Again, there's not much to talk about this week.  I'm just plowing through these triple digit temperature days and outrageous morning dew points as best I can.   I don't know how I trained for a marathon for the past two summers.  That almost feels like a dream now.

Mailbox Greetings!   Check out Sarah Marie's new designs!

I overslept Tuesday morning (which seems to be a recurring theme of late) and only had time to run four miles.  The dew point was slightly kinder so I was happy make these miles progressive:  10:35, 10:04, 9:36 and 8:49.  Friday morning I had extra time and planned to run eight miles.  {Bahahaha} It was so disgustingly hot and humid that I had to stop multiple times.  My sweat was sweating.  I quit at four and a half miles.  I think eventually you reach a point where you aren't doing yourself any favors by trying to slug it out.  I don't quit very often -- but I had reached that point.  And I was toast for the remainder of the day.

On the cycling front, I rode 20 miles on my bide trainer Wednesday evening and had full intentions of riding outside over the weekend.  That didn't happen.  Saturday simply got away from me as I was working/playing in the back yard and water skiing on Sunday took precedence.  Always.

Mini (off leash to herd her squirrels), Lucca and Mojo

One other thing I've been doing some nights this summer is walking the dogs after dinner.  You may remember our college kid adopted a new puppy (heavy sigh).  When he isn't working on campus, he travels home to stay a few nights with puppy Lucca in tow.  We walk all three dogs about 2 miles.  I'll miss our walks when classes start again in August. But, I won't miss the cicadas.  We have to yell to hear each other over their deafening noise.

Well, I can't let you go without a water skiing picture.  The water was 90 degrees.  90!  THE WATER.

One more... because I love the early morning light!

And that's a wrap!

How many pets do you have?

How are you handling the heat?

  1. Your water skiing pics are amazing! I agree with you on the heat and how sometimes you just have to call UNCLE. I love the heat (most of the time), but there are times when, like you said, you are not doing yourself any favors by being a hero...and you risk injury or heat stroke (or worse!).

    1. I love my great outdoors. I love being active. I'm used to being hot and sweaty. But right now -- it is simply life sucking. I look forward to October when our mornings get cool.

  2. Totally know what you mean by reaching "that point". It can be dangerous if you push yourself too hard in this weather so you definitely made the right call!

I love your water skiing photos!

  4. The heat has been brutal this summer. Marathon training has been a challenge to say the least. Walk intervals have become the norm and I can't even worry about it. Love the water skiing pic!

    1. The skiing has been fantastic this summer. I definitely can't complain about that. Yeah, our dog walks are steamy but at least I'm not running (I tell myself).

    1. What we've been having all month is our typical August weather. Which worries me. How bad is our August going to be?

  8. It's been quite humid (by our standards) here quite a lot lately. Thankfully we had a thunderstorm mid week which brought the temperature and humidity down a bit.

The three dogs are cute, we just have the one!

  9. Love those waterskiing pictures! And dang, that water temp is crazy!!!

My husband was saying that he doesn't remember summer running being so hard, and it being so hot. I don't know, maybe we just forget over the cooler months? I ended up walking with my very pregnant friend on Saturday instead of running and I have to say, it was really nice to not be soaking wet with sweat afterward. When will we have our first cold front??

    1. That's what I wonder. Have I just forgotten how it feels? At my age (ahem) is it harder for my body to tolerate it? I don't know. August is usually our worst month. Probably for you too. Oh, joy.

  10. Is it true that the insects are much worse in the South? I don't even remember the last time I heard a cicada. My evening runs or walks are pretty quiet.

    1. We didn't have much of a winter and "they" always say the bugs are worse when that happens. I don't think that applies to cicadas though, just flies and mosquitoes. Or maybe that is an old wives tale. LOL.

  11. 90 degree temps for the water ...now, that's a hot summer! But your skiing pics are always so beautiful and graceful...it's like art!

I have a 'grand dog' myself that I dog sit for regularly ...be careful, before you know it you'll be attached to it! I know I am to mine! :)

I'm getting really excited about our ride. The more I ride, the more confident that I can complete it ....I think! :) It'll make for a great story either way!!!

    1. I hate that I didn't get my long ride in this weekend! It's so much more comfortable and fun out on the road (as opposed to the painful trainer). But, my mileage was probably climbing too fast -- so I'll look on the bright side.

