Coffee Talk (August)

Thank you, Wendy!

Welcome to Coffee Talk!

We've ushered in a new month and it's time for our monthly coffee date.  I'm excited to say I'm having an actual coffee date with one of our own.  Wendy from Taking The Long Way Home is visiting and we are sipping and swinging on my back porch.

I haven't had the chance to thank her for my We Are Here Starbucks mug.  After finding out I did not get a Wisconsin mug at the airport after we ran the Door County half marathon, she sweetly had one sent to me.   I will always think of our weekend adventures when I use it.

Over Coffee...

I'd admit I'm looking forward to getting my running mileage up and training for my next half marathon.  While the lower mileage and summer break was intentional -- and quite honestly it's been so hot and humid here that the running hasn't been the most enjoyable experience -- I do miss training.  Now that it is August, we should start having cooler mornings within 6 weeks or so.  It's something to look forward to.

Over Coffee...

Although my running mileage has been low, my cycling mileage is increasing nicely in preparation for a fall Century Ride.   I'm confident I can go the distance, but the time it requires is mind boggling.  First of all, I'm not a fast rider.  By the time you stop at a few (OK, all) rest stops, it will be an all day event.  It will be nice to have Teresa @ Finding Fabulous at Fifty pedaling beside me. We played around with the idea of only doing a Metric Century Ride but both realized it would be more satisfying to do the full 100+ miles.  Ha Ha -- someone as nutty as me!

There's a little girl...in my neighborhood...

Over Coffee...

If you are reading this Saturday morning, weather permitting Wendy and I are running a very steamy 5k.  The name should be a clue -- Shake and Bake.  I have run this race before and even placed in my age group.  I love the fact they give out gift certificates to the farmer's market located on the quaint town square where the race is held.  I don't think it will be me, but maybe my cohort will bring home the bacon (and squash and zucchini and tomatoes and peaches and honey and...).

Over Coffee...

I'd admit how disappointed I was with our weather when Wendy arrived Thursday.  After all, the plan was to water ski...and then water ski some more.  Sadly we didn't make it to the lake Thursday afternoon, but made up for it in the wee morning hours of Friday.  Don't we look as if we came straight from the Cypress Gardens Ski Show?  All we need are the retro flowered bathing caps.

Over Coffee...

Yes, finally!  School starts next Thursday.  (What the what?  Who decides it should be a Thursday?)  Routine.  Normalcy.  Last child.  Senior year.  The official empty nest countdown has begun.

What would you tell me over coffee?

  1. Next Thursday already for school? Where did the summer go? I don't think August will bring any cooler mornings yet here in Virginia. I'll have to wait until September.

    1. It's hard to believe school is starting! It will be Christmas before we knot it.

  2. Can't believe school starts already. Not until after labor Day here. Have fun water skiing with Wendy and on the 5k. So jealous. I bet you both win awards.

    1. When I was young, we went back to school after Labor Day. I miss that schedule.

  3. Thursday seems a bit odd, but local schools start either the 16th or 17th, depending on the district. My coworkers who do have kids are also looking forward to normal schedules again. The university doesn't start until the 28th.

    1. I think I can go that distance...at least I hope I can. I honestly don't want to spend the excessive time I should to train for it...just enough to complete it. LOL.

  6. Well, we'd have a lot to chat about! Most schools here don't start here until after Labor Day so we've got another month of summer vacation -- and lighter traffic. We are planning on a Century in October but just signed up for a Metric in a few weeks because ... why not? I do need to get back to long runs somehow because I've got two 10 milers lined up. I'm sure you are having a blast with Wendy - water-skiing, racing, coffee and I'm sure much, much more.

    1. There is an opportunity for a metric prior to the century...but it would require a little travel (the century is local for me). It's something to think about. I've enjoyed the summer vacation traffic!

  8. That is the best photo of you and Wendy I love it! Hope you all are enjoying your weekend together. I have also intentionally cut my mileage this summer and I am also ready to be back. Thanks for joining the coffee date!

    1. The skiing was a blast. The runs are feeling really tough for me so adding mileage will definitely not be easy in our worst month for heat.

  9. Wow - back to school on Thursday already?! I live in Canada so our school year calendar is a bit different (probably to match the weather). It is tradition for school to start the first Tuesday of September. There's a strong US influence in our retail stores so the back to school sales started a week after school ended. LOL! I love the picture of you and Wendy on your swing, it looks so cosy and comfortable. Good luck in today's 5k race!

    1. It crazy how far ahead the retail stores push the seasons! I like the idea of starting school in September. It's what we did when I was a young girl.

  10. I'm sure you enjoyed the 5k & the water skiing! Such fun.

I'm sure to you it would feel cool, but damn it was humid here this morning.

  12. I"m with you on the school starting too early and on odd days! My high school junior actually starts next Friday and only goes a half day at that ... just plain odd.

The century ride will definitely be a 'bear of a day' but I'm confident we can pass the time as all good southern gals do ...chatting and 'blessing everyone's hearts"!! :)

Have fun with Wendy this weekend! Can't wait to hear about the race .....I'm betting you both won something!

  14. Our last child goes back to school August 24th (also a Thursday) for her senior year. What the WHAT??? I think I'm too "young" to be an empty-nester. It looks like you and Wendy are having some quality "sister" time ;-)

    1. We ARE way too young to be empty nesters! It will be an adjustment, for sure.

  16. Great job on your cycling mileage! I recently got a bike and have been meaning to get out and ride more--fingers crossed that my schedule cooperates with that plan!

Sorry to hear about the weather! :[ I've never been water skiing but I'm glad you got to go on Friday!
