And So It Begins (WW # 109)

I hope everyone is enjoying their Labor Day weekend!  It's pretty chaotic around here with 4 adults, a pack of teens, two grandkids and 5 dogs (what the what?) so I'll keep this short.

This week marked my start of regular running and training for fall races.   I've been active all summer with loads of cross training but I kept my running mileage low. After training the past two summers for marathons, I decided to take an off season this year.  Now it's time to get back to business.
My first official training run felt great!


I admit, it will take a bit of restraint to build slowly and not jump in and start running 20-25 miles a week.  I kept it to 3 runs for a total of 14 miles. I even ran one evening after work which is so out of character for me.  It was breezy which made the feels-like 92 not seem so bad.


Hot, but better than expected!

I decided not to cycle this week in an effort not to overdo. My achy leg is so much improved and I want to keep it that way.  There were two strength training sessions and one trip to the lake for about 35 miles of water skiing

The water is cooling off very fast!

We had a visitor on the boat today.

  1. Wow 5 dogs! Now that's a party! Because I'm right at peak mileage right now for Berlin, I'm running 35. Not much to many but plenty for me. All the best with the new training cycle!

    1. Our two dogs, college kid dog, girlfriend dog and her weekend foster dog. It WAS a party! That would be plenty of miles for me too!

  2. 35 miles sounds like a lot of water skiing! I've added some more running but need to be careful about doing too much.

  3. Nice start to your training!
    I'm a very low mileage runner so I keep it between 20-25 usually. Labor day, I'll be running of course! The Pittsburgh Steelers always host a 5k so I'll be pacing that race. Hope you have a wonderful Labor day!

    1. Our local running club stopped having their Labor Day 8k. Today's weather would have been perfect for it too.

  4. Well, I'm averaging mileage in the high-20's, but it's walking mileage so it takes almost twice as long LOL

  5. I'm working tomorrow - it is Labor Day after all! ;-) Let's pretend that I didn't just take two weeks off to go to the beach and I'm taking this coming Friday off as well...

  7. Beautiful butterfly! You look really strong.

    I'm in the low 20s -- supposed to be a bit higher but I've been feeling eprin down off & on the last month & am just trying to get to the starting line healthy!

    Hopefully tomorrow I'm trading an easy run for a hike.

  10. I was averaging 45-50 mpw but am in the process of (gasp) cutting back! Now that I am adding some races into the equation, I just can't run that high of mileage. Plus, I was feeling a bit niggly and achy, and I wasn't recovering well from runs. So, I'm going to cut back to 40ish for probably the rest of 2017 and see how that goes. I love that you went water skiing and it looks like so much fun.

    1. For me (at my age -- cough, sputter), higher mileage run on a consistent basis would cause nothing but problems. Everyone is different and has their own sweet spot.

    1. The 35 miles was broken into two 30-35 minute "runs". When the lake is quiet and calm, it is much easier than when it is choppy.

  18. Good luck with your training cycle! Mine officially starts next week. This week, I'm prepping for Hurricane Irma, which hopefully will be a non-event, but since I live on the East Coast, it's better to be prepared.

  19. I've been doing between 4 and 6-ish miles each week during the summer, and training has started. My runs have started out low, so the first week of training was 6 miles for running, but now I start building during this second week.

  20. I typically run 20-25 miles per week on a good week when I'm not training for anything. Now that I'm recovering from piriformis issues, I'm slowly getting back out there. Have a great Labor Day!

  21. So smart to start slowly! I remember thinking weekly runs in the teens was such piddly mileage when I started doing it, but that low mileage helped me get out of my running slump, into a more rigorous routine, and into higher mileage. I think those first low-mileage weeks are so important!

    1. I've certainly learned that the correct weekly mileage definitely varies from person to person. What works well for some, just doesn't for others!

  22. THe adults and kids... meh... 5 dogs!!! You crazy! I was running about 35-40 miles before stopping for my IUI. I just love the miles! Here's to your next training cycle!

  24. Your training is off to a great start! I didn't realize you had an achy leg situation, hope you're feeling better! I've been in the 20ish range for half marathon training, running 4 days a week and it seems to be a good balance right now!

  25. For the holiday weekend, we spent a day on the boat crabbing! We shared a fresh crab dinner with family two nights in a row. Good luck with your new training cycle! I'm in the final week of an 18 week plan, with my first 50k on Saturday!

  28. Sounds like you've got a full house! What a great start to your training cycle. I have a problem with attempting to jump into too much mileage too fast, so I'm slowly adding miles this fall - I'm currently between 10 and 15 miles per week (excluding the half marathon from this weekend) and looking to build slowly this fall since I've only got shorter races on the calendar.

  29. I've been averaging, um, pretty close to zero miles. It's smoky out and I have no tolerance for being in the smoke. But now that school has started I have treadmill access so I can't use outside conditions as an excuse...
