My Fitbit Story

Dressy Fitbit

Earlier this year, I wanted a Fitbit.  We were headed to Disney and I thought it would be so cool to count my steps as we walked around the parks.  Every time I mentioned this, I would hear comments like "Why in the world do you want that -- you have a Garmin?" or "You run, you know you get enough steps" or "My friend has one and it's counts all these extra steps" and yada yada.

After all the negative comments, I talked myself out of getting one.

Casual Fitbit

Fast forward to Mother's Day...

I found a pink Fitbit nestled in the bottom of a gift bag.  PoPo had paid attention.  I think he likes to buy me electronic gadgets anyway.  It's his go-to thing; something he can relate to and buy easily.   One size fits all!

I decided I would definitely wear a Fitbit but wanted the one with the heart rate monitor.  I swapped it for a Charge HR model with PoPo's blessing.

A 21 mile run earned me this!

As you may know, I'm a poor sleeper.  The females in my family have always struggled.  However, I began sleeping a little better once I got a Fitbit.  Let me see if I can explain...it somehow validated that fact that YES, I CAN SLEEP -- at least some.   And that helped me sleep better.  I know, it sounds weird even to me.

The stats you get are amazing.  The phone app gives you plenty of data, but if you log into your computer you'll get worlds of info.  If I went into all of the features, this post would become the owners manual.  One of the coolest things it does is vibrate when I get a phone call and displays the name of the caller.  Sweet!

I have my Fitbit screen set to show my heart rate when I tap on it.  I love this feature when I run.  I can't wear the chest strap that came with my Garmin!  But with a simple tap on my Fitbit, I can easily see my heart rate.

In comparison to my GPS watch (yes, I run wearing both), I've found if I run slowly or take short steps it is pretty accurate with mileage.  If I am racing or running a faster pace, the Fitbit's mileage is often short.  Of course, there are the fun challenges you can do with your friends.  You also earn badges as you reach certain milestones.  That's a nice touch.

Do you wear a fitness tracker?

If you have a Fitbit, I'd like to be your friend!

  1. Cannot believe how far Fitbits have come since I got my plain Jane one that clips on my bra. Hey I got it free during a gig with Verizon so I can't complain. Actually I still have Marilyn's fitbit....sigh.
That's so great you can tap and get HR with no chest strap. Love that!

    1. You can't complain about free. The HR feature is excellent. It seems accurate as well.

  2. I love my fitbit! I even love it after I wore it in the sauna on a spa day and it kinda put a bubble in the band! I so need to dress my fitbit up with one of those clips! It's so pretty! How come we didn't have a challenge this week?

    1. I need another Fitbit charm. I keep forgetting to Add To Cart! Why didn't we have a challenge this week? I think I just forgot because of old crazy Monday!

    1. You get so much information, I don't think you would be disappointed. I hear their customer service is top notch if you have a problem.

  5. I miss being in these competitions, I would have loved to cheer your 40,000 step day, WOOT WOOT Okay, I just did it now:)
I too also have a Garmin and Fitbit and while I use my Garmin mostly for running, I do take the Fitbit everywhere, like you if I run at a certain pace I find it fairly right on wih the Garmin, but ya if you go faster with a longer stride, I found mine to be off just a little in longer distances.
I love it though, its so much fun and really is motivation. My sisters and I get crazy with competition with each other, but that's a good thing:)

    1. Thanks for the Woot Woot! My next badge will be 45,000 I guess, maybe this weekend. Surely I'll hit 50,000 in the marathon. I enjoy the challenges where the participants really "cheer" each other on. It's more fun that way. I've missed you being in those challenges!

  8. That's great that it tracks your keep. I don't think I get enough sleep. I'm sure most people can relate. That's cool that you get an a for it on your phone.

    1. It counts how many times you were restless or awake and then also reports how many minutes were spent that way. It is so cool! And getting the phone call is so tech-y.

  9. I like your fitbit charm. I was going to get my friend that same one for her birthday but at the last minute decided on a different one! I really have no need for a fitbit but I kind of want to get one just for all the fancy charms I can put on it!

    1. With a charm on it, it really just looks like a pretty bracelet. You can also put multiple charms for extra bling if you want.

  11. I am really amazed at all the stats you can get. Fitbit has come a long way in a short time. My husband still uses one but I have my 2000 other gadgets and gizmos!

    1. Yeah, you can really get overloaded with the gadgets. Thankfully, this syncs without effort with your phone.

  12. During the summer I usually sleep quite well, but I do really struggle with it in the winter. I am solar powered, obviously!

I can't say that the sleep tracking on my vivoactive helps me to sleep any better, either - but it sure is cool to look at it & say no wonder I'm tired -- I'm not getting any deep sleep!.

    1. I haven't thought of sleep issues being seasonal, but you are probably right. I'm the opposite. I think I've only slept 4 or 5 hours, but check my stats and see it was 6. I feel better about it and less tired.

  13. I love my Fitbit but I think I want to upgrade- you are really happy with it? The charging part drives me crazy i will admit but I so love all those numbers!

    1. I really like my Charge HR. I usually have to charge it twice a week, but it doesn't seem to take very long. I think you would be happy with the upgrade.

  14. I have never even heard of a Basis Peak. The sleep and HR information are my two favorite features. If you decide to take the plunge, we should be Fitbit friends.

  15. I've noticed my FitBit mileage is shorter on runs than walks too - good to know I'm not nuts!

    1. Nope, not nuts. Just this morning I ran 6 miles (per Garmin) at a medium pace. Fitbit recorded 5.8 which is pretty close. If I had run at a slower pace, it would have been even closer.

  16. Lovely story indeed. You have pointed out all major facts of this device. Recently I took a Fitbit Charge HR. But I started using it without setting up. Now I need to Reset Fitbit Charge HR to start using from the begining. Can you Please advise me?
