Weekend Struggle

The weekend started great.  This little bling arrived in the mailbox.  I can now wear my Fitbit all dressed up.  I found this charm for only $13.89 on Amazon.  I also wear it with the colored bands for a casual look.

Saturday was spent riding and skiing at the lake.  We are still breaking in the boat's new engine, which requires that I ski at varying speeds (normal is 30 mph).  It's tough on my body to go any faster or slower than normal, especially my hands.  In hindsight, 3 long runs may have been too much.  We stopped at our favorite oyster bar on the way home appropriately named Aw Shucks.  Naturally, a couple of refreshing margaritas were consumed.

I planned to run 12-13 miles early Sunday morning.  Because of the too-much-fun day on Saturday, I didn't wake as early as planned.  It was 6:45 by the time I hit the pavement.  It was already over 80 degrees with humidity well into the 90s.  There was not one whisper of a breeze.  Not.A.Puff.  I believe this was my worst run ever.  EVER.  I struggled.  My whole body felt like lead in addition to the fact I could not find the air!

Talk about a Humbling Experience.  I shuffled through 9 miles.  It was not pretty and I had to walk a lot.  My Fitbit recorded a total of 11.5 miles including the walking breaks.  It definitely leaves me questioning my sanity in choosing to train for a fall marathon in these conditions.  If I struggle to pound out 9 miles, how will I run 15 or 20 or 25?

I took the plunge when I got home (again).  I even jumped in with my running shoes on.  My sweat was already squishing out of their sides and I figured the chlorine would help the ensuing smell.   It was too hot to do anything but stay in the water, so that's what I did most all day.   We even got our dogs to float for a while. The grandkids and granddog came later so we had our normal wild and chaotic afternoon in the pool.

Is anyone else struggling with their long run?

  1. I've been struggling with running, period. This time of year is tough for me. Waterskiiing, so fun! I haven't done that in forever!

    1. I made it extra hard on myself by waiting so late. Live and learn. Waterskiing is a dying sport, for sure!

  2. I've had plenty of those runs, but this summer has been so cool that it's been nice for running. No complaints...

    1. Oh, I'm jealous of your mild summer. I can't even fathom what that must be like. So hot for so long already.

  3. Oh wow I love the fitbit charm! I was thinking this weekend when I dressed up I should take my fitbit off but nah I didn't (miss steps, I don't think so!) What a great idea, I sure wish I had thought of it.... I so can relate to the struggle to run even at 6am! I'm not ready to publicly let the cat out of the bag just yet but I'm also questioning how I'm gonna get through this if I take the plunge on the decision I have at hand ;)

    1. Oh, no...can't take them off! I can't believe this charm was so inexpensive! Some of it is NOT. It's really nice too. If you take that plunge, it will be cooler by then. That's why I'm looking forward to it.

  4. I had a tough run on Sunday as well, and it was only a 5k! I did pass by an apartment building with a pool on my run and I was so tempted to just jump in. Thankfully I held myself back since I'm sure they would be wondering who the crazy lady in running clothes jumping into their pool was.

    1. It would take a lot of restraint not to jump in! Our heat index has been over 105 for a week. And this week is more of the same.

  5. Hopefully it will be much cooler in the fall. That's what I keep telling myself. Actually we've been lucky & had a fairly cool summer so far.

How I envy you your pool!

    1. I envy your cool summer! I can't imagine. It's been so hot for so long, I don't know what cool feels like anymore.

  6. I love that your dogs got to join in the pool fun! Every bad mile now will pay off in the fall! Plus, it's good to get the bad runs out in training so it will be smooth--and cool!--sailing for your fall race.

    1. They don't like the water. Just after this picture was taken, they both bailed off the float to swim out. And popped holes in my favorite float. LOL I guess it's their way of saying "take that". I hope I get smooth and cool sailing on race day!

  7. I have seen those fit bit covers and thought they were a great idea. We spent most of the day yesterday in the pool with the dogs. My labrador could lay on the raft all day long!

  8. I SHOULD have been up much earlier, but the day before had really taken a toll. I'm not going to make that mistake this weekend. I had been feeling so much better about my runs and then I go and do that. I am less than 90 days from the marathon. I've got to get it in gear.

  9. I am loving that charm! How cool is that! Note to self :) which fitbit style do you have BTW? I know this heat and humidity may kill us all! Holy Moly, the 8K I squeeked out was stifling! Even if I am out for 20 minutes- I am a sweaty train wreck! Thank goodness for the swimming pools!

    1. I have a Charge HR. It's a little wider than some of the other models. At 3/4 miles Sunday and new I was in for a rocky run. The air has just got to move a little bit!

    1. My dogs actually do not like the water AT ALL. After this picture was taken, they bailed and popped holes in my favorite float. I wish I had thought up the Fitbit charms.

  11. "Is anyone else struggling with their long runs?" I'm struggling with my SHORT runs!!! I ran 4 miles yesterday (in a "feels like" temp of 101) and I'm pretty sure I died a little bit.

    1. I'm kicking myself for waiting so late (6:45). I can't imagine it was much cooler at 5 a.m. You nailed it...I died a little bit too!

  12. I have been having some serious doubts about training for a marathon in the summer months...especially being my first (I'm new to you and am not sure if this is your first). But, I've committed, so I keep telling myself I have to do it. I'll be honest...It's good to know I'm not alone.

    1. Yes, it's my first too!! I'm committed as well. You are definitely not alone. We'll do this one sweaty step at a time!

  13. I would love to do the Disneyland half, but it's right on Labor Day weekend, and I just can't bring myself to do high mileage when it's so hot out.

    1. I would think the training AND the race would be hot. I wonder why they hold that race on Labor Day weekend?

  14. My long runs have been tough lately as well! Part of the reason is I am still building up after some time off, but also the heat and humidity is a killer! Makes running feel a million times harder!

  15. Love that you are accessorizing your Fitbit! The humidity is making my long runs harder but we both know that it will make us stronger for the fall! A jump in the pools sounds so great after a hot sweaty run!

  16. The Fitbit charms are cute! Love those accessories. So nice you had a pool to jump into after the run. Hopefully last week was just a tough run with the temperatures. Hoping this week is much better for you.
