Weekly Wrap #3

This is a new weekly linkup hosted by yours truly and my good friend Tricia @ MissSippiPiddlin.  The purpose of this link is to connect with and support other active women.  We want to hear about your weekly adventures.  You are encouraged to include anything you did to be active or anything you considered fun.  We want to know how you amazing women accomplish it all.  You can summarize your whole week or just a small portion of it.  It's up to you!  See rules here.

On to the weekly wrap...

Monday was the typical rest day.  However, I did walk my dogs for an hour in the evening.  They were thrilled as I've been slacking in this area.  Tuesday's easy 5 miler was the first run of my week.  I'm very disappointed the weather provided no relief all week as Mr. Dew Point hovered at his highest levels.  This was the swampiest week yet.  {Do I say that every week?}

Tuesday night brought heavy thunderstorms and high winds.  I headed out at an extremely dark 5:15 Wednesday morning for an 8 mile medium paced run.  I tripped over the limbs that had fallen in our yard but didn't think anymore about it after reaching the street.  I turned the first corner of my regular route and **wham** ran right through a big limb than had fallen.  Luckily I connected with the twiggy end as opposed to the trunk, otherwise I would have face planted in the street.  It was in a darker section and I was still in my sleepy 1st mile.  {I'm awake now!}  This run ended up being like an obstacle course. 


Thursday was a complete rest day and Friday brought another 5 mile easy effort run.  The conditions were extra swampy.  See the fog?  I also worked Friday evening on my landscaping, which has been sorely neglected of late.  It's great exercise but also required a cooling dip in the pool.  Friday was just an incredibly steamy day.





Saturday was my official cross training day, which means...water skiing!  Whoot!  It was a beautiful day at the lake.  I made 4 ski runs and finally remembered to take my GoPro.  I attached it to my vest.  If you have a little time, look at this clip.  This is what I see when I ski.  I provided a little narration as well.  Warning: southern drawl ahead!  Ha Ha.  (I apologize for the extra minutes of blackness.  GoPro Studios is tricky to use.)  We ate at our favorite oyster bar on the way home.  A fantastic day!




On the training plan I really don't follow, there were 18 miles scheduled for Sunday's long run.  I ran 19 instead, just because.  Mr. Dew Point was still acting out but once the sun came up, the air stirred and provided the tiniest bit of relief.   My old body held up admirably:  no pain, no cramps, no chafing, etc.  However, I felt nauseous after returning home.  Could it have been from the Oysters Rockefeller and two extra Margaritas?  Probably.  I admit, I was a slug for the remainder of the day.

In review, I ran a total of 37 miles.  My long run definitely felt better compared to last week.  Tricia and I often joke that we go to work on Mondays to get some much needed rest.  That is definitely the sentiment right now.  I fully intend to enjoy my scheduled cut-back week!

  1. Water skiing looks fun! I'd be afraid of wiping out and hitting the water hard. Congrats on your 19 miles. Always nice to get more in than what you plan on.

    1. It's funny how hard water can feel! I usually don't wipe out unless there is some type of equipment malfunction. I've had the rope become unattached, etc. I usually come up dying with laughter because it's such a surprise.

  2. I don't know how you do it with all the heat & humidity. Enjoy your water skiing while the summer lasts, I love being on a lake, though preferably in a boat rather than behind it ! Have a great week and thanks for the link up.

    1. Honestly, I don't either. I guess you just do what you have to. Water skiing is the ONE good thing about the heat & humidity. I'll be sad to have to let it go but so glad to run in cooler air.

  3. Water skiing sounds like fun! I did that once back in high school and love being on the lake.
    I'm so glad that your long run went well. I was very sluggish for the rest of the day after mine too. Those long runs will really tire you out.

    1. Yeah, the long runs really do wipe you out. Especially when you can't help but get dehydrated in this heat. I feel like I recovered quickly. I'm always pleased about that.

  6. Great ski clip! My hubby will agree that it is the best cross training activity, I just can't get in to it. I am signed up for the blog hop- they are always fun!     1. I think water skiing is one of those things you are not likely to try as an adult. My mother had to bribe me with a trip to Six Flags when I was 10. I've been hooked every since. I hope you got good news at the doc!

  7. You must have great arms & abs from that waterskiing - although 90 degree water doesn't sound great to me. Whatever floats your boat, as they say.

    I seriously can't imagine running 19 just because. I'm usually like I'm walking the minute I hit whatever mileage the plan calls for !

