Changing Lanes (WW # 12)

Welcome to the Weekly Wrap!

This weekly linkup is hosted by yours truly and my good friend Tricia @ MissSippiPiddlin.  The purpose is to connect with and support other active women.  We want to hear about your weekly adventures.  You are encouraged to include anything you did to be active or anything you considered fun.  Please tell us how you amazing women accomplish it all.  You can summarize your whole week or just a small portion of it.  It's up to you!  See rules here.    Rule Change:  You can now link beginning at 6 pm (CT) on Sunday evenings!

On Monday and Tuesday I did absolutely nothing active.  Nada.  Zip.  Zilch.  Sometimes, you just gotta!  Plus, it was just too dang cold for early morning biking.

Wednesday, off to the gym I limped.  Thank goodness for heated pools.  It was 5:18 a.m. when I jumped in and ran for 80 minutes.  Thanks again to Karen from Running Over The Hill for sending me her pool watch and HR monitor.  I was very touched by this.  I'm deeming it The Sisterhood Of The Traveling HR Monitor.

This LANE makes a pretty picture.

It was a huge help to watch my HR and not let it slip below a certain level.  It averaged 130 and peaked at 141.  "Experts" say because of water resistance, and other scientific blah blah blah technicalities, it is impossible to achieve your normal running HR.  It will likely average 15 points lower.  Good to know!

Thursday, I biked for 14 dark early miles.  My lungs were so sore from the previous day's pool running (or possibly from inhalation of chlorine fumes?).  My upper quads were sore as well.  Hmm....that pool running is something else!  I was absolutely dragging by the end of the day.  {Just point me to the bed!}

I find the awkward curve in the middle of this LANE to be very symbolic!

Saturday was another bike day.  I slept in and it was very warm when I finally got my rear in gear.  Is it August again?  I rode 21.5 miles and my average heart rate was 155.  I know I've talked a lot about HR, but it's the only way to know I'm getting a quality workout.   Saturday afternoon we had a house full of people glued to a nail biter of a football game.  Whew!  Roll Tide.

Sunday I originally planned to return to the pool.  However, when I checked the upcoming week's weather, I saw it may be rainy for several days.  Knowing I would not ride in the rain, I opted for the bike again and saved the pool for a rainy day.  I logged another 32.5 miles at a slightly lower intensity than the day before.

I finally found a tree changing color!

For Sunday's supper, I tried a quiche recipe from Karen at French Inspiration.  I added 1 cup of diced ham (got to feed a house full of men!) and served it with steamed broccoli, chick peas and red grapes.  This recipe is very easy and definitely a keeper.  A funny: I once worked with a lady who pronounced it "key-shee".

In summary, I rode my bike 3 times for a total of 69 miles and pool ran once for 80 minutes.  Being honest, I was exhausted all week.  Sometimes I feel I'm working harder than I did during marathon trainingAnd I'll go ahead and admit beyond irritable most days too.  Patience is not my strong suit and I'm ready for this foot injury to be over.

And that's a wrap.

Do you like quiche?

Do you ever feel like you are overdoing it?

  1. You have been killing your pool runs and biking. I do think you've done more than you would marathon training. Ha! See it's good to change things up, our bodies get use to the same ol same ol. I know it's just got to work it's course, but you'll be over it soon and look back and see how you didn't take it laying down! No sista you got this! That was so sweet of Karen to let you use her HR monitor! Can you see the monitor while you run or do you have to wait til the workout is over? Yea it's raining here as I type, but we did need the rain. It's so dang dry here. Been under a burn band for months and I hope it will be lifted soon. I have a ton of feed bags to burn! Hope you have a great week!

    1. Thank you Tricia. You seem to always know what to say. The watch Karen sent me displays my HR at all times. It doesn't track any type of distance. Just time and HR. I just have to glance at my wrist. If I see it slipping down, I increase the intensity. For example, I may "sprint" until I get to the end of the pool. I'm being challenged, but I'm all in! Go big or go home, right?

  2. I love quiche... the hubs, not so much. I wish I had it more.
The leaves are in full force here - I'm loving it

    1. Surprisingly, my husband likes quiche. I'm sure he'd prefer it spicy with tons of peppers and onions, though. Nancy's Quiche is good from the frozen section of the grocery store, just don't look at the fat grams. I'm so jealous of everyone's fall colors. It doesn't really peak here until Thanksgiving week. I'm waiting...

