Five Runfessions (October)

Hooray it's Friday and also the last one of the month.  I'm linking up for Marcia's Runfessions and the DC Trifecta's Friday Five (where it's free topic day).

Due to a foot injury, it's been over a month since I've run one step, actually 33 days to be exact (nooooo...I'm not counting).  So I must runfess, I have no runfessions.  But other 'fessions, why yes I sure do.

I foodfess...

I had to take an unplanned road trip recently.  It was a long day.  On the way home, I stopped for a treat.  And yes, I always reward myself after an unpleasant task.  This shortbread cookie was the best thing I've put in my mouth in a long time.  Did I feel guilty?  No!  But now I'm in big trouble.  I know where it lives.  I expect it will soon morph into a Christmas ornament, followed by a Valentine heart, then an Easter egg and so on.  Basically, it will always live there.

I swimfess...

I'm always anxious on my way to the pool.  I worry it will be crowded and I'll have to share a lane with a real swimmer.  A swim team practices some mornings.  I thought surely I'd have to give up my lane for them.  But their coach has them double and triple up, so I'm lucky.  I feel bad though, like I'm undeserving of that big old lane all to myself.

{By the way, it's impossible at our house to say "big" without adding "old" to it.  Big old dog.  Big old burger.  Big old fart.  See what I mean?}

I swimfess...

I consider myself the queen of old lady ingenuity.  Knowing I could not get through pool running without music, I first tried clipping my iPod shuffle to a hat.  No good.  The cord was a problem.  The next time, I tried clipping it to a stretchy hair band and wrapping the cord around my ponytail.  It worked like a charm!  The older you get, the less you care what other people think.   I mean seriously here, I.am.running.in.a.pool.

I cyclefess...

The other day on a long bike ride, I decided to remove my Fitbit from my wrist and attach it to my shoe.  I was curious if it would clock my pedal strokes.  It did!  But it also erroneously earned me the Rollercoaster badge.  Up and down, up and down, up and down.  Yep, that's about right.  Oops.

I cyclefess...

Cycling in the dark initially felt freaky.  I decided to use two headlights on my bike; one directional and one spread out.  I also use two different red taillights; one flashing and one LED chaser.  I'm pretty sure I'm visible.  In fact, I sense I look like some mis-shot firework dud burning and sputtering down the road!

Got any 'fessions you need to get off your chest?

I'm linking up with Marcia today from Marcia's Healthy Slice

Please stop by and join in with your Runfessions!

I'm also linking up with the lovely ladies of the DC Trifecta.
I'm sure there will be many interesting topics for free day Friday Five.

  1. I runfessed, too. For the first time in a while. I will say don't worry about the swim team. Working out in a lane with others is helpful to push yourself and keep you honest on your intervals. So I'm sure they don't mind you in a lane one bit! I love the creativity for the music player :) And hilarious about the fitbit! Have a good weekend!

    1. It is very noisy when the swim team is practicing. But, it's also a helpful distraction and I'll take all of that I can get. I can't imagine getting through pool running without music!

  2. At least you are doing it. Who cares what you look like while your doing it. I think everyone else is in their own zone when they workout too. That cookie is almost too cute to eat. .almost! Happy Halloween!

    1. Exactly. The end goal is more important than appearance, right? I think that cookie was so good because it had been so long since I've had one.

  3. I love your ingenuity! Where I pool run the lifeguards jam heavy metal so there's that. I used to worry if someone was in the lane next to me. See? I've made progress....but wait I haven't even been to the pool this month. :( Thanks so much for linking up!

    1. I don't make eye contact with any of the swimmers. Awkward.

  4. That's great that you took your workout to the pool. I know that's what I should've done with my leg probs but I've runfess that I did not do much besides runners yoga while I was down. You are awesome and I hope you foot heals up already!

    1. I hope your leg is much better! I'm trying to keep my plan of a January marathon so I have to stay very active from a cardio standpoint. Some days, I just want to convalesce!

  5. Way to find a way to get your music while pool running! I wouldn't care either, music definitely helps me. Haha, that's funny about the roller coaster badge with your fitbit. Cute cookie. You deserved it! :)

    1. I had no intention of setting any records or doing anything special with the Fitbit. I was just curious if it would count my pedaling. Oops. Now I really need to earn that badge.

