Greetings from the sunny emerald coast of the Florida panhandle!

Sunday's view.

This past week was a planned low mileage week after hitting a double digit long run last week.  As soon as I found out I'd be coastal this weekend, I immediately looked for races in the area.   Eureka!  I found the Coach Post 5k/10k inside beautiful St. Andrews State Park.  My sister planned to run this race with me but, due to flight complications, sadly did not arrive on time.

Ariel view of St. Andrews

It was 54 degrees with low humidity when I arrived at St. Andrews on race morning.  No complaints there.  With only 15 minutes to spare, I quickly picked up our packets and darted back to the start line.  I decided I'd start out at half marathon pace and then speed up for the last two or three miles.  The course was flat and wound through the scenic park and at-capacity campground.  The first three miles went as planned. Nice and slow.  Unfortunately, I was never able to pick up the pace like I wanted.  By mile four, I was quickly tiring and just tried to hang on.

It was windy...as evidenced by my hair!

The best thing about this race is: I forgot to think about my foot.  Those of you who've had injuries can probably relate.  It is a big milestone to not give a second's thought to the one thing that's preoccupied your mind for months on end.   I also had no soreness afterwards which is a huge relief.  I'm calling it now...over.

Although I was slower than I wanted, it was enough for this small 10k (most people ran in the 5k).  I placed first in my age group.  I am very appreciative of the award but also know I have a lot of work ahead of me with upcoming half marathons in May and June.  There were several vendors and nice post race festivities including music, massages and delicious pasta and Italian bread from the Salt Water Grill.  Overall, I was happily impressed by the race direction.

No filter!
So, it will be back to work this week with another double digit long run and some much needed speed work.  And, maybe another run or two along the beach before heading home.

And that's a wrap!

Do you look for races when your travel?

Would you eat pasta at 9:00 in the morning?

  1. Heck, I"ll drink beer in the morning, so pasta is a no-brainer...

Sounds like a great last minute race plan. I may have to join you in the future...looks like 10ks are going to be my jam for a while!

  2. Congrats on your AG! And yahoo for no foot pain! Looks like a beautiful spot to run.

Thanks for the link-up :) Have a good week!

  3. I know exactly how it feels to forget about your foot! So glad it's over for you!

Congratulations on your age group placing. The run sounds fantastic. I've travelled for a race but not done one on the spur of the moment, either at home or on holiday, Maybe I should try a last minute entry.

  4. Congrats on your race and AG award! I know exactly what you mean about not thinking about an injury. I still think about my injuries when I run a race. Once I get a little 'zing' of pain, I panic. I hope that feeling passes soon!

  5. Ummm, why yes, I have been known to find a nearby race if I'm traveling (and, sometimes the hubby's does the work for me LOL).

  6. That's awesome that nothing was sore & that you didn't think about your foot. Generally my vacations ARE races. :) But if not, I don't usually look for a race.

  7. Oh I am jealous of your beach pictures! Congratulations on your first place AG award! That's awesome! When we went to my daughter's soccer tournament last month in Birmingham, I saw a friend of mine post about the Wine 10k up there the same weekend! I was so happy to be able to run it and meet up with a few friends I met last year and go to my daughter's games. A double blessing! Have a great week!

  8. I didn't think I'd want something like gumbo or jambalaya at 9 in the morning but I was wrong. I've see the beautiful pictures Jodi posts from St Andrews and I've wanted to go there. And you know I'll have to check out that campground too!

  9. Great job Holly! How fun that you found a race on a whim! Congrats on your age group win.

  10. Always look for a race when I am away. No brainer! Love that view. Miss it!!!!!!!!!

If I was hungry, I'd eat pasta. We had gumbo after the PCB half.

  11. How fun that you found a race on vacation. Too bad your sister was unable to make it there in time. People drink beer at 9am so why not eat Pasta? Congrats on placing first in your age group.

  16. Sounds like a lovely race! Glad to hear your foot is better :-) I can't think of a time when I wouldn't eat pasta... so, yes - 9am would be fine with me.

  17. That is always a good sign when you forget about your trouble spot- I've been feeling the same way about my shin. I think I'm finally on the other side!

I rarely sign up for a race after learning I'll be somewhere traveling through, but I do often check to see what's happening just in case I can squeeze it in. I'm impressed that you made it work!

