Coffee Talk (August)

One teen recently visited the Space Center
It's Saturday morning.  Let's settle in, have coffee and chat for a while!

Over Coffee...

I'd tell you how my teens will be back in school in less than two weeks.  Yes, mid August -- that just doesn't seem right.  In fact, they begin on a Thursday.  Who does that?  Most Moms probably like it when school starts each year.  Not me.  I lose my servants precious willing helpers.  No more sending texts of chores to complete while they are lounging at home.

I always dread the first night of school too.  All that paperwork you have to fill out...again.  It's the same info year after year.  Why isn't this information stored in the school's computer?

Over Coffee...

You'd hear how my iPod Shuffle has become unreliable.  I think it's the 3rd one I've worn out.  I'm not complaining. With the wear, tear and sweat I put those things through it's hard to believe they last as long as they do.  But it forces me to run with my phone for music.  This week, I experimented with a running belt to hold my phone.  Also, I need extra space for carrying items on long training runs or in races and had wanted to try a belt.

I wore the Go Belt made by Hippie Runner.  It is adjustable and buckles like a SpiBelt.  The belt is lightweight and comes in fun colors and prints.  It has two expandable zipper pockets and outside loops for gels, etc.  The largest phone will easily fit.  Unfortunately, I have hips...and they aren't narrow.  The belt will not stay on my not-narrow hips.  I tried it under my shirt, I tried it over my shirt.  I will say it was better on the day I wore a shirt with texture, where the material wasn't as slick.  But you end up constantly adjusting it.  I'm wondering, does anybody use one with success?  Or maybe after I while, you get used to it?

Over Coffee...

I'd tell you how I heard the best quote this week, one I intend to remember and use.  I had stopped in Walmart (I know!) and was checking out at the Garden Center.  The cashier was returning from the greenhouse and said "Lawdy, it's so hot out there even my eyelids is a sweatin'.  Amen, Sista. I couldn't have said it better.

What would you tell me over coffee?

  1. I run with my phone and have it in a belt. Sometimes that's all that I take with me.

    1. I usually don't take anything but my shuffle if I'm just running in the neighborhood. The phone feels so heavy. I do take it when I'm in large races or outside my neighborhood.

  2. I use a shuffle for music too (and I, too, am on my 3rd one! haha), but sometimes I want to take my phone too. I always take it with me when I'm walking (to use the Walk for a Dog app) but sometimes I want to use it when I'm running too, like if I'm running somewhere I want to take a camera or if my watch battery is dead. Before, I've put it in a ziplock baggie in my SPIbelt, but that's a pain, so I recently bought one of those arm band thingies to put it in. I thought it would bug me, but it really doesn't. Although it did chafe the underside of my arm the first time I worse it. I was afraid of having it too tight, and I left it too loose so it moved around every time my arm did and left a nice chafe mark.

School here starts on Friday. Crazy. Not that i have a monkey in that circus or anything. lol

    1. I have not tried the arm band, although I won one and it's around here somewhere. I guess I should try that next. I wore the belt today on my long run and it seemed better. I forgot I had it on, which is always good.

  3. Lordy, my eyelids are sweating too! Long run done for the weekend and now I can move on! I do not miss any of the back to school paperwork, I am with you- isn't stored somewhere so you can click the same as last year box! ugg! I use my fitbelt and I love it! Enjoy your weekend!

    1. I used my belt on my long run today (16 miles) and forgot I had it on. Maybe I had to get over the fact it wasn't going to stay exactly where I hoped. Or, it could be because I had on my CamelBak and was more aware of it's presence.

  4. LOL on the eyelid sweat. I always notice sweat dripping off my elbow first .... Virginia schools don't start until after Labor Day but my son goes back to college the 31st. The doctors do the same thing to you with the paperwork. I get sick of filling it out when nothing changes.

    1. I think I notice my face sweating first, followed by everything else. You are right about doctors. It takes so much time to fill out all those sheets!

  5. I can't believe it is back to school... we still have 4 weeks here. But I did stock up on school supplies today, yikes. That makes it real. I am going to have two high schoolers in the house. Where has the time gone....

