Ode to Sanity (WW # 166)

Three years ago this month
I hopped upon your seat.
You'd be my distraction;
That fractured foot I'd beat!

It seemed so silly to name you
I think I was quite mad.
DNS 'ing the Chicago marathon
Had made me very sad!

Shiny, narrow, white
Now, what do I do?
My clunky yellow mountain bike
Was simply K-Mart poo.

With a different type of shifting
And hills and hills to ride,
You taught me how to handle gears
Actually, with quite the pride.

You've gotten me through triathlons
On podiums twice I've stood.
Fast cycling helped my swimming
Which, honestly, was not good.

We completed two long century rides
In summer's brutal heat.
Obnoxious singing, torrential rain
You didn't miss a beat!

I've watched countless TV shows
While spinning on your trainer.
You provided awesome cardio
For marathon training -- no brainer.

I've dressed you with disco lights,
Red handle tape as well
Aero bars, a bike computer;
More than Garmin can ever tell.

At the time you seemed expensive
Would you be worth that dough?
Nearing three thousand miles now
I think you've proven so.

Sometimes I do ignore you
When running is my main thing.
But I will always appreciate
The Sanity that you bring.

I didn't have much of a wrap post this week so I appreciate you humoring me and my silly poetry.  Please note all rhyming credit belongs to Dr. Seuss!

Tell me about your week!   Any races?

Are you enjoying Fall? (It is still Summer here.)

    1. That we have. Two foot fractures plus other run-halting sprains, etc. I really enjoy riding though, especially in scenic places.

  2. Ahhhhh, this is just what I needed to hear (and read) on this gloomy fall day ;-)

At least you have a bike
    with fond memories to share...
my bike, however, sat dormant this summer
and I honestly did not care.

    You (again) inspire me
with all of your fitness fun.
Maybe someday I'll get that urge
to LOVE biking under the sun.

    1. Oh dear Kimberly
I can always count on you
      To respond to my poetry
With words that ring so true

      You should come and cycle
      With Sanity and me
      We'd sing, laugh, and talk
      While pedaling with such glee

    2. 5 Stars for the best poetry conversation Holly and Kimberley! Lovely ode to your bike. My husband is on injury time-out from running so he is definitely finding sanity in his bike!

    3. The bike is such a great way to recover from a running injury while maintaining fitness!

  3. I do love my bike! I've never named it but it has always been there for me. Best backup plan ever!

    1. I usually don't name anything! This was the one time I did. That little piece of machinery got me through one of the roughest/saddest running patches I'd ever experienced at the time.

  4. This was really creative! I don't have a bike, but imagine that if I did, I would have a similar poem.

    1. Oh thank. It was just a silly remembrance of how I got my road bike. She has been a lot of fun to ride.

  6. It's great that you found such a good supplement to running! It still feels like summer here most days but I'm sure its not as hot as it is for you. Where is fall?

    1. It's my favorite cross training activity. But, I really enjoy just riding for fun too.

  7. I'm glad your bike has provided some great moments. Biking isn't something I do, except on the stationary bike. Drivers are so crazy here!

    1. I'm pretty fortunate not to have to deal with much traffic where I ride. But, it's a rare and special treat to ride on bike trails with absolutely no traffic!

  8. This is so great! I only really biked when I was injured this summer - it really is a good sub for running!

    1. It really is excellent cardio for either cross training or for subbing out when injured.

  9. Awww...I love your ode to your bike! I wish I wasn't afraid to ride on the streets with cars. I could see me feeling the same way. :)

    1. I am fortunate to have an adjoining neighborhood with super wide streets and very little traffic. It's where all of my usual rides occur.

  10. Your poetry is not at all silly & I love it & wish I had that talent. It's always nice to have something to keep the insanity in check. :)

    1. I only wish I had a nice rails-to-trails close by. The closest one is about a two hours (or maybe more) drive! I'd love to take Sanity there sometime.

  11. Love the poetry! I love my bike too, but it is a mountain bike (not Kmart poo, though)! :)

    1. I had that K-Mart Poo (named Bertha) for a long, long time. She was my prize for passing a professional exam years ago. I think I paid $100 for her! She came in handy over the years but I had no idea what a "real" road bike was like.

  12. I always love your poems! You’re so creative. I love that you love your bike too. Cycling is more fun when the humidity hangs around.

    1. I admit, it's been so hot lately that I don't even feel like riding a bike. Doing anything outside the last few weeks has felt simply tedious!

  13. I love this! Especially K-mart Poo. Lol! I have zero talent for poetry. Please continue to share more of this!

    1. I was so proud of that K-Mart Poo -- bought nearly 20 years ago. I had a lot of fun relearning how to ride a bike back then. But, the road bike felt so awesome after riding that old mountain bike. LOL.

  14. Nice tribute!
I was about two hours north of New York City this weekend. This morning was humid, by afternoon I needed a light jacket. When I got off the train at Penn? Hi, summer. Shoo!

    1. Well, it was more or less forced on my due to injury. But, I really enjoyed learning to ride a road bike. She was so much faster than my mountain bike!

    1. I can't imagine riding on gravel roads. Obviously, I'd have to get another bike for that. Sanity would be so jealous!

  19. While I absolutely love the poem, the rain picture had my heart racing all over again! But it was an exciting ride and I wouldn't have wanted to share it with anyone else! Though I won't make it this year, I do see another ride with Lexi and Sanity in our future! xoxo