  3. I think I'm the only runner on earth who doesn't do HR training. I've tried it but I didn't like it. I just train by feel--on the bike too! I need to try pool running. Sounds like a great workout!

And I have a yummy quiche recipe with summer squash and zucchini, if you are interested!

    1. With running, I didn't do much with HR info either. I have so many months of hot running, it elevates the HR anyway. But doing both of these activities that are mostly unfamiliar to me, it's important for me to know I have got my HR up there. I need these workouts to really count! Pool running seriously whips my butt. I love squash and zucchini, so yes I'd very much like your recipe!

  4. I've heard pool running is a great workout but have never tried it. It's good that you have a pool close to you that you can use. And you're really doing the bike rides up right! That's a lot of miles, especially just over the weekend. You're making me want to take a spinning class, which I always thought were great workouts (I'm too scared to ride on the roads).

    1. If it was summer, I'd be pool running 15 feet from my kitchen door. I knew we should have put a heater in our pool! But, at least I can get to the gym within 5 minutes. I couldn't bike on busy roads. It's all about finding somewhere you are comfortable. For longer rides, I'm currently cutting through the woods to the next neighborhood. It's much, much bigger than ours but still very quiet with wonderfully wide avenues.

  5. I do like quiche, and the pronunciations crack me up. I remember watching something (SNL?) where they were making fun of George Bush Jr. and having him pronouncing it "quickie" as if he were asking the waitress for something adult-oriented instead of food. Nice cycling mileage! Are you on Strava? That gets to be addictive with tracking your personal records on segments of rides (and also competing for QOMs). Hang in there on the recover. It sounds like you are continuing to work your energy systems and some different muscles - you'll be back stronger than ever!

    1. That is hilarious! I'm going to have to find that on You Tube. I'm not on Strava but I'll check into that. I really enjoyed my 32.5 ride today. I would have gone further but was getting hungry and wasn't prepared to keep going. Stupid me. The Trek is really feeling good now. I'm getting her speed up a little too.

  6. Great cycling! And good for you for trying pool running! I think anytime you try something new it is exhausting. LOL at kee-shee!

    1. It's definitely a challenge for me. One I will continue to hard work at. I never had the heart to correct her pronunciation. But now, I want to always say it like that too.

  7. You're doing great on your bike! I wish I was more comfy with riding. 80 mins of pool running! That's incredible! I do like quiche. There was a place here in town called Incredible Edibles that served the best quiche. I think they've moved to Montgomery now. I don't know if they still do dine in since they're mostly catering. That was a nail biter towards the end. Thank goodness for that fumble! Roll Tide!

    1. Thanks Debra. I am feeling much more comfy with my new bike. It took a few weeks to get the feel of it. I'll have to check into Incredible Edibles. It sounds familiar. Yeah, Bama squeaked by with that one.

  8. Hi Holly, I find I am drained after the pool. I never used to like it because I didn't sweat but it i really is a great workout.
Did you like the recipe ? How did it turn out? Any difficulties with it ? You can also add tuna, or ground meat... pretty much anything as long as it is cooked before. Watery veggies like tomatoes and zucchini don't work well.
    Have a great week !

    1. Karen, the quiche was delicious and easy. I like recipes with just a few ingredients and that one fit the bill. I've decided the pool workouts are deceiving because you can't tell how hard you are working, or sweating. But they do the job!

  9. Way to go on the bike and pool running! Sounds like you're getting a great workout pool running! That's seems like a lot of biking miles too! I like quiche! It's been a while since I've had it, sounds good!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I like Nancy's quiche from the frozen food aisle too! But, Karen's recipe seemed very easy so I gave it a try. It's not difficult to get a lot of miles on a bike. It goes by so fast. I read somewhere the ratio for running to biking is 1 to 3.5. That means to get the effect of a 10 mile run, I'd have to bike 35 miles. Yikes.

  10. Great job getting in those workouts! Pool running is no joke. I felt like it made my muscles sore but I never felt like I was getting in the same cardio workout as actually running, so I alternated between pool running and swimming. Thanks for hosting the link-up!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. You know, I didn't think the cardio was where it needed to be at first. But now with the HR info, I realize it's just where it should be. That also helps me crank it up it up too. Plus, I'm so whipped from it I know it's a quality workout.

