Run & Ski (WW # 51)

Chicago Marathon Training -- Week 3

I was pleased with my marathon training this week.  I intended to cycle Saturday morning but the option of early morning water skiing trumped that.  In this heat, that is a no-brainer.  If I decide to do one more sprint triathlon {famous last words} I will put more swimming and cycling back in the schedule for a few weeks.  I also wasted a morning by oversleeping.  I never set an alarm and on the very rare occasion I sleep in, I figure it's my body's way of saying "Let's take a little break!"

No, I don't run with my arm like a chicken wing  --- I'm giving a thumbs up!


I've taken to cycling in my SLS3 Compression Socks.  {I was given a pair at no cost for my honest opinion.}  I think these butterfly socks are perfect for the bike!  An added bonus?  They keep the overgrown poison oak away from my legs when I walk my bike through the woods!  That's actually what gave me the idea to put them on in the first place.  Female ingenuity and all...

Seriously though, I typically get mild cramps around mile 10 on the bike.  So far, these socks have kept those away.  I've also worn them for recovery after a couple of long training runs.  My only complaint is I should have chosen a smaller size.  I wear an 8 regular shoe and 9 running shoe and opted for the S/M.  They are a touch too long.   I just fold the tops over.  The kind folks at SLS3 are still offering these at a heavily discounted price.  Use code YHM5PMSG to pay a mere $12.99.  There are several colors to choose from.  These are Lemon/Lime.

The pop of color didn't hurt on such a foggy morning either!


We went to the lake very early Saturday morning, the perfect time to ski.   Nobody comes out until after lunch it seems.  There was a fishing tournament going on, but I don't mind the smaller wakes of fishing boats.  They only move when they change locations anyway.  It's the pontoon and weighted wake board boats that kick up the big waves.  So, conditions were again ideal and I took full advantage of it by making 3 "runs" for a total of 45 miles (90 total minutes).  It's the only thing that makes me wish summer would stay around forever.   It would definitely not be the heat warnings we've been under all week.  We stopped at our favorite Mexican restaurant and just chilled for a long while on the way home.



Sunday's 14 mile long run was just that...LONG.  Hot.  Slow.  Nothing fancy.  It was noteworthy in that I managed to keep my heart rate in the 150s.  This is something I always struggle with.  So, today was a true win for me to keep it lower in hot summer conditions.

  1. Of course I saw your 2nd triathlon on Instagram! Amazing and very inspiring! Your water skiing pics are the best though! Congrats on running 14 miles in this heat and humidity! You're really setting the bar high! Have an awesome active week HoHo!

    1. I wasn't particularly looking forward to that long run this morning. But, it wasn't as bad as I had anticipated. It was hot but I just ran very slowly and kept to the shade.

  2. So I"m in northern Wisconsin, the water is like glass...and no one will take me skiing...sigh...

    I think I'm going to have to seriously take you up on your offer...

  3. OMG - you did 3 ski runs for 45 miles over 90 minutes!?!?? Your arms and back must be built like a steel fortress! The only times I've ever gone waterskiing, I could only stay up for a couple of minutes at a time, and my entire upper body was in pay for days afterwards. You are a superwoman!

    Love those compression socks with the butterflies! They match your shoes, too!

    1. Well, my shoulders and upper back do look a little freaky I'm afraid. LOL. I'm not superwoman. I'll be whimpering around tomorrow, trust me! Mondays equal pain, both physically and mentally.

  4. Congrats on your second tri! Those socks are really cute!! I like the butterflies. You're water skiing is amazing!! Good job on getting the long run done. I know it's soo hard with the heat and humidity.

    1. I do like the butterfly design! Yes, I've got quite a few more long runs to do in the heat & humidity. It will eventually get better though.

  5. Noteworthy about my week? Ha! I'm loving my recovery time from the ultra ;-) (and I LOVE my SLS3 socks as well...my review is coming in a day or so)

  6. We are going to the lake next week and my husband wants me to try water skiing but I'm too chicken! I didn't realize you jumped off a boat to start your tri. I will have to go read that!

    1. Maybe you'll change your mind once you get to the lake! I'm always afraid of what I can't see. Yes, we were required to jump off an old fashioned riverboat. It was pretty cool.

