Five Runfessions (November)

I found this poor little lonely discarded guy lying in the street on a ride about a week after Halloween.  I looped by several times before finally deciding to stop.  After inspection, he didn't appear to be smashed or tampered with.  I fess up...I planned to eat him.  After all, I had eaten zero candy on Halloween. Alas, he mysteriously disappeared from the kitchen counter before I got around to it.

Speaking of candy, I went for a hair cut recently.  My boys had been in a couple of weeks prior to me.  When I got ready to leave, my hairdresser said "I heard you like Almond Joys" and dumped a big double handful of fun-sized (not the minis!) in my purse.  They rode around in there very nonchalantly for several days, maybe even a week.  And then one day >>> BOOM.  They spoke to me.  I fess up...I ate them all in one sitting.  {Sometimes you feel like a nut...}

I saw the oddest thing on a bike ride recently.  A lady was vacuuming her lawn.  I fess up...I stopped and stared.  I couldn't believe what I was seeing!  Am I missing something?   Is this a new fun thing that I am way out of the loop on?  Should I stop what I'm doing and go vacuum my lawn?

After last weekend's 41 miles on my bike and then the next day's half marathon in the pool, I was whipped!  My legs were certainly feeling it so out came my trusty (perhaps too tight) compression sleeves.  I fess up...I think it is so cool that "MOJO" is literally embossed into my skin when I take them off.  That's the name of one of my dogs.

I fess up...I'm having a hard time wanting to get up on weekdays at 5:00 to cycle in the cold.  For me, riding in the dark already necessitates a put-your-big-girl-panties-on, suck-it-up-buttercup, mentality.  But add the cold to it and, UGH.  I need a good mantra to get me up and moving. Any suggestions?

Do you have anything you need to fess up?

  1. I have a tough time getting outside in the cold too. But I always remind myself about how badly I'll feel if I don't go. The guilt always does me in!

    1. You are right. On the days I get out there before I go to work, I feel so much better. Much more energy. The guilt usually drags me out of the bed too. That and my cycling clothes are staring at me.

  2. I love the purse full of almond joys! Sounds like me, I would devour in one setting! As far as the cold workouts in the AM. My difficult one is jumping in the pool to swim. I know it won't feel good at first but I will warm up and it will feel better. I didn't even want to strip down to running clothes for my turkey trot yesterday! I always have to remind myself that I will heat up once I get going.

    1. I think it's just more the of thought of getting in that pool for me. The one I use feels pretty warm. Sweat is usually rolling down my face after about 5 minutes.

  3. I am so, so lucky that I don't have to go out at dark o'clock.

But I still have trouble getting myself out the door later in the day! We're simply fighting our human nature to hibernate.

    1. Ahhh...that's what it is. My need to be a bear. That answers why I've been stuffing my face too. LOL.

  4. I'd do be eating all the Almond Joys as well. Once you start you just can't stop. Dark/cold workouts? Just do it. Thanks for linking up and enjoy the rest of the holiday weekend!

    1. I have been just sucking it up and doing it. It's getting tougher these days though. I need a dangling carrot. Something.

  5. You are hilarious today! the lawn vacuuming is very strange and love the candy story. I never would have admitted that one!

    1. The candy story is true. And they were delicious. I felt bad about 15 seconds. I'm still perplexed about lawn vacuuming.

  6. Yes, the cold, crisp, peaceful (and massively windy, butt-freezing) weather of winter. I totally hate doing time on the 'mill, so I take it outside. I'm doing the Runner's World #RWRunStreak again this year (this is my third consecutive year doing it), and I have already fessed-up on my running page about it...so I have to get outside ;-) No excuses. Having the cyber world to keep me accountable works! (and the husband blows the lawn, never vacuums LOL)

    1. Well, I gave away my treadmill. So there's that. Yeah, this blog keeps me accountable. I haven't slacked...yet. Tell your hubs he is apparently doing the lawn work all wrong! LOL.

  7. I haven't gotten out in the morning at all. Good for you! I wouldn't have waited to eat the candy (esp it were Kitkats.)

    1. KitKats are yummy too. I was so good about staying from all of that at Halloween! I just HAD to get a purse full of candy!

  8. hahaha, i've been taking a short running break before i start training again and it has been AWESOME! i've been loving only running for fun, only when i feel like it. :) that vacuum thing is so weird!

