I runfess...
I took out my magic wand and {swoosh} granted myself an extra rest day after my last long marathon training run. I felt really guilty about it for a good 5 or 10 minutes.
I was overly worried I had played with fire by running over 20 miles not once, but twice, in this training cycle. I am a {cough-sputter} older runner, you know.
I runfess...
This has been happening for the last few weeks...or month...or maybe longer...

I left my good designated-for-the-marathon shoes outside in the weather instead of on the porch. Uh-huh, it stormed. They were soaked. And now there is a unpleasant sour smell on top of the usual summertime sweat stink.
It reminds me of the time I wore my running shoes home on a flight after a half marathon. I never walk in them -- too stiff. But, they smelled so bad I just couldn't put them in my carry-on and stink up the entire plane. I thought I could mask the smell if they were on my feet. Nope. I smelled them all the way home, along with everyone else.

I'm already stalking the Chicago weather. Did you know The Weather Channel now does a 15 day forecast online? Yes, I realize it will change 327 times between now and race day, but it gives me hope. I see nothing close to what I've had to endure all summer. Yippee! I'm not sure why I'm bothering because I have no clue what I'll wear! I've run in the same ratty, baggy shorts since March (not the same pair, I have 4 colors). I swear if they had a pocket, I'd be sporting them in the marathon. Alas, I'll try to scrounge around for something cute.

Do you have anything you need to Runfess?
I'm linking up with Marcia today from Marcia's Healthy Slice.

I haven't been stalking the weather yet. It changes so much! I hope it stays cooler. It's been a really pleasant couple of weeks!
ReplyDeleteI know they can even get today's prediction correct, so I'm not sure why I bother. Just something to do and fret over.
DeleteI left the dog leashes outside in a terrible storm and they have that same horrendous stench! You know I'm stalking Twin Cities....looks a little warmer than I'd like...
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for linking up!
Maybe it won't be too warm for your race. It's something we can't do anything about, so I'm not sure why we spend so much time looking at the weather.
DeleteI'm terrible about obsessing over the weather pre-race, which is crazy since I can't do a thing about it - yet I obsess just the same.
ReplyDeleteI just said the same thing above. LOL. I worry about everything pre-race but once I get there, I'm usually calm and accepting of whatever race day brings.
DeleteThe weather is going to be amazing for yall! I know this cause I have seen into my crystal ball.... that and I have my fingers crossed too. ;) Taper time baby! Enjoy and the real deal is soooo close eeeek I'm so excited for you!
ReplyDeleteWell thank goodness you have a crystal ball. My wand doesn't work on the weather. I'm excited too (and a little nervous until I get there).
DeleteIt cracks me up they have forecasts so far in advance when they can never get the next day right.
ReplyDeleteThey can't get the same day correct. It'll start pouring rain and storming so I'll check the weather. It'll say something stupid like 10% chance. You might want to update your forecast people.
DeleteI try not to look at the weather but it's hard to resist! I hope it's great!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Coco. I hope it is perfect, but I'll accept whatever race day brings. I have no choice.
DeleteYes, think cool vibes. Surely it would never be as warm as what I've run in all summer! It makes me a little nervous with this race because I'll be out in the weather so much longer than with other distances. Yikes. I'll probably go with an old tried and true outfit. Nothing new.
ReplyDeleteThat is funny about your shoes!!!. I am so paranoid about smelling, I would have thrown them out...but you are very brave. I runfess that I stalk previous race results and compare them to the registrants to see if I have a chance. Have a great evening

I couldn't get rid of "good" running shoes just because they smell. They are too hard to come by. LOL. I always look at previous results of local races. I've been known to decide between the 5k or 10k depending on the participants already signed up...trying to pick the one with the better odds. It usually never works the way I plan!
DeleteI've yet to do a Runfessions but should have done it this week! I kind of sort of hurt my leg and don't want to admit it so I've barely run this week but run just enough to keep it hurting :( I decided to take my energy out on the punching bag and now I have bloody gross looking knuckles! I would have hated to sit next to you on that plane! That really is my only plane pet peeve...smells... of any kind - lol. Have a great weekend!!
ReplyDeleteI've got this little niggle on top of my left foot which I'm trying to ignore so I completely understand. I hated to sit with myself on the plane! Ha. I sat next to a woman once that smelled strongly of urine. Ugh.
DeleteI am such a weather stalker so I fully understand your behavior !
ReplyDeleteThe forecast is usually so wrong anyway too! But I can't help myself.
DeleteAlways so frigging hard to figure out what to wear in a cool fall marathon after months of hot summer weather.
ReplyDeleteI really, really, really hope I can wear my running skirt . . . so friggin' comfy. And I think that pink top will work well on a cool day, but who really knows because I've only run 4 miles in it? Maybe I'll wear it for next week's long run but that's still only 6 miles I think.
I don't think there's anything wrong with extra rest in your taper. I'm going back to only 3 x week I think for the next couple of weeks. Aside from a slightly tender Achilles, I'm feeling pretty good for a change & I want to keep it that way.
The Achilles can be taped like the knee even though I haven't been taping it.
You could always wear your skirt and add socks if you need to. I'll probably fall back on one of my older tried and true running skirts. If it is really cool, I'll wear my trusty black capris. I've been through the Achilles thing. Not fun.
DeleteHuge weather stalker here and already I am seeing forecasts for the NYC Marathon which is over a month away. Choosing a race day outfit can be challenging but I was thinking about my outfit today when I was out running errands. Fingers crossed we both get great marathon weather!
ReplyDeleteMy fingers are already crossed for good weather and lots of other things on race day too! I hope my body holds up, mainly.
DeleteMy hubby is a huge weather stalker, me not so much. I pretty much believe the weather man can't get it right if you lite their a$$ on fire but I do like to know the average temp :) Now you know you need to pick out something cute, it just makes you faster!!!! :) Happy Sunday!
ReplyDeleteYou are so right about that, but I stalk it anyway. LOL. Truly all you need to know are temperature, humidity level and radar information.
DeleteI runfess, I should have retired a couple of my running shoes awhile ago, but I really love them so I still wear them for shorter runs. I stalk the weather for a race as soon as I can and multiple times a day. Can't help it.
ReplyDeleteI've got a favorite pair of melon (aka orange) running shoes that I still love to wear. My big runfession is I still have all of the shoes. I can't give away a memory!
