I had been wanting a change of scenery for a long ride and planned to cycle at Callaway Gardens last weekend. Unfortunately, the weather was not on board with my plan.  This weekend the weather was dialed in and off I went early Saturday morning.  Callaway has a wonderful bike trail system that meanders deep into the hilly Georgia woods.  The gate attendant told me it had just been repaved.  {She also asked me if I was over 65.  Heavy Sigh....}

Although I had planned to cycle the roads, I decided to try the trails.  True to her word, it was as smooth as glass.  My Garmin lost satellite connection several times in the woods with the surrounding hills. Luckily, I had recently installed a no-frills {aka: cheap economical} Cat Eye Velo 9 bike computer.  It did the job just fine.  It fact, it's easier to see its display compared to my Garmin watch.

All of the bridges are numbered so you can't get lost.  But, make sure to get a map!

After about 17 miles of hair-pinned turns and thus burning up my brakes, I decided to ride mostly on the roads.  It was difficult to get up to speed on the trails as well.  It is off season and there was little traffic to worry about.  I also made a lightning fast clothing change as it was getting warm in my capris and 3/4 zip top.  I put on a much thinner long sleeve shirt and shorts.   Back to work!

Their roads are my favorites to both run and ride!

The scenery is beautiful.  With countless lakes, bridges, golf course venues, and yes even a few azaleas blooming already,  I tried to limit my picture taking.   I was there to ride, after all.  But I couldn't help stopping a few times during my 42.3 mile ride.

Even after shifting to roads, I still did a few short trails segments.  They were just so peaceful!

Can you see the ducks?

Callaway is very shady but there are a few sunny stretches.

I'm completely satisfied after 42.3 miles!

It was one of those days where you feel grateful to be outside.  To feel the sun.  To move.  To breathe hard.  To sweat.   As a bonus, I stopped for a coffee date with our college kid on my drive home. PoPo took me out for my favorite Oysters Rockefeller that evening too.  A.Wonderful.Day.  Sunday it was too nice to stay inside so I opted for another outdoor ride logging 17.7 miles.  Why not, right?  And yeah, I felt a wee urge to even out my mileage for the week.  {Point 3?  No can do!}

Weekly Recap:

3 Indoor Trainer  = 30.0
2 Outdoor Rides = 60.0

Total Cycling Miles = 90

Hip/Glute Strength Sessions = 2

And that's a wrap!

Does uneven mileage bother you?

Where do you like to go for a change of scenery?

  1. I'm envious of your bike rides! As warm as our winter has been, it's still too cold to get on the bike. I'm not complaining tho--I've enjoyed my mostly very comfy running conditions!

    1. And I'm envious of your super comfy running conditions! I can't believe how warm it's been the last couple of days. I'll be whining about the heat and humidity in no time.

  2. Wow you have logged a lot of bike miles this week! You are totally inspiring me to get outside and bike. I usually don't do it until April. I plan to bring in my bike for a tune up this week. Thanks for the linkup it's fun!

    1. I haven't had much of a winter to worry about so the temps have been mostly comfortable for cycling. A few mornings were too cold this week and I put my bike on the trainer. I have had to deal with some wind -- and I don't like that at all! I'm so glad you are enjoying this linkup!

  3. Now, if I had access to trails such as those, I'd definitely be a much more enthusiastic cyclist. Wow! Totally envious....

    1. This was a bit of a drive for me but totally worth it. I've run half marathons inside Callaway and my first triathlon was there too. I'll definitely return.

  4. I remember watching a PBS gardening show that was filmed at Callaway Gardens. My mom loved it so I would see it whenever I visited my parents. It seems like a gorgeous place to ride or run. Glad you got to go on Saturday!

Thanks, as always, for the linkup!

    1. It's a great weekend destination place! In addition to the beautiful grounds and trails, they have a Spa, Discovery Center, Butterfly Center, and a Beach plus other activities going on -- especially in the summer.