  6. Mmm, cookie! I have to make sure I stay away from the local bakeries or i'll be taking all the cookies home with me.

  8. It would be so easy to just not aqua jog, but you're disciplined & determined -- one of my mantras, even though it's already totally true for me & you too, I suspect -- kudos!

    1. I think I know we are two cookies that would not take the easy route. Double Ds! (OMG. That is really funny in my case!)

  9. I love your shuffle set up for pool running. Isn't it wonderful how you get to a certain age and don't care what other people think about you. It is one of my favorite things about being older! The cookie looks amazing and since I have given up treats and alcohol the last few weeks while I am tapering for NYC Marathon, my computer is covered with drool. Sunday night will be a foodfest in NYC!

    1. I guess there are a few good things about getting older. That would be one. I hope you eat all the things you want to Sunday night after having a fabulous race!

  10. At least the cookie requires an errand to get. I am getting nervous about the holiday baking season since I seem to have misplaced my restraint recently.

    1. Absolutely! It's so much harder to overindulge when it takes a special trip to the store to do so.

  11. I love your 'fessions! One of the reasons I haven't tried pool running is the whole music thing. They play the hokiest music at our park district pool. I like you ingenuity!

    1. I use the pool at the Y and they don't play squat. If it was warm weather, I'd be rocking out in my own back yard. Timing is everything, you know?

  13. Hehe, you know where the cookie lives. I do that too, but thankfully I don't want to take a good drive to get to places, just for a cookie. I thought when I worked in downtown Boston I'd be in the north end all the time. Nope.

  14. Cute post and that cookie looks so good! My runfession: Since I'm not training for any races these days, I stop a lot to take pictures of the scenery. Like A LOT a lot :)

  15. These are great! Those are one of my favorite types of cookies, I could eat them year-round too! Love the idea for pool running with music - I've always heard pool running is a great way to stay active while coping with injury.

  16. Ha I love your description of what you look like biking. Now that's creative for sure. I'll like it when time changes in the morning but not at night not at all!!!

    1. I think even with the time change, I will still start my ride in the dark. Where I ride during the week is rural. There are sticks, limbs, pine cones, and nuts in the road. I've got to be able to see well. The other day, something fell from a tree and hit my in the upper arm. It hurt!

  19. Ha! I just said "you gotta do what you gotta do" in a comment above! I'm having trouble with foot cramps in the water, but I always have. I'm not sure there is anything I can do about that. I'm way over this injury, as you can appreciate. Time for some serious light at the end of the tunnel.

  23. I never met a cookie that I did not like and then the cupcake store opened up. She handed me a reward card, what? rewards for eating cupcakes, game over! LOL! I thought about you yesterday morning on the way to my 10K- people where already out in the dark on the bikes with those crazy red lights flashing!! Be safe!

  24. My foodfession would be cookies like that...all the time. I can't say "no" to a cookie. Or Halloween candy. :-)
I totally get your anxiety about a crowded pool, too. I don't swim, but I feel that way about a busy gym. Like I *know* nobody is going to be watching me, but I'm afraid I'll stick out like a sore thumb among the *real* gym rats. Thanks for visiting my blog through the blog hop!

    1. Bakery or homemade cookies and cake are my weakness. I would be awfully nervous at the gym because it's been ages since I've used any equipment there. Total fish out of water!

  25. I actually love that you are pool running! In the almost 3 years I have been injured I didn't even once think about trying that:) Not that I have a place I could do it now, but in the summer I so could have gone to my sisters pool and done it and enjoyed embarresing her and with her neighbors in the process, LOL
Since I am not running right now, I don't know if I can call it a runfession. But I bought a small bag of Halloween candy to hand out, of course I probably shouldn't of bought it 2 weeks ago, because come Halloween I had to go buy another, because yes in 2 weeks I had almost ate all of it, the only thing I feel guilty about it, not feeling guilty for eating it, LOL

    1. I runfess that I miss that the kids have gotten to old for trick or treat. I'm the one who always got the Mounds and Almond Joy because nobody else likes coconut! I bought absolutely no Halloween candy because I didn't think we were going to be at home. I should go buy one Almond Joy for old times sake.
