Coffee Talk (July Edition)

Happy 4th of July!

It's a holiday weekend.  Let's settle in, have coffee and chat for a while!

Over Coffee...

I'd relate how I recently went through the drive thru at my regular Starbucks, actually it was my reward for surviving Walmart.  Anyhoo, they got my order wrong.  I have a painfully long, drawn out conversation with window-lady regarding said wrong order.  She admits she recognizes me, should have known what I wanted, remembers my cute credit card (scary!), yada yada and even more yada yada.

While I'm waiting for them to re-make my iced coffee, I glance in the rear view mirror to see how many cars I'm holding up in the line.  And...you know, I might as well check my appearance.  *** EEK! ***  A piece of spaghetti is stuck on my lip (aka -- lunch revisited).  Now I need a new Starbucks!  {Here comes the old lady with the noodle on her lip!}  I probably fit right in at Walmart.

Over Coffee...

I'd tell you how I found a pair of Feetures running socks at an outdoor shop for only $3.  Never mind that they are a size smaller than I would typically buy.   Heck, for $3 I'll scrunch up my feet!  Actually, I stretched them out while they were wet and they feel fine.  My running socks never grace the inside of a clothes dryer.  No, no, no.

Speaking of running, you'd hear how I've had a few really good and strong runs this week.  Note I did not say fast.  But, I returned to the house energized as opposed to completely zapped from heat and humidity.  Maybe there is hope after all.  I can DO this marathon thing!   (Do you hear that, stupid hip?  Huh?)

Over Coffee...

I'd tell you we typically enjoy the 4th of July holiday at the lake or in the pool, maybe eat BBQ and shoot fireworks -- but keep the day pretty low key.  This holiday is a little sentimental for me.  I always think about My Dad (see recent post) who passed away on this date 25 years ago.  While my Mother was still alive, we would meet her at the beach for this holiday.  Our small children were always an excellent distraction for her on this day.

What would you tell me over coffee?

Do you have special plans for the weekend?

  1. LOL on the noodle! You did fit right in at Walmart!
I would tell you how my family used to do big gatherings all the time and get together, but now we hardly ever do and it makes me a little sad. Not sure why the change except maybe all my cousins have grown up and moved away and are busy with families of their own now.
I would tell you how it is fire season and that always makes me feel like a kid again and takes me back to the year it seemed the whole world was going to burn up (I was 6 and 35 percent of the ranch burned, got within 100 yards of the house, my great grandmas house and the barns. )
I would tell you I am doing a Ragnar Relay in Washington in two weeks!!

    1. It's just hard to get together like we used to. We are too spread out. It does makes me a little sad because I have such good memories. But, I figure it's time for me to make new memories for my own children and DIL and grandkids. Fire season sounds scary. Ragnar sounds like so much fun!!

  2. good morning!!!! Your Starbucks story about made my choke on my coffee, how funny are you! I got out and played golf with the hubby yesterday for the first time this year, I was happy, happy! I think we will head to Epcot later today for food, fun and fireworks! Enjoy the day! I am ready for a new FitBit challenge! :)

    1. The kids and I were just discussing Epcot last night. The music that plays around the fountain, the constant breeze through that area. The food. Ahhh... I can't say NO to a Fitbit challenge. It's a sickness. I hope you will be able to sync your steps this week.

    1. That stuff happens to me all the time...I just have to laugh at it. My hip seems to be improving. Enjoy your holiday!

  4. Your noodle story reminded me of the time my husband and I were first house shopping, way back when we first got married. Somehow we got this crazy realtor, who reminded me of my farm grandma...anyways, one time she met us and she had spaghetti sauce on her shirt and on her glasses. She was telling us how she enjoyed her dinner and it took every ounce of self control I had not to tell that I noticed it....

    1. Now that is funny. She couldn't tell she had sauce on her glasses? Stuff like this happens to me all the time...I have to just laugh at myself.

  5. $3 socks would be worth a lot of stretching out. :) And I love that you recognize that the noodle would be totally WalMart appropriate! I hope you have the low key holiday you're looking for!

  6. Hahhaha! Old noodle lady...

SCORE on the socks! Mine never go in the dryer either. None of my running clothes do.

I found this yesterday. I'll be doing it regularly! Some of these stretches felt soooooo gooooood to the hip/quad/glute area that's been giving me a fit. This video is level 1 but there's a level 2 and 3 also. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nBmwPjZ_B3w&list=PL0NAqki5qTNG3BIq4cJc83DEDpQX2ghPB

    1. Thanks for the link! I'm going to try. I didn't run or walk or anything for 4 days recently and my hip did not improve at all. It actually felt better when I went back to my normal routine. So, I'm just doing my thing and continuing to stretch and foam roll. It feels better than it did, so I'm encouraged.

  8. Oh the Starbucks story is funny. The other day a lady working at a store had some of her lunch stuck in her teeth and I didn't have the heart to tell her. What is the protocol on that anyway?????

  9. Ooh $3 Feetures...I would have done the same thing! I love their socks but don't want to pay for them. I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

    1. I'm going to go back to that store to see if they still have them!

  10. Funny, but my regular running socks (not my compression socks) and my tank tops are the only running items that do go in the dryer. I just don't have enough drying space for all the fitness clothes I wear each week.

    1. Thankfully, I have a long room-length rod above my washer and dryer to hang things on. In fact, most of our clothes just live there and never make it back upstairs to the closet.

  11. That's got to be tough, losing a loved one on a holiday. I did have one uncle die on my birthday, which is actually a holiday, but it's not the same, I know. Gotta make it tough for my mom.

I'd buy the wrong size running socks for $3 too! Score!

Aside from my race, all in did yesterday was watch Independence Day & another forgettable movie with my husband. It rained for most of my day (but not my race).

And thought about my grandfather, gone many yrs - but born on the 4th of July. My only grandparent born in this country. I thought about him as I raced, too, as he lost part of a leg to diabetes/cancer late in his life.

    1. We've had a stormy 3 day weekend. One day was pretty decent until late afternoon. At least you were able to race. The first few years were tough on this holiday. As time passes, it gets easier. I thought about my Dad quite a bit yesterday, but they were happy memories.

  12. haha I love that Starbucks is your reward for surviving Walmart, I feel like I need one too anytime I go there, I should do that next time :) The last time I went there, I had just ran and was so close to not taking a shower because why, I would fit right in anyway! And Feetures for $3 is an amazing deal! I hope you and your family had a nice 4th reflecting on the memories of your mom and dad :)

    1. I wouldn't worry about showering before going to Walmart. LOL. I hope that store still has those $3 socks. I should have bought more but was afraid they would be too small.

  13. I'm certainly not accomplishing much around my house! There's just not enough time to do everything and I get overwhelmed. I've finally come to terms with the humidity, I think, but it took a while. Are your legs aching or is it a general overall thing?

  14. Have you thought about taking salt tablets? I definitely use them for longer runs because of the excessive sweating. It might help with that "drained" feeling.

  15. That's so funny. I found some Feetures at Marshalls a while back and they were size S but I bought them anyway becuase of the price.

Love your waterskiing pics - I miss it.

    1. I wish I had bought more than 1 pair but I thought they might not fit. Waterskiing is very tough on the body. I'm not sure how many years I have left.
