This week did not start well.  I had a twinge in my left lower hamstring.  How did I hurt it, you might ask?  Foam rolling on Sunday night.  I kid you not.  It was perfectly fine until then.  Talk about being aggravated!  I did nothing but wallow in self pity for 2 days, lament over the fact my timing with marathon training sucks, and eat fruit dip by the spoonful.  I decided to try an easy run on Wednesday morning even though it was still painful.  I was certain I had not hurt it while running so I thought maybe I could run without pain.  It was OK.   I dodged yet another bullet.

By Saturday, the hamstring issue was completely gone.  The weekend was utterly and gloriously exhausting with triathlon training and two lake excursions...water skiing, running, open water swims and cycling. Add my favorite Oysters Rockefeller, Mexican food, a few Margaritas and it doesn't get any better.  Just ask me what I'm doing Monday.  Nothing!  Actually floating and smoking a Boston Butt would be the correct answer.   Again -- with heat indexes well into the 100s, water is absolutely necessary.

Here's a couple of water skiing pics.  They are never clear as the rope is 75 feet long.

I hope everyone has (had) a wonderful and safe Independence Day celebration!

How will you (did you) celebrate?

And that's a wrap!

  1. Sorry about your hamstring! I have a Rumble Roller and it can be intense, so I understand about injuring during rolling. :( Glad you're feeling better though. Happy 4th!

    1. I've been foam rolling for years, so I'm not quite sure what I did wrong. I hope I don't do it again, though.

  2. I hate when good things hurt us! Glad it was short lived.

I'm gonna have so much fun trying to integrate a new dog . . . I'm already exhausted & I have to get up early tomorrow.

    1. Several times this year I've had issues with preventative measures causing pain. It makes me want to stop all of it and do nothing but run. Good luck with that precious new doggie.

  3. Thank goodness for short lived injuries! Sounds like you're having a fantastic holiday weekend. I have a race tomorrow morning, and then it's total relaxation for me. Happy Independence Day!

As always, thanks for the linkup!

  4. LOL at smoking a Boston Butt! I think we will be grilling salmon and steaks. The water skiing pics are fantastic!

  5. I love that you water ski so much! Sounds like you're having a lovely holiday weekend! Glad that your hamstring is better. I've aggravated my hamstring by foam rolling as well. I've been told that I need to be careful as I can be a bit too "enthusiastic" ha ha. Happy 4th and stay cool!

    1. I wish I know exactly what I did to aggravate my hamstring. I didn't think I was too aggressive with the foam roller. I stayed in the water most of the day. It was stifling.

  6. Don't you just hate when we hurt ourselves while trying to "better" ourselves?

Actually I think your pics look pretty good for as far away as they are!

    1. That is what is always so frustrating! We are doing things to prevent injuries and our preventative measures cause another injury. Argh.

  7. that sucks about the hamstring but at least it's on the mend! I fell almost 2 weeks ago on my knee and i think it is finally back to normal-Ive missed running!

  9. Lucky you to have such great weather. Take advantage of the day off today and glad to hear you dodged a bullet. That can be so frustrating.... ugh. When is your next triathlon ? Training for anything specific ?

    1. The triathlon is two weeks away. After that, I've got to really buckle down and concentrate on just marathon training. Although, cycling will make good cross training.

  11. Your waterskiing pictures are awesome! I love all water sports... which might be why we landed ourselves at a lake to celebrate the 4th of July. We won't be waterskiing, but we will playing in and around the water as soon as the sun comes out! :) Enjoy your weekend!!

Oh, you make me want to get out on the water!

    1. July 4th weekend is always so crowded at the lake but it ended up being OK. All the boat traffic and waves just wear me out so much quicker than calm water. It gave me a chance to practice open water swimming too.

  15. Glad your hamstring is ok! Love your waterskiing pics! I'd be in the water too with heat indexes in the 100's! We're heading to the pool today and then a friends picnic before watching the fireworks! Enjoy your 4th Holly!

    1. I don't remember this kind of heat last year. And I probably said that last year too. It's hard to wrap your head around marathon training in it.

  16. It sucks about your hamstring but I'm glad you're okay! Two days off isn't too terrible, really. Ironic that you hurt it foam rolling, but it happens. Heck, I've been super sore after yoga classes I did to "recover". Oops. Looks like you had a great time water skiing, and I hope you have a wonderful 4th.

  17. I'm glad your hamstring is ok!!! It stinks when you think that you're injured, and are too nervous to do any thing!! Happy 4th! We are going to do a ton of fireworks and eat hotdogs!

    1. I'm very relieved it healed quickly. I don't really know what I did out of the ordinary to injure it. Hotdogs sound like the perfect American tradition.

  19. Sorry to hear about your hamstring! I'm glad it's feeling better but it's a bit disconcerting when aches like that emerge. Foam rolling can aggravate already irritated. I hope you have a wonderful 4th!

    1. If I had known it was that irritated, I would have never foam rolled it. I'll have to be very careful in the future.

    1. It's beyond frustrating when something we do to make ourselves feel better causes the problem! I'm glad your problem was short lived too.

    1. In my mind, summer = water skiing. I hate to give up a day on the lake since I only get a handful of them every year. It's not like running where you can do it all year long.

  23. Sorry about your hamstring, but I'm glad it's better now! And yes, water is must! We're up close to a heat index of 110 all week this week. We went swimming yesterday and I was sweating. It's that hot. So gross! Hope you have a great week!

  27. That's crazy that you made your hammy mad by rolling it! I don't know about you, but my hamstrings usually yell at me after skiing. You ski more than I do though, so you might be used to it.

    1. My upper body is usually what yells at me after water skiing. Pretty loudly too!

  28. UGH. Hamstring pain is NO joke. I'm close to being over & done (well, I'm at least at the minimal maintenance stage) with the PF, and wouldn't you know it? The hamstring is feeling a little "off" now. This sport keeps us humble, right?

  31. I did read that foam rolling if something hurts could inflame it and make it worse but I've actually never heard of foam rolling CAUSING pain! Well, I'm glad it went away quickly and you got to enjoy a fun weekend filled with things you love. Thanks for hosting the linkup, Holly--I should say that more but I really do appreciate your taking the time to host it and connect all of us!

  32. Glad your hamstring is feeling better! I was at my parents place for the 4th and it was cooler than normal. when i started my run Sunday, it was in the 50s!!! I was in heaven. It did eventually warm up into the 80s and was gorgeous weather on Monday but it actually would have probably been a little on the cool side if we had gone to the lake! Margaritas sound wonderful! :)

  37. I had a twinge in my hamstring too last week but it was because of the killer balancing ball workout we did. OMG my hammy's were screaming that night. I'm going back for more punishment this week too! It's an addiction!
I got in some water therapy in my kayak in the ocean. I didn't wear my watch to track it but based on the road I'd say we went close to 3 miles. I'm so signing up for the run, kayak, run race in September!!!

  38. No hamstring issues! You are a rockstar with all that swimming and I think a triathlete is born. I celebrated the holiday by not murdering my MIL.

Spent the 4th on our boat followed by fireworks. The water is still very cold up here.
