Coffee Talk (November)

I realized I don't have a fall mug!

Welcome to Coffee Talk!

It's a wonderful lazy Saturday morning.

Let's settle in, sip on a mug of coffee (with Star Wars Spice Latte creamer) and chat for a while!

Over Coffee...

I'd tell you how I'm missing my favorite 10k this afternoon due to my foot injury.  This is the one race I've repeated the most times (see last year's windy recap here).  I'm pretty sad about it.  It is held at beautiful Callaway Gardens.  You get to preview their spectacular Fantasy in Lights display before it opens to the public.  It's advertised as a twilight race (interpretation: still daylight) but it is so deep in the woods you can actually see the lights quite well.

They have the music playing at all of the different scenes, which is my favorite part.  It really is a festive, get you in the holiday mood -- even though last weekend was Halloween -- type of race.  {Sniff Sniff -- Next Year!}

Yes, you run right through here!

This is so yummy!
Over Coffee...

I'd make sure you know there are only six weekends remaining until Christmas.  That thought sends a jolt of stress right through my body.  I love Christmas!  {HoHo...Ho}  I'm an admitted holiday light display junkie, the tackier the better.  I'll decorate with enthusiasm.  But I could do without the buy buy buy, clean clean clean, cook cook cook, wrap wrap wrap. Do you have a tip for surviving this time of year?

Over Coffee...

Speaking of my foot, I'd happily tell you how it feels a wee bit better this week.  The ladies at work even mentioned how my walking has improved.  What is that I see?  Oh, I think it's the faint glimmer of a light at the end of this tunnel.

Having been here before, this is where it really gets tough.  When the pain subsides, I start chomping at the bit.  I'm not going to rush it though.  I will stick to my pool running and cycling for a while longer.  Yes, I will.  {Repeat Often -- With Enthusiasm}

Over Coffee...

I'd tell you how we still how very little fall color in the deep south and how it's been very hot this week.  My clothes after early morning bike rides were as wet as if I had jumped in the pool.  I have to admit this gives me a little satisfaction, though.  If we were having those beautiful crisp fall days, it would be so much harder to be sidelined.  I think they are coming next week, though.  {Hurry Foot, Hurry!}

What would you tell me over coffee?

  1. Sending positive vibes your way Holly so that your foot heals. When I was injured, as soon as it started feeling a little better I would go run. It took forever for it to really heal because I was so impatient. Have a great weekend, its 70 degrees here in Paris !

    1. I appreciate that so much! I'm trying to be very patient. It's been warm but gloomy and rainy here so that helps with the whole not running thing.

  2. I think that is a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel! WOO HOO! I am sorry you are missing your favorite race tho- poop! :( All is see next week is temps in the 80's - are going to be wearing shorts for Christmas? UGG- thanks for the coffee!

    1. It wouldn't be the first time we could wear shorts for Christmas! We would just have a very Jimmy Buffet style "Christmas Island" Christmas.

  3. I haven't seen the spiced latte flavored coffee mate! I'll have to look for that. Too bad about the lights race. Sometimes races look for bike support course marshalls. Maybe you could talk to the race director about being the lead cyclist (whether they need one or not) and still get the race experience!

    1. That creamer is mostly cinnamon and very good. That's a great idea about bike support. It would probably terrify me, but still a great idea!

  4. Keeping my fingers crossed for a smooth return to running, whenever that happens.

    I've had to miss favorite traces; it's a bummer.

    Would you like to convert Judaism? :)

    1. Thank you Judy! I'm LOL because that reminds me of the Seinfeld episode where George wants to convert to Latvian Orthodox so he can date a particular girl.

  5. I hate missing runs over an injury. I had to back out of a half on Halloween because of my shoulder and back. Hope you are better soon. Thank you for coffee

    1. Oh, no! I hope your problems have been resolved. I think it happens to all of us at some point. I'm just not very patient about it.