  13. We just adopted a dog 3-4 weeks ago! He is 8 and is a retired sled dog, so very active coming fall/winter! I love my morning walks with him - we got for about 20 minutes and it's so calm and quiet...and cool out at 6am.

  20. Oh, I lovelovelove your tank! I NEED that! My parents' dog hearts squirrels too. He's a tiny little Boston-Pug mix and they take him to the golf course and let him roam around while they play, haha.

Powering through summer running can be so difficult--I feel your pain. We southern ladies kind of get the short end of the stick in that regard!

  22. Yeah, our heat index and dew points have been insane. Dew points over 80 and triple digit heat indexes. I'm...surviving? Even the water at the ocean is hot and not really refreshing at this point. The only options are to stay indoors or be actually IN the water, not on the water (pool, ocean, river, lake, whatever - we have them all here). Good job powering through!

We have 4 dogs. I'm a crazy dog lady and I'm okay that with that.

  23. 90 degree water. OMG. I don't think I've ever been in water that hot! Does it feel any cooler while you're skiing?

I'm pretty much sure there is no way in heck I'd be training for a distance race in a southern summer. Can't even imagine.

2 dogs, 1 cat. The youngest is 9 . . . we were walking em (not Gizmo, of course) after dinner until the heat & humidity kicked in. Of course, to you, it would feel cool! But Lola just doesn't tolerate it as well any more.

    1. The water really doesn't feel 90 since the air temp is much higher. And skiing 28-30 mph cools you off pretty quick anyway. My Mojo is ready to come home long before the other two. It may be the noisy cicadas though.

      Delete
  24. HaHa, I love your quote, "My sweat was sweating." I won't make you any more jealous by continuing to dwell on how delightfully cool the temperatures were in the mountains of Southwest Virginia last weekend. I'm back home now and facing our usual hazy, hot, and humid weather...

  25. 90 water temp seems really warm... is that the norm for summer? I have 2 dogs, one doesnt' seem to mind the heat of the summer... the other, well... let's just say it's a challenge to get her to go outside at all from May-September.

    1. Yes, that is normal for the peak of summer. And, I have seen it higher than that. My Mojo is ready to head home long before the other two dogs.

  26. We are having weird weather this summer so far...it's hot for sure, but not as hot as it normally gets. Normally we'd see weather in the 90s during the day but it's stuck in the 80s lately. All the summer storms are making it more humid but less hot if that makes sense! I don't know this is my first summer training for something so I think I'm doing ok!

    1. I figured you were having really hot days too! I get the more humid, less hot thing. That excessive humidity is worse than the heat, in my opinion.

  27. We had a heat index over 100 degrees a couple of days last week, but at least we never officially crossed that boundary. 90-degree water too? Wow! Running has been going well, thankfully my knee has felt much better with the shorter distances. We have 2 kittens that keep us busy!

  28. 90 degree water temp. Wow! The water is still cold up North!!

We have had a lot of rain and that means humidity. Sometimes, I wonder if I walk more than I run in my runs.

  29. We have one dog, a Border Collie, and taking him for walks along with the two kids feels like a handful sometimes! I can't imagine having three dogs but yours are SO adorable! Our dog is very well mannered but he has a tendency to step on his own leash or get wrapped up with the kids' bikes. Ha. Keeps things interesting!

  33. Water skiing looks like so much fun! I have never been but would love to be on a boat at some point this summer. We don't have any pets but I think after dinner is the time to walk dogs because it is a bit cooler in the evenings for them. It has to be difficult for most dog owners here to even find a time because of the heat.

  35. Our weather is all over the place. Hot. Cold. Rain. Humidity. Hot. Mild. Rain then Sun. It's annoying, but normal. So very Dutch!!

We have 4 cats (and a couple of fish). I only wanted two and then the husband begged and pleaded for a British Short Hair. Just one, he said. Then my oldest cat died (RIP Frankie, the best cat ever) and we got another BSH. Then one of our neighbours died suddenly, leaving behind 4 cats. We felt so sorry for the two that couldn't be re-homed that we took one (and one of the sisters of the neighbour took the last one). So now we have FOUR. Nightmare. I'm constantly vacuuming!! Hubby has to do the cat boxes though bwhahahaha!
