Hullabaloo For You?

I've been singing Bare Necessities from Jungle Book since seeing this week's Wednesday Word. [Perhaps because of the character Baloo?]   Anyhoo... I'm probably the most un-hullabaloo-esque person you'll ever meet.  Got drama?  I don't want any!  Don't throw a kink into my perfectly tranquil life {...bahahaha...}.  My family will tell you I do not get dramatic, even when there is plenty of reason to do so.  I'm the calm in the storm.  It's my job to be the voice of reason amid the chaos.  I actually think this might irritate everyone slightly.  😉

When it comes to racing, I don't need the hullabaloo there either.  One of my favorite half marathons is held inside Callaway Gardens in the dead of winter.  Icy ponds.  Frosty breath.  Rolling hills.  Ribbons of curving pavement.  Not one spectator.  No after party.  {I surely wouldn't consider a Duplex Cookie and Gatorade mixed and served from old-school coolers anywhere close to a party.} No hype here -- just beautiful forested running.

Yes, hullabaloo sometimes has it's place.  I recently ran the Chicago Marathon.   With 1.2 million spectators along the route, the energy was electric.  At times, the noise was deafening.  While it's fun to experience that, it's definitely not a requirement.  I do not need the song and dance.  After all, I'll be performing my own when it's over.

I guess Disney's over-the-topness would definitely be considered hullabaloo.  That's the next marathon I'll be experiencing (again).  I absolutely will enjoy every second of it too.  It's goose bump inducing to run down Main Street amidst all the fanfare.   But once it's over, I'll be craving my peaceful, quiet pre-dawn runs.   Seeking the calm after the storm.

  1. Yes, ma'am. Calm after the storm feels good. The ride home on the train after my Chicago marathons was very peaceful. It gave me a chance to soak it all in. I kind of liked that... like savasana after a yoga class.

  2. I think that all of it has its place. I very much enjoyed the one Disney race that I did (running through the Cinderella Castle as the sun was rising was AMAZING and that memory will always stick with me!), but I also loved the Rehoboth Beach Half Marathon which was just a quiet run through a beach town (granted, with epic food at the end).

  3. For a half marathon, I want hullabaloo. For other races, I don't care all that much. Mostly I just want to have fun while running, and let's face it, I can do that on any given Saturday with my running buddies, LOL.

  4. I swing both ways. :)

Sometimes I'm the calm in the midst of the storm; sometimes I'm not.

  5. I prefer smaller quiet races but I can be persuaded to run a big one.

  6. I'm so excited for you to run disney again. Of course you know I love the hullabaloo of Disney races but I have learned to seek out other races that are more local and ya know what, I've really enjoyed them too.

  7. I get this, I'm going to miss the hullabaloo of Disney in January. Well actually I'm going to hate I can't be there with you! I have a feeling you'll be at my next marathon, I wonder where it's going to be...

  8. I am so not a hullabaloo gal when it comes to races. Granted, I appreciate it when it's there but I can take it or leave it.....
I do hope you soak in the fun of Disney!!!

  9. I can go both ways on this issue....I like all the fanfare of the big events, but get totally annoyed when the crowds of people get in my way (especially the peeps who are rude and/or inconsiderate).

  10. I love all these perspectives on race hullabaloo. That tranquil half sounds lovely, though.

  11. Love the word hullabaloo!!! Very creative selection. I am with Kimberly H - I can go both ways on these events. The fun events have a lot of energy and spectacle, but the logistics can be a pain and I don't enjoy fighting all the massive seas of people!

  12. I love the big races and all of the hullabaloo that comes with them! The energy of the crowds from start to finish keeps me going!

  13. I'm more of a quiet race kind of a gal. But there is definitely something to be said about all the hullabaloo during a marathon. It makes those long, awkward miles a little more tolerable!

  14. Not surprised you're singing Bare Necessities with your big Disney race coming up. They sure are a big production, but you're right - totally worth it! I have to say that for marathons, I like a big race atmosphere, but shorter distances I can go either way. Can't wait to hear how it goes - I now you're going to smoke it!

  15. I haven't run one of the big city races for so long that I'd kind of forgotten about all of the hullabaloo associated with races. I miss that - sort of...

    Thanks for linking up!