    1. My shoulder and back muscles are a little freaky, I must say. My abs, not so much. I'm a little nutty about trying to do one more mile! I want to hit 20 or above for my next two (and only two remaining) long runs.

  8. Very fun to waterski with you! It doesn't look like I get to go this year. We haven't been out of town to the lake at all. We just don't want to leave the boys home alone--I wonder why? This will be the first year I haven't skiied since Tom was born! He's 18! Sniff...

    1. Oh, I get that! We are lucky to have this lake so close by, just a few miles north. You can ski 20 miles before turning around too. We'll being skiing into our 90s, so there are plenty of years left. I probably only have a few trips left before the weathers turns. Sniff!

  9. I take Mondays as a rest day too. Mondays and Fridays so I'm busy the rest of the week and on the weekends. Glad you didn't get hurt tripping over the limbs.

    1. As an "older" runner, those rest days are very important to me! That big limb really scared me. I don't think I realized how dark the mornings have become either.

H, I'm so thankful that we've finally gotten a little relief around here; other than the rain and lightning on Saturday, it was definitely much more pleasant than it has been on previous long runs - ha! I wish I could send some your way; hoping you'll get some relief soon. I love your water skiing video; that is AWESOME!! Sounds like you had a wonderful week of training!!     1. It looks like we will have a better week here too. It's just my luck this is a cut back week! LOL. I'm going to try to work on my speed a little on those cooler mornings. I can't do much with it in the humidity.

  12. 19 miles instead of 18 that's very cool. I only run extra if I make a mistake or get lost. I'm training for Ironman Augusta 70.3 in about a month and then Ironman Florida in November.

    1. I'm always of the mindset, let me see if I can do one more. It may not be the smartest thing. I'm so in awe of your Ironman racing. I think you would have to be made of steel. I look forward to following along.

    1. Thanks. I only have two long runs left. It's getting close now. My husband gave me that GoPro a couple of years ago and I kept forgetting to try it out. It takes very good photos too.

  14. I have never tried water skiing -- I hear it is a fantastic leg workout! What a paradise to be able to get out on that beautiful lake!

    1. If you ski on two skis, you get a better leg workout. If you slalom like me, it's more about the upper body. I'm all about activity to do with water. It makes me happy.

  15. Great week despite the swampy conditions. That 19 had to be a huge confidence builder. Seriously if you can rock 19 now, there's no stopping you on race day. Maybe now that I can sort of swim, I'll give water skiing a shot...

    1. I hope so! The great thing is you don't need to be a good swimmer. Your ski vest will always keep you afloat. Most people can't get over getting in the lake water. It is dark & murky.

  16. Yes Ma'am it is Monday and we are resting from the weekend's activities! lol! Hey we wouldn't have it any other way though huh! I loved the video from your GoPro! I so need to check into one of these. I think it would be awesome to have one in Disney on the rides and all! How cool would that be!!!! Only 47 more days for you and your training well I'm just in awe of how well you've done in this weather! I know you are excited and I am too for you my friend! Have a great Monday!

    1. My GoPro is an earlier model. It has no view finder. In other words, you can't see what you are filming which is slightly irritating. I guess this is because the original premise was to attach it to your body, bike, surfboard, etc. and you wouldn't need one. I think they've added one to the newer models. Don't be freaking me out with the countdown! I'm trying not to think about it. LOL.

  18. Good job on all of the mileage! I admit I was happy my long run today was "just" 15. Once my kids go back to school, week days will be a lot easier for me.

  19. Water skiing always looks so fun, but I'm too afraid of water sports for some reason. Last time I went tubing, I had a bruise on my bottom for weeks!!! Glad you had a great time and nice job on your mileage!

    1. My kids like to tube and I'll occasionally take a ride. That thing is much scarier than skiing to me, even though you are going slower.

Well, if Mother Nature is at all equitable, weather on your race day is sure to be perfect given all the nasty, humid conditions you're training in! We actually got a reprieve here the past few days, which felt wonderful.

    Way to go on running 19 when you had 18 on the schedule! You better believe that I never ran a single step more than my prescribed mileage when I was marathon training, LOL. It sounds like you're killing your mileage buildup!

    1. Thanks. The water was so pretty as we were getting ready to leave. I'm one of those who tries to just get one more mile... I have 2 more super long runs left. That's all!

  25. It sounds crazy, but I don't use any light on my dark morning runs. I feel I know the streets (even the sewers caps) and the street lights provide enough light...usually. This limb just happened to be in one of the few dark spots. Or maybe my eyes were still closed. LOL.