    1. I'm so glad both of mine are at the same high school. It makes life much easier. I wait until they start school to get supplies now. I can't tell you how many times I've bought supplies as instructed on a list and then they not be correct. That's aggravating.

  6. Over coffee we'd talk about Disney! lol In fact I think we're going to have to meet up just to do that....Talk Disney, before Disney! I've been running with a RooSport pack. It holds my mini computer (aka phone) and some gels and gum. I do like it! I'm working on a review and also have one to give away, soon as I figure out how to do that on the blog, lol! Hope you have a nice cool run in the morning! I'll check on ya! :)

    1. I have the original RooSport I've used a few times. The magnet is so strong on that thing, it's hard to get into sometimes. I love the idea of making a pocket when you need one. Maybe there is a half we can do before Disney. It needs to cool off a little first.

  7. I use a SpiBelt for my phone. That is the only belt that stays in place. I tried that HiP ZiPP this week..I love all the room it has but it kept sliding up. I don't have hips. I thought maybe I needed hips to keep it in place. I don't know what to say!

    1. I used it again on my long run today and forgot I had it on. I was wearing a different pair of shorts which weren't too slippery. The back of the belt ended up at the waist and the front stayed lower. I was OK with that.

  8. Wow you all go back to school early! My son won't start until after labor day! Thanks for joining us for the coffee date!

    1. You would think they would want to wait until it cools off a little instead of starting right in the middle of the hottest month.

  9. My close friend's kids go back to school 8/13! That is so nuts! It's still summer, let em play! LOL. Or, let em clean the house ;)

  10. OMG, the eyelids are sweating! That's hilarious. My younger son said a funny thing, too. In line for a roller coaster in the sun he just blurted out - It's so hot my underwear are sweating. Haha - that's our new saying now. And I TOTALLY hear you on all that paperwork crap. Seriously! Just move it online and ask us to validate or make edits if needed. Or print out the existing info if you don't want to spend the money for web based services.

    1. That is so funny - underwear sweats. It's so true too! I spend hours filling out all these forms that don't apply. And the ones that do apply, you already have the information recorded somewhere.

  11. It's so weird when schools start mid-week! That's how it always started when I was in school too. The eyelash quote lol that's great! It's been super hot here too with extra humidity from some recent storms. But fall doesn't seem too far away at least:)

    1. We had a few lower humidity days last week. It does give you a little glimmer of hope.

  12. I can't keep any type of belt down around my hips. I think it's because I have generous hips and a small waist - things just want to move up.

My eyelids have definitely been sweating around here this summer. Ugh.

    1. If I could get it tight enough to fit my waist, I think it would be OK. It doesn't get that small since it's made for hips!

  13. That IS a great quote! Nothing fits on my hips let alone stays on. I have to wear my water belt high up on my waist to get it to stay, and that just looks silly. That's why I just carry a bottle now.

    1. I just need to buy a new shuffle and then I won't need a belt. LOL. I admit if felt much better today. I was wearing my CamelBak and I think I was more aware of the weight of that than I was worrying about the belt.

  14. A three day weekend for the whole summer would be awesome! The belt was better today, so maybe I just needed to get used to it. I still have an iPhone 5 too. That is a nice one you have in the link. On sale too.

  15. I use a flipbelt to carry stuff when I'm running and I don't usually need to adjust it. I carry my phone, and my inhaler on every run so I always have the belt. I feel like it took a little fiddling around at first to find the exact right place on my hips to put it, but as long as I get it in the right place it doesn't bounce and doesn't need adjusting.

    1. I gave one of these to my oldest son. He loves running with his. I haven't tried one. I typically don't like to carry anything, just a few GU during a race. But sometimes, you have to.

  16. I am obsessed with my Flipbelt for carrying things on my run. It doesn't move at all and it fits everything I need. I use my phone to listen to music because I can do it free, so I haven't used an iPod in ages!

    1. My phone feels so much heavier. You can't tell you have a shuffle clipped on. I guess I would eventually get used to the weight, but it's harder to change songs too. My son loves his Flipbelt!
