'm also linking up for Friday Five where you'll see what everyone was up to 10 years ago.
I have no doubt there will be many great stories.

  1. If my hair didn't turn into a white girl afro when it air dries, I would never blow dry it! I have to dry it and flat iron it after every wash. That's the only part of this whole return to running thing I'm not digging--more showers!

    1. Oh the years we spent perming it and the years we've spent straightening it. I used to keep a very layered style that required a lot of work. I threw my curling iron and hairspray in the drawer one morning and said NO MORE. That was about 7 years ago. It was pretty freeing.

  2. I knew I liked you! I'm not a fan of WalMart at all. Altho when we go to Florida, it can be a lifesaver.

    1. I play a game where I try to go a whole year without stepping foot inside. Sometimes I win!

  3. I have very thick, CURLY hair . . . I always air dry it (except sometimes in the midst of winter). I had a pewter barrette my husband brought me from Scotland which I LOVED . . . but my thick hair eventually loosened the clasp too much.

Good for you for running in a sports bra! Just tell em it's a bikini top. ;)

    1. I think we all want the hair we weren't born with. Curly would be awesome! I decided to stop working with my hair so much about 7 years ago. It took entirely too much time.

  4. I think your pewter hair thing is exotic and fab! I don't go beyond an elastic ponytail holder. I cannot stand Walmart. But I go every spring because their annuals are cheap. Thanks for linking up!

    1. The plants at our Walmart stores don't look good. They need a better supplier. Or maybe someone should water them. I usually go to Home Depot.

  5. I've been braiding my hair while it's wet so I don't have to use a dryer too! I also understand your hate for Walmart and I feel the same way. I get some type of anxiety from being in there!

    1. Mine is not quite long enough and I never mastered french braiding anyway. I've never thought they had the best prices. They just want you to think they do.

  6. I have totally given up on blowdrying my hair lately. I let it air dry while I drive to work and then just put it up once its sort of dry.
I have never run in just a sports bra, but I think the beach is a good place to do it. I'm not opposed to it, I just don't want to feel self-conscious during my entire run.

    1. I could never wear just a bra around here for races. I would be way too self conscious. I see some people that look good in them but others...not so good.

  7. My hair is a mess in the summer - frizzy. I just let it dry. Always wear a cap when I run, play tennis or go boating.

I have never run in just a sports bra but on a beach would be the place - unfortunately, I am very tan except my stomach so it would look weird.

    1. I usually wear a hat in the boat or pool, but I don't run in one -- unless it's raining. You can always put self tanner on your tummy. Then you'll be ready for the next beach trip.

  8. haha. I had to laugh - I pull a cart from the front so my tracker arm can hang & swing :)

  9. I rarely blow dry my hair. I've always showered at night and unless it's pretty cold out, I'll let it air dry before I go to bed. Then I normally just have it in a ponytail during the day.

    1. I shower after my early morning run. Then I'm left with a wet mop of hair and need to do something with it so I can go to work.

  10. I loath Walmart. LOL!! And my hair is nearly ALWAYS in a pony tail.

    1. So many of us dislike Walmart, but there seems to be that "something" that we must go there to get. I'm glad I've got so many fellow pony tail wearers!

    1. And counting... I'm just in a bit of a racing slump right now. Too hot.

  12. Jealous! My hair is so thin I have the wrap a band around my tiny ponytail a lot of times. OK, I thought I discovered a cool item this week in the Almond Coconut Milk BUT now you say (and show) that there's Almond Coconut Butter now?!! MUST HAVE THIS!
What a difference 10 years can make right?! From NO running to OBSESSED!

    1. It's funny we always want the hair we didn't get. I'd love thin, sleek, flowing hair. My husband jokes you can floss your teeth with mine. Ha ha. I'm an all or nothing kind of person so OBSESSED it is.

  13. My face stays red a long time after my run. I ought to wait until I get to work to do my makeup, but I don't like carrying stuff around. My purse is practically empty. It would save me some time, though! How dare your coworker say that!

  14. My problem with Walmart is only that when I push one of their shopping carts through their bumpy parking lot, my Fitbit thinks I tapped it and goes into sleep mode and I don't know that I walked 2000 steps!

    ReplyDelete

    1. Ha! That would be awful. Why are the parking lots so bad?

  15. I went to a Walmart for the first time when I was 26 (they weren't any around me... just Targets growing up). Love that you counted the steps while there :)

    1. I prefer Target. Our store isn't as massive and it's easier to get around in and check out.

  16. I would be right there rolling on the floor laughing with you, if you had told me 10 years that I would love running. I never have a hair style. Since I work in a kitchen, it's just pulled back all of the time and the same for when I run. I used to flat iron my hair every morning and still make an effort, but since having my daughter I have used my flat iron twice. I guess it's an annual occurrence now and I'm okay with that but I'm sure my hairdresser would be mortified as well. :)

    1. Hair styling seems to take so much time! I've never owned a flat iron! Years and years ago, it was all about hot rollers. HA. Things change.

  17. I hate Walmart also but do my hair everyday and go to the hair dresser every 6 weeks. I also wear makeup everyday, and even when I run I usually put on mascara. It makes me feel feminine !

    1. I wear foundation all the time because it has SPF protection and doesn't run in my eyes like sunscreen when I sweat.

  18. Good for you for running in just a bra and shorts! That's how I feel these days--it's too hot to worry about how I look, so if I want to wear as little clothes as possible, I'm going to! I have not yet run in just a bra, but if it gets hot enough I would. I'm also not a Walmart fan, though there really isn't one near me so I haven't experienced it much.

    1. I try to see how long I can go without going to Walmart. I think I've made it a whole year before. LOL.

  19. I have really long hair, and lately it's been super hot so I have wanted it UP. I am going to make you feel a lot better because I have been wearing the same clip almost every day too, because it's just perfect to throw all my hair up on top of my head in a messy bun, LOL

    1. I feel much better now. I know the gals at work get tired of looking at it. But, hey - it works.

  20. I've never run in just a sports bra, but I've been tempted many times! Love that barrette, really pretty! Oh, and that almond butter looks amazing! I'm too cheap to buy the stuff, lol.

    1. I wonder why almond butter is so expensive? I try to make the jar last as long as I can!

  21. I have run in just a sports bra when I think I am all alone in the back of the ranch where no one will see me. I think I would get over it at a beach too. My super long hair is killing me right now.. feels like it is all knots and tangles, I am trying to keep it braided when I run, but sometimes am too lazy :)

    1. I'm almost ready to run around my neighborhood in one. It's so hot at this point, I don't think I would care! However, I wouldn't have my shirt to wipe my face on! LOL.

  22. I missed this somehow! So is swinging your arm while pushing a grocery cart the key to having those steps count? My Garmin doesn't count them either but I think my Jawbone UP did.

    1. Yes, your arm has got to swing to get steps. Pushing a grocery cart is really the only thing I've found that Fitbit doesn't pick up.