  18. I totally get what you're saying about noticing that you didn't notice your foot - that's a true sign of recovery! I hope your sister wasn't too late getting there!

  19. I always look for a race when I travel - why not, right? Glad you found one, and nice job getting first place in you AG! Double bling is such a sweet souvenir.

  20. I don't look for races when I travel - but great idea! I should do that - it'd be a fun way to get in some miles and see the city. And congrats on your AG award!!! Woohooo!
Pasta in the morning? Why not?! I don't have anything against eating chicken, fish, etc in the a.m.

  21. I love your sense of adventure for looking for a race last minute. And I agree that sometimes races can take our attention away from injuries. Congrats on your AG win! Now, relax :)

  22. Great job on the race! I haven't gotten to the point of forgetting about my knee, but my last building run felt good and it didn't bother me at all. I'm hoping the calf strengthening I've been doing is helping me get over this once and for all.

  23. Congrats on not thinking of your foot during the race! You know I've got tons of foot drama so I get how huge this is.

  24. I would totally eat pasta at 9 am and I am sure I have before. Looks like you are in a beautiful place to get to find a race and have some fun! Looks a bit warmer than Montana right now. I would totally look for a race last minute.

  25. I love finding races where I travel. I did one once in Taiwan and placed 5th. It was funny to hear them try and pronounce my name, haha.

  26. Congratulations on your 10K and age group win! I'm glad you were able to run without thinking about your foot, I can definitely relate to that! It looks like a beautiful place to run or just hang on the beach! Enjoy your time away!

  27. The Emerald Coast is gorgeous. I love Florida! Woohoo for an AG win! I definitely look for races when I travel. It's always fun to race in new locations and see some new scenery.

  28. I bet that 10k was gorgeous! Congrats on picking up a race during travel. Too bad your sister didn't make it in time. :-(

How exciting that you foot didn't bother you during or after the race. Whoo hoo!!

  29. Congrats finding a race while on vacation and then on winning your AG! I'm so glad your foot didn't bother you - that's fantastic! When I was in Chicago for a conference last fall I didn't even think about looking for a race. While we were out on our Saturday morning run I came across a 5K finishing up and was so bummed that I hadn't run it.

    Thanks for the linkup!

  30. I am so glad the foot feels better! Too bad your sister missed the race but the weather was sketchy part of the week so that is understandable! I am looking more and more at races when I think I am going somewhere, why not? Beautiful pics! #holottafun

  31. I don't look for races when I travel - because usually, even if I found one, there isn't enough time for me to run it. A 5K maybe, but we usually get an early start to our day, so lots of things would have to come together to make it work.

And I would DEFINITELY eat pasta at 9AM. My colleagues make fun of me, but I've been known to eat dinner leftovers for breakfast. Salad for breakfast? Tacos for breakfast? Salmon for breakfast? Whatever.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I have eaten ice cream at 9am in the morning so pasta would be no problem ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  33. Congrats on the age group award! And yay for not thinking about your foot but it's too bad your sister wasn't able to make it.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I could definitely chow down on some breakfast pasta! My husband HATES pasta (who does that?!?) so I have to eat it when he's out of town!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Congrats on a great race and placing! But best of all, you didn't think about your foot which speaks volumes. Hopefully you are solidly on the road to recovery from the injury and you will have plenty of time to improve your race times as you ease more into training. It is always difficult coming back so sometimes just getting out there and pinning on a bib to race is a victory- it takes guts to do that, especially when you know you won't throw down your best time.

  36. Congrats on your first place! It's always nice running a race and forgetting about your injuries - I know that feeling!

    ReplyDelete
  37. Whoo hoo! Way to go! You are absolutely amazing and going such a great job! So proud of you!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Awesome! Congrats on your AG win! That's too bad your sister couldn't make the race though. I wouldn't mind eating pasta that early lol.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Congrats on your race and age group win!! Great to hear you didn't even think about your foot on the run! Enjoy the rest of your time there!!

  40. Oh yes I can relate! What a great feeling to run without thinking about an injury. And congrats on the placement, too!

  41. Girl, EVERYWHERE we go, I look to see if there is a race...drives the Major crazy! And yes, I'd eat pasta any time of the day. Yum! Congratulations on your A/G award but even happier that you can put your cranky foot behind you! Sorry your sister didn't make it in time to run ...she must've gotten caught up in that Atlanta airport fiasco! Enjoy the rest of your trip!