  6. 6 more weekends?! Yikes that sounds so close, doesn't it? I'm sorry your foot's keeping you from one of your favorite races- but it is good to hear it's feeling a bit better.

    1. That doesn't sound like much time to get it all done, does it? But, we somehow all manage to make it work.

  7. I've had my share of foot injuries the last year and they are no fun at all especially when you have to miss races. Sounds like you are in the mend and you will be back at it soon Thanks for joining us for coffee today always great to catch up

    1. I enjoyed the coffee as always! Injuries just take time and patience, something I'm not good at.

  8. That race sounds really neat - hopefully you can run it next year. Recovering from injury takes time and patience. My strategy for avoiding holiday stress is to #RespectTheBird - I try not to get sucked in until after Thanksgiving.

    1. I just said that above, without looking at your comment. LOL. I DO want to respect the bird!! I don't like all of the commercialism or the way-too-advanced media blitz. But, realistically I need time to get it all together. And unfortunately, that's got to start soon.

  10. Wow that 10k would put me in the Christmas mood, how neat is that, but it will be there next year. :) Now that I'm a coffee drinker, I don't have very many mugs at all. I'm still sticking to my Yeti for now. I'm so glad you are seeing progress in your foot. I have been diligently praying for a super speedy recovery too!

    1. I appreciate that so much. I can't push it now, that would probably be the worst thing. I always buy a mug at Disney! It's a tradition. Get one on your next visit And then again in January!

  11. When you start feeling better, that's the time for the most self-control, right?! Take it easy and you'll be running as usual soon!

    1. Yes, Tina. It's time for major self control. Mental toughness at it's finest.

    1. Although it is way way too early, this race is very festive. It was my first 10k too. You run all through beautiful wooded Christmas scenes. Lovely.

  13. I sure hope your foot heals before it gets super cold! I'm still fighting PF. But it doesn't stop me from running.

    1. Oh, I'm down with super cold because around here that is probably 28 at worst. I can run in that. I actually like it! But wind? No thanks.

  15. OMG, only six weekends left until Christmas!?!?!? That is CRAZY to think about! LOL at the HoHo...Ho reference - very clever! I'm really glad to hear your foot is improving. Seeing that light at the end of the tunnel is the best feeling EVER.

    1. That little bit of light can drive you nuts though. You want to see it coming at you full speed ahead and it doesn't do that!

  17. ohhhhh, I LOVE this coffee chat! Lots of fun and interesting things to discuss. About your foot...I'm new following you (so I don't know the entire story), but UGH. I can totally understand how frustrating it must be. It's hard sitting on the sidelines when you'd rather be in the race...and it's even more difficult waiting it out (even beyond the "healing" to get clearance to "officially" get back at it. I am considering a new approach this winter....instead of scaling back my running and "maintaining," I am thinking of starting over, running short distances for awhile and gradually building back up (?). That will be a huge mental game, because I really want to do a long run (8-10ish miles) now and then (like usual). UGH. And Xmas shopping, in a way it has gotten easier as my kids have gotten older because they just want gift cards...but that takes so much of the fun out of it. #catch22

    1. This is the first time I've been sidelined for any real length of time since 2011 when I had an ankle stress fracture. I'd forgotten how crazy it makes you! Where I live, we run the majority of our races in Winter. Summer is when I should have scaled back, but this year I trained for Chicago instead. And I had a DNS. My youngest kids are teens. I think I just expect holiday stress after all these years, even though the shopping probably isn't as bad as it used to be.

  18. Over coffee I would tell you, I went for a trail run yesterday and omg my legs are feeling it now. Totally forgot how technically the trail is. Must get out there more often.
    I'd also stay that I'm listening to Beyonce, cause well someone said on my blog she is always on her playlist. I haven't listened to her in forever, so time to reconnect.
    Over coffee I'd say that I discovered I needed new work shoes the other day, thanks to the rain. I got wet feet.

    1. I haven't done many trail runs. In the past I've had some ankle issues and the trails make me nervous I'm going to turn my ankle. I do love being out in the woods though!