  11. Sounds like you are working had to me! That pool running sounds cool! I think we need a video demo so we can see this in action! :) Can you believe I had NO football this weekend? The Gators and the Packers both had an off week! Happy Monday :)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Rest assured, there will be no video demo of pool running. I feel so dorky doing it! But, you gotta do what you gotta do. Both of you teams were off? How'd that happen? Next time they should consult with you first.

  12. Great job keeping up the cardio. Pool running is exhausting, and I understand being so tired the next day. Indeed, point me to bed, I'm done.

    1. Thanks. Cardio is really all I can work on right now. It's oddly deceptive because while you are doing it, you think "meh". Then the next day, wham!

  13. I know one lady from my group that did a lot of pool running last year, but she did it with friends -- got any injured friends nearby? Or anyone who would run with you?

Sometimes just everything seems hard & unfair. But everything always passes.

    1. I have no injured friends. I'm pretty sure no one likes me enough to get up that early either! LOL. I wish I wasn't so irritable. I'm not sleeping well and it is really affecting me.

  14. Aha! I finally figured something out too. I haven't commented as much because it wasn't publishing my comments. Just so you know I've written a bunch that never got published & I've been reading!

I better not get hurt - I don't swim (don't even have access to a pool) and hate to bike.

  17. You are a total star with the way you've embraced what you CAN do! That said, are you fueling properly during those long pool sessions? It's easy to forget to drink being in water and all and GU rules apply too.

    1. Well, no I'm not. Because in the pool, I don't feel hot, sweaty or thirsty. There are no triggers. Thanks for that reminder. I'm also used to taking salt caps when I run. Duh.

  18. Awesome job with your bike and pool running workouts! Pool running sounds so exhausting to me. 80 minutes of running on the pool is amazing! I like quiche a lot but actually haven't had it in a while. I will have to make it again!

    1. It is exhausting, but you can't tell until the next day. When I say 80 minutes, I mean 80 minutes of nonstop movement. Gosh, I hope it pays of in the end! Karen's quiche recipe is very easy. Try it.

  24. You have been amazingly consistent in your training despite your injury! Between both the amount of work you're doing and the fact that you don't get that "feel good" high in the same way you would if you were doing the activity you really WANTED to do, I can definitely see where it feels harder.

  27. I had a pretty sedentary week too but yesterday, I made a change! I had to! I spent an hour spinning but outdoor biking sounds fun. I need to try to get a few miles in before the weather gets too cold.

    1. I'm not so good with spinning, I must admit. I'm definitely solar powered. Thankfully, our winter is short and very tolerable.

  28. Wow! sounds like you have been doing alot. At least you are staying active doing other things than running. And your not using your injury as an excuse for not working out. That quiche sounds tastier than one of the ones I just read that was vegan. How does that work? I guess don't knock it til you try it.

    ReplyDelete

    1. That's a good question. I thought vegans didn't eat eggs. But, I'm definitely not an expert on that. Maybe that recipe had no eggs? Then how was it a quiche? Confusing.

  29. I love quiche - once in a while!

I think you deserve bonus points for all you're doing as your foot heals. I've never been able to bring myself to try pool running. So great for staying fit during recovery, though.

    Thanks for the linkup!

  30. While you may be frustrated by not running, believe me that the cross training of pool work and bike riding will keep you in shape. I had no trouble after my month off from running this summer. It stinks to be away from something you love, and being irritable is understandable...I was certainly that way this summer and my hubby will vouch for that. Being tired is part of any training cycle and it happens to all of us!

  31. Great week of being active. I'm not really a fan of quiche. I used to like it and then after my pregnancies I haven't been able to tolerate eggs. It's unfortunate really because eggs are SO healthy and good for you!

  34. Every time I saw my HR dip into the 120s, I would "sprint" to get it back over 130. It worked! If I was running, I would think nothing about it being cold. I might do a happy dance, though. LOL. On a bike? Brrrrr! At least the pool is warm.

  35. Good job getting your training in! I know how it feels to be an injured runner, and how it makes you want to be able to go out for a run more than anything else. Hang in there.

We love quiche around here! We have chickens, and often have more eggs than we know what to do with. Quiche is great for feeding a group... and it works for breakfast and for dinner! I love doing a spinach quiche for dinner. Yum!