    1. I just love being in the great outdoors. Their trails are open to runners too. I saw a few walkers but only one runner.

  6. Most of the time uneven mileage doesn't bother me. I'm anal about some things, not others.

Did I miss something? Is there a reason you're not running?

That looks sooooooo lovely. I really miss sunshine -- but I also don't envy you your summers.

  7. That seems like a lovely place to ride. That gate attended needs glasses. Clearly you are not a day over 40;)

  8. Oh my goodness! Callaway Gardens looks gorgeous! That's exactly the kind of place I'd love to run, and maybe I'd even like biking if it was there! 42 miles biking in a day--how do you do it?! And huge kudos for doing nearly 20 the next day!

    1. They rent bikes for leisurely riders too. I think that's what their trails were designed for. But thankfully, they don't mind if you cycle on the roads.

  16. Wow - what beautiful scenery! I don't know how to ride a bike (I know, I know) and when I see sights like that I would love to ride one day. Especially since you can cover so much mileage (vs. on foot!). I'm jealous of the great weather you have too - I miss warm sunny days in Ohio this time of year!
And no, uneven mileage doesn't bother me at all. Because I'm weird like that :0)

  18. Looks like a lovely place for a ride. As far as mileage, as long as it's at least .1, I'm good. I have to keep going if it's something like .13 LOL. In fact, one of the ways I hit my mileage goals each month is to always run just a little bit more than my plan. (And by little bit, I mean .1, .2, or .3)

    1. It's so much quicker to hop on the trainer and I've been doing that a lot lately as well. To cycle outdoors takes extra time. After getting dressed and geared up, I then have to cut through to woods to get to my route.

  21. What a gorgeous trail! I would have loved to have been out there with you, though I don't think I've cycled farther than 30 miles at a time!

    1. Yes, if I switch my mind over to time -- I can go for EVEN time so matter what the distance. LOL.

  25. I'm okay with even mileage if I go out to ride a specific route, if I go out for 40 miles, then it better be on the dot, or over. I want to do some more research on roads like this to ride on. I've been sticking to the same 5 mile loop, which gets real boring, real quick. But it's near my house, safe, and I know the distance which makes it easy to ride any # of miles I want.

    Thanks for hosting. :)

    1. My regular loop is about 4 (or 6 if I add a street) miles. It's near my house and I feel safe. But, it does get old -- especially when your on loop 8 or 9 or 10...

  26. What a beautiful park! and what great pictures! how did you get such great shots?

Uneven mileage doesn't bother me, until I see it all added up for the week.

    1. I use one of my water bottles to prop up my phone and set it on a timer. However, the timer is not long enough for me to turn around for a front shot. Thus, you always see my behind. UGH. LOL.

  28. I'm so glad you got some outdoor rides in, and it looks like a really beautiful ride too! Uneven mileage doesn't really bother me... sometimes if I'm really close to a mileage though, I'll add a little on (if it's just .1-.2 miles to make it an even number, but in the end I feel like all my runs should have some sort of training purpose and not necessarily a number?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Oh yes, first and foremost the training run should meet its purpose. But it doesn't hurt to add a little at the end to make it even too. It's a win win.

  29. That's a lot of miles lady and the scenery at Callaway is just beautiful! I'm sure that was extremely therapeutic :) Glad you got to visit your college boy ...I'm really missing mine right about now! 1. I've been using my indoor trainer a lot this winter. Even though I could cycle outside (and still do), it is so much quicker to just hop on the trainer when I wake up in the morning.

  32. Gorgeous scenery! And without traffic is perfect - that's one place I'd consider riding a bike outdoors. Uneven mileage used to bother me and I would run back/forth in front of my house just to get even mileage :)

I'm going to leave the double digit rides to you on my Walmart special mtn bike. Woo wee parts of me were in pain from last week when I only did just over 11 miles.
It was hard to stay inside this past weekend. I hope this weekend is a repeat too!