    1. Well since I'm on a big injury-imposed running break, I can't wait to get back at it. I still don't get the vacuuming thing.

  9. I am also having a hard time getting up early enough to get a morning run in for the day :( I have been using my lunch break for running this past week!

    1. I wish I could run at lunch occasionally. We are so busy at work, I usually don't take a break at all. Now, I need to be doing some Christmas shopping at lunch too.

  10. What? She is vacuuming the lawn? Don't tell the hubby or he will want to do that next! P.S. I love Almond Joy's!

    1. Yes, vacuuming the lawn. I'm sure there is more to that story. Acorns? Nuts? My kids always gave me anything with coconut they received while trick-or-treating.

  11. Vacuuming the lawn just sounds crazy! Haha. It is tough getting up in the morning to work out, especially when it's cold. That's awesome how much cycling you're doing.

    1. I'm glad to know nobody has heard of vacuuming the lawn. I thought maybe it popular in other places in the USA and just hadn't caught on here! Cycling is tough in the cold and WIND. Argh.

  12. Hmm, is vacuuming any quieter than leaf blowing? If so, I'd be on board with it! I am struggling to get up and go running in the dark too. Wah, wah, wah!

    1. Very good point. I'm all for anything that makes less noise! I think I'll be better this week because it won't be as cold.

  13. You are the second blog I have come across since Halloween in which someone found candy during their workout and ate it! No judgement here- I would never leave a perfectly wrapped piece of candy laying on the ground!

    1. Last year, I watched a Snickers mini lie in the road for weeks. I was amazed it never got smashed by a car! Someone eventually picked it up!

  14. I confess too that I can't have only one piece of candy. I would eat them all. I often eat a box of sour patch kids in one setting!

    1. I'm kind of all or nothing. I can absolutely do without! But, on the flip side...eating one is never enough.

  15. Ha! This whole post cracked me up! I give you so much credit for early morning bike rides! For some reason it seems much more daunting than early morning runs. Maybe because I think it would be colder since you have all the wind from going fast. I think I'd be breaking out my face mask already!

    1. It does seem more daunting! I wouldn't think twice about a cold, dark run. I'd love it! Why is that? Maybe I feel more vulnerable on the bike, perhaps?

  16. Wait, so you picked up a candy bar from the street?! lol Why didn't ask the lady why she was vacuuming her lawn? You've left me wondering now. Compression socks! They are just so tight. I've gotten to where I almost don't want to put them on because it's SO hard to peel them off! I get all crazy like I need to cut them off. It's bad. This was a fun post! Enjoy the weekend!

    1. I should have asked that lady! But she was too far away and with the noise of the vacuum she'd never hear me. Maybe she's on to something! Compression sleeves are very hard to get off, almost as bad as a sweaty running bra.

  17. The only mantra that I have used is "You can do hard things". I agree I hate getting up early, and then if its colder it just makes it worse! I have only been able to do my workouts after work (3:30pm) so I try and go shortly after I get home so I can be in the warmth of the sun, but it's still cold. brrr...

    1. It's dark before I even leave work. Plus when I get home, everybody is standing around asking "what's for supper?". If I don't do it in the wee hours of the morning, it doesn't get done.

  18. I am always very confused by the lady you saw vacuuming her lawn! Let me know if you figure out what that was all about;)
It can be so tough to get moving when its cold!

    1. I still loop by her house on weekends. I'm watching for her. I may stop and just ask next time! Maybe she's on to something we don't know.

  19. 30 degrees would be tough, especially if there is any wind at all! I think 40 is probably my limit, or I'd like it to be anyway. Truly, I guess there is appropriate and/or enough clothing to handle all situations. I just wanted to whine about it. LOL.

  20. I want to see the lady vacuuming her lawn. That is taking OCD to a whole new level! I am having trouble getting out early now for my runs and it has nothing to do with cold weather, but all to do with the dark. I just read about another runner who was attacked/raped and if I am on my own, I want complete daylight.

    1. I keep looking for the vacuuming lady every time I ride in that neighborhood. I just thought that was very odd. Safety comes first! I always stick to my own neighborhood when running in the dark. Other people are usually out dog walking and running.

  21. I confess during my half this weekend, while running I can't tell you how many unopened GU's there were on the road. I so wanted to stop and pick them up. I'd have a stash of GU's to last me several races and long runs!