  7. I've been living vicariously through your water skiing pictures - looks like so much fun! I tried to sleep in this morning, but my dog kept nuzzling me so I got up at 6:30.

    1. Yeah, my dogs both like to get up around sunrise. But then they go back to bed. I realized today that water skiing season is probably half over already! Oh, no!

  8. Great week of training mixed with fun! Keeping your heart rate slow on a 14-miler in the heat is definitely an accomplishment!

    1. My HR will spike on a hill, but then not recover from it quickly. And then it's already time for the next hill. I actually ran more hills than normal today (274 feet) but just kept it super slow. I noticed my stride was a little shorter than normal. That probably helps.

  10. Have you ever clipped the back of your ankle with the chain or pedal? OUCH. I still have a scar. It's probably smart to wear longer socks anyway. Last weekend my HR was 7 higher and on a shorter run. I ran more hills today too. Go figure.

  13. Water skiing sounds like a great way to beat the heat... congrats on the long run and heart rate! My HR spikes in the summer - it's so hard to run in the heat!!

  14. I got those SLS3 socks too, in three colors :) I love the butterflies and bright colors. I haven't been water skiing in years, we used to go in Yellowtail Dam and you could see all the trees under the water that used to be above the ground but got covered up when they built the dam.. it always freaked me out that I would somehow get snagged on one.

    My noteworthy events this week... I took the kids fishing for the first time and we caught nothing, but we had a lot of fun!

  15. I too would have chosen a water activity. With how hot its been lately, anything that allows me to be in the water to beat the heat will trump most other activities.

  16. Sounds like you had a great training week! Even though I'm an early riser, I wouldn't trust myself to wake up on my own so I always set an alarm.

    Your waterskiing pictures are always so great. I'm glad you were able to get out for so long.

    1. One of my kids was very colicky. I stopped setting an alarm then and never looked back. If I have to set one for a race, I worry about it all night long.

  17. Any activity in the water sure wins right now! Love those pics! I am impressed you got the 14 miles in- that is amazing! I can't believe I pulled off a PR this summer but I only had 3.1 miles to go :)

  18. Congrats on the second tri! I never thought about compression sleeves and socks protecting from poison ivy and oak, but I don't break out from poison ivy at least. Hopefully everything was fine when you took the socks off.

  21. Oh goodness, 14 miles in this weather. I slogged through 7 yesterday and that was quite enough for me! I'm getting ready to start half marathon training soon, so I'll be back up in the 10-12 mile range, but hopefully it won't be quite as nasty outside by that time. Good job on your workouts!

  22. Those socks are cute. I've seen them online, but I think they look better on! I just bought my first pair of compression sleeves and so far, so goo. I suppose the most noteworthy part of my week was getting a lot of stuff finished that I'd been putting off. Luckily, productivity didn't eat into my running time too much! ;)

    My HR was high this past Saturday during my run. It was hot here in Chicago.

    Sleeping in is OK. It is your body telling you to rest up.

    1. I spent a couple of months running lower mileage in anticipation of this marathon cycle. It felt hard to get the miles back to double digits in this heat.

  30. We had a heat wave here in Pittsburgh this week...which if I had to guess, I would say is the weather y'all get all summer. So, extra props to you for running in all that nonsense. I cut 3 miles off my long run this weekend because I just "could not".

  31. Great job on your mileage! Our days last week were nearly identical, LOL except you went about double what I did on my long run Saturday:)
    Love that you go waterskiing so often, what better way to stay cool in the hot summer days! I am actually going to be doing a little waterskiing this week. But I am already positive I won't be able to stay up even a 1/4th of the time you do, LOL

  32. Noteworthy: my mid-week runs were all negative splits! my weekend runs, not so much... it's HOT here, too!! Sunday was a killer, and I think this coming Sunday will be a repeat, just a mile longer!

  39. I love the color of your socks 😊 Something noteworthy... My long run on Saturday was a mix of outdoor running and treadmill running due to storms. 11 hot and humid miles + 5 cool treadmill miles in the basement. That was a first and it through my stomach for a whirl!
