I've seen my fair share of spectator signs. I don't run with my phone (too heavy) and if I did I wouldn't stop to take a picture. Add to that my typical zoned-out race state and they tend to fade from memory. But, here are a few that left enough of an impression to remember.
I saw this one after the game first launched and was all the rage.
Candy Crush
It, Allison!!
It, Allison!!
I saw this one over and over at a Spring half marathon.
The spectator did an awesome job of moving ahead of her runner.
At one point, I yelled to her "I've seen you 3 times now"!
You'd better
not be WALKEN
not be WALKEN
I saw this one in the Fall of 2013 after the disastrous debut of the government's website.
At least YOU are
faster than the
Obamacare website
This one is always a favorite and makes me smile!
GO!
Random Stranger
GO!
Please tell me one of your favorite signs!

I've seen it lots of times now, so it's lost its novelty, but the first time I saw the "Worst. Parade. EVER!!!" sign, I cracked up.
ReplyDeleteYeah. That is a good one. I guess they all get over used at some point.
DeleteI usually don't run with my phone either at races and never on training runs. Except this year at Princess half marathon I decided to take it and got so many pics. I'm glad I did. -L
ReplyDeleteI get my friends to send me their phone pics. Ha! Yeah, I'm that person.
DeleteI do like seeing the last one, since I know it's for me! ;-)
ReplyDeleteExactly. I feel they made it just for me. Ha.
DeleteGlad to see people being more original! I'm so over a lot of these signs, especially Worst Parade Ever.
ReplyDeleteI love the very creative original ones, although I would be able to come up with nothing.
DeleteMy favorite sign was in Georgetown in the 2010 Marine Corps Marathon. I wanted to take a picture, but I was pushing hard so I didn't stop. On a huge florescent orange poster board, the person had written, "Don't Poop Your Pants!"
ReplyDeleteThat one always gets a thumbs up response from me!
DeleteI saw one at RnR DC that said something about if it was easy, it would be your mom. I don't know why but I found that one hilarious in the moment :)
ReplyDeleteThat's a good one too. Anything to make us laugh!
DeleteI agree with a lot of the other folks that I'm over the "Worst Parade Ever" signs. I love the "Go Random Stranger"! I especially love the ones that are from folks that clearly understand what us runners are going through!
ReplyDeleteI get aggravated with signs about its almost over or the finish line is near...at like mile 8. No it's not! They clearly don't get it.
DeleteI always love the one that says, "I don't know you but I'm proud of you"... always hits me in the feels
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure I've ever seen that one. I like it!!
Delete"There will be a day you can no longer run, today is NOT that day!!!"
ReplyDeleteVery true. That's a great one! I often think of those who can't run during a race.
DeleteHa! That Obamacare one is creative and hilarious.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea for a post! :)
I love the ones that are current and unique.
DeleteHa ha! My favorite sign was just before shortly after the start of a half marathon on a trail with a very slight downgrade (like a rails to trail) to the finish. The sign said: It's all downhill from here!
ReplyDeleteI would love to see that one, but only if it were true.
DeleteI would never stop to take a picture of signs either when I run, but I will say I sometimes love reading them!
ReplyDeleteI once ran a marathon and through that particular part of Georgia in community they had signs about every 30-50 feet, and each one told a piece of a story. I have to be honest, I don't remember any pain during the miles of 14-16 because I was so interested in getting to the next sign to read.
I love reading the signs. I just have a hard time remembering them. LOL. That would be a GREAT distraction. I've never seen that during a race.
DeleteI don't take pictures either, so it's up to my addled race brain to try and remember. Usually I'll remember a week later and go "oh yeah."
ReplyDeleteI know! I try to hard to remember them but can't.
DeleteI do love that No Walken one!
ReplyDeleteI think the only reason I remembered that one is she moved so many times and I was very impressed by that.
DeleteI used to take pictures but lately I have been focusing on getting faster and PR's. So like you I have rely on my brain to remember the signs. Still to this day my favorite sign is "Run like it is the start of the Hunger Games!" If you haven't read the books or seen the movie it doesn't make much sense but if you have is it is super funny!
ReplyDeleteHa! That's a good one. And one I have not seen. I did see the movie, at least the first one.
Deletehaha - the Walken sign :) haha That's fantastic
ReplyDeleteI was so impressed with the spectator. She moved ahead of her runner so many times. That takes a lot of effort and planning with road closures!
DeleteHahahahaha! These had me literally laughing out loud. Like almost fall out of my chair laughing! What a fun theme - seriously. Greatness!
ReplyDeleteSome people are so creative. I could never think of these!
DeleteLove these! My favorite sign is one I've seen at the Disney races - "The happiest place on earth is the finish line." =D
ReplyDeleteI also love the one Michelle shared above about ""There will be a day you can no longer run, today is NOT that day!!!"
Oh yeah, I love the Disney one too! That is the happiest place on earth!
DeleteThese are hilarious!!
ReplyDeletei ahve to admit-I see the signs along the runs bu tI really don't pay that much attention to them. Clearly I am missing out on the laughs!
-Tamieka@fitballingrunningmom
I like to read them because they are a great distraction, but I just can't remember them later.
DeleteLove them! I love the guy that holds the sign- I trained for 6 months to hold this sign for you!!
ReplyDeleteThat one is very funny!
DeleteThese are awesome! I saw one the other day that I just loved, and I hate to bring politics/religion into a post comment, but it's the only sign I can think of of late that has stood out. So hope you don't mind my sharing, although if you hate it I won't be offended if you delete my comment:)
ReplyDeleteIt was a Welcome to Idaho sign they have on the boarder and it reads. You may not like guns, that is your right. You may not believe in God and that is your choice. But if someone breaks into your home, the first two things you are going to do are; Call someone with a gun, and Pray they get there in time.
Signs like that really make you think, don't they? I guess that is the point in creating them.
DeleteI like the sign that says "yes, random stranger, I am proud of you too". That gets me every time!
ReplyDeleteOh, that's a good one. I'm not sure I've seen that exact saying.
DeleteI love the random stranger one too! Two funny ones I saw at my last race:
ReplyDeleteWorst Parade Ever
Don't **insert poop emoji here** yourself
Ha! I would find the emoji symbol to be very funny!
Deleteaw, thanks for shouting out our sign. that's so sweet! have a great weekend :)
ReplyDeleteYou are welcome!
DeleteI love your choices of race signs, but I would never stop to take photos of them. The one about the random stranger is my favorite and I have seen that several times at different races. In fact, I did not carry my phone fro NYCM and while I miss having some pre race photos and the finisher photos, my race experience was enhanced by being phone free!
ReplyDeleteI've carried my phone very few times in races. And I've NEVER stopped to take a picture, not even at Disney. Now that phones are getting bigger, I just don't see how anyone carries them. It would irritate me.
DeleteI run with my phone but I don't stop to take pictures! I do love the Walken sign!
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure where I would even stash my latest phone, it's so big. I can't imagine putting it in a belt. That would be annoying to me. I guess I'll figure that out if I feel I need to carry it for a really big race.
DeleteThose are cute ones!
ReplyDeleteThanks! I hope I get the opportunity to see some different ones very soon!
