Celebrate Small Victories

I'm going to be absolutely selfish today and talk about me.  Me, me, me and what I have to celebrate.  Please just bear with me for a moment.

I went to the doctor Monday after ten weeks of healing my metatarsal stress fracture.  10 weeks!  I was still experiencing pain which made no sense.  I found out my fracture is completely, and she repeated this many times over, healed. (I also inferred it had been healed for some time.)  There is absolutely nothing wrong with any of my foot bones or joints.  Celebrate!

Apparently the lingering pain is caused from a probable neuroma, which is common after foot trauma.  The doctor indicated it would not hurt anything to run with this neuroma.  Celebrate!  She cautioned me not to go run 30 miles the next day.  {Now why would she say something like that?}

Tuesday, I decided I had to see if I could run with the neuroma pain.  I promised myself, PROMISED, I would not go over 2 miles.  And that's what I did, with no stops.  It felt uncomfortable at times, but my foot also felt strong -- if that makes any sense.  I was also quite pleased and surprised with my pace.  Celebrate!

Wednesday, was a planned bike ride but when I woke up late and at 38 degrees I decided I'd try another short run.  I promised myself, PROMISED, I would not run over 3 miles.  And that's what I did, with no stops.  It was my favorite type of run...a progression: 10:00/9:30/9:00 (ish) Celebrate!

Today I celebrate my small victories.  I know have a long road (pun intended) ahead of me.  But I plan to celebrate every teeny tiny victory along the way.  Oh, here's one more.  I have on real shoes today -- no running shoes, no sports flip flops with socks (oh yes, I did that!).  Celebrate!

What will you celebrate today?

  2. Yay! Best news ever.

BTW, I had some residual pain after my 3rd metatarsal stress fracture. And that big toe, well he still yacks at me occasionally! He doesn't like sleeping in the faux Strassburg sock either. Apparently flexion is not my friend...

    1. This pain may be something that lasts awhile or may even be permanent. If that's the case, I hope it will lessen somewhat! I'm very relieved the fracture has healed.

  15. Congrats on your foot. I am sorry about the neuroma. It can suck. I find that my patients do well with some padding in their running shoes. If you have any questions do not hesitate to ask.

    1. I am wearing my HR strap monitor on my runs for the first time ever. My average HR is definitely higher than when cycling by about 10 beats. I hope that will come down a little as I get used to running again.

  23. 10 weeks felt like an eternity! I'm glad to know this residual pain is nothing fatal. Maybe it was good I had it to give my foot extra healing time? I'm going with that anyway! Hopefully the pain will go away soon. Believe me, I'll try every remedy I can find!

  24. Yay! I'll toast to healthy feet! And to no more socks + flip flops!

  27. Yay, Holly, you certainly have a lot to celebrate! Your persistence in cardio cross-training during your injury are paying off now. I have a neuroma that I've had for quite some time. Metatarsal bumps in my orthotics have really helped with the pain.

    Thanks for linking up!

  29. So excited for you, and I really do hope you are able to get back and ready for the Disney Marathon, I know you don't have much time. But you've done really well keeping in such great shape on the bike, that it might just be a matter of getting used to being on the feet again to pull it off:) Fingers crossed for you too!
Love the last picture on the bike, man it looks like summer there so pretty! I have a fresh new foot of snow out my window and while I am excited about the snow, give me a few weeks and I am going to be wishing I was somewhere warm like you are!
Is it my imagination, or did you change up the colors on your blog? They look great!

    1. I was sweltering in that picture. Thanks for noticing the colors! I've been playing around with creating a logo - but I'm still not happy with it yet. Part of that process required a few changes.
