Coffee Talk (January)

Welcome to Coffee Talk!

Today, I am sharing a cup of coffee with you from the Happiest Place on Earth -- although not for some folks this morning. Sadly, Disney cancelled the half marathon scheduled for today.  My heart goes out to those people who trained hard and spent the money to travel here. Adding salt to their wounds, the weather currently is not hazardous.  The conditions are shaping up very nicely for tomorrow's race.

Over Coffee...

I'd tell you I'll be at the Disney Marathon Expo today.  What an overload of people, sights, sounds, and too much retail for this non-shopper!  After last year's oops-I-forgot-my-drivers-license fiasco, I've spent more than my fair share of time here.   Yes -- after my pitiful begging to multiple race officials, I had to make the long trek back to my hotel on snail-paced race transport, back again to the expo, and back again to the hotel (including some tedious initial misdirection by hotel staff).  Race transportation only goes to the resorts and not the parks -- where the remainder of my family was waiting.  That was such a long day that I vow never to repeat.  Yep, there was a cocktail in there somewhere to calm my nerves.

Over Coffee...

I'd admit I haven't set one goal or resolution for 2017.  I've never been a fan of making resolutions.  If something needs to be corrected -- if I need to start or to stop doing any activity -- why on earth would I wait until January 1st?  After I get this race out of the way, it will finally feel like the New Year.  I may pick some new states to run in or add some fun things to my bucket list.  Maybe this will be the year we travel to the Grand Canyon and ride those mules?   Or perhaps return to Colorado for some spectacular snow skiing and dog sledding?

Over Coffee...

I'd tell you how very pleased I was to receive new Shimano cycling shoes and clipless pedal system from PoPo for Christmas.   I really wanted these during the summer when I was participating in my first sprint triathlons.  I had such an urge to give them a spin on Christmas Day.  But, my better judgment prevailed.  What if I fell off and couldn't run this marathon?   I'll need a lot of practice to get comfortable with these pedals and I hope injury isn't part of that process.

Speaking of Coffee...

Do you use the Starbucks app?  I've been a Starbucks lover for years but never downloaded the app.  My town is relatively small and I just didn't see the need to order ahead at any of our locations.   On my birthday last month, a barista convinced me to sign up right there at the counter so I'd get a free coffee that day (spoiler, didn't happen!).  But, where has this been all my life?  Stars?  Double Stars?  Prizes?  Cheer Locations?  Free Coffees?  I've been sucked in!

I'm a little busy today, so I've got to run (pun intended).

But first, what would you share over coffee?

I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!

  1. I can't believe Disney canceled so far in advance -- I mean, I get it, the logistics of it all, but still . . . all the training, the travel . . .

Choosing not to work, and I'm happy I have that choice (just imagine the stress of caring for my folks if I was working & couldn't afford to spend that time with them?), means you're also choosy about the incidentals. Like no unlimited texting (ahem!) & no Starbucks (really, no need for it). Let's just not about running, running clothes, regular clothes . . .

May you have great weather tomorrow!

  2. I am still in shock over this whole Disney thing! There was one little streak of lightning this morning but I think it may shape up ok for me to go out and get my 10 miles in this morning! I do feel bad for all those runners that were looking forward to the weekend! Good luck tomorrow I will be cheering you on!

  3. I have the Starbucks app and it is really handy! My sister and I were running in Seattle and we were really hungry at the finish. We had no money but... We popped into Starbucks and I bought breakfast.

I think a trip to the north woods of Wisconsin (with me, of course) is in order...

  4. Bummer they cancelled it so early and the weather was not even bad. I am sure you will have a fun time down there anyway. Love the cycling shoes! I need to get a new pair too this spring. Yes Starbucks app is great-love not carrying any money. Thanks for linking up today!

  5. I would share with you that you need to road trip (or fly...we do have airports in Iowa LOL) my way! It's a bummer about the Disney 13.1...I'd be devastated, though I also probably try to find a way to "get it done" anyways. Good luck tomorrow!!!

  6. I've been jumping through all those wonderful star hoops with the Starbucks app for a couple of years now. Actually Monday is my double star day so I'll pretty much have a coffee IV hooked up. It's such a bummer they cancelled the half. Get that race face on girl because I know you're going to have a great marathon tomorrow! I'm with you in spirit!xoxo

  7. I'm glad to hear that your marathon is still happening...I heard about the half being cancelled, that's awful! I hope you're having a great time and I'll be rooting for you!

Those cycling shoes are really cute!

  8. Surprised they made the decision to cancel the half. So glad to hear everything is a go for the marathon. Sending you lots of good vibes for tomorrow. Can't wait to hear all about it!

  9. I still can't wrap my brain around agonizing much of the day yesterday about trying to get to my race today, then after 9pm they cancel. Some races are just not meant to run I guess. I'm glad I only had a 90 minute drive I can't imaging a destination race like Disney.
Speaking of which, good luck to you tomorrow, remember I'll be there with you in spirit!

  10. What a bummer that they cancelled the 1/2...seriously sad for those people! I don't have the starbucks app either...but sounds like I should! I am afraid it might reel me in deeper to my already problematic coffee addiction!

  11. Oh, I love your new Shimano's! I have been using my clipless pedal system for a couple of years now. Yes, you will take a tumble or two when first getting used to them, but you'll be fine. I really enjoy them in Spin classes even more than out on the road ...no chance of falling in class! :)

Good luck tomorrow Holly, I'll be tracking you!!! xoxo

  12. I've never used the Starbucks app, but I also can't remember the last time I visited a Starbucks! Every year for my birthday they send me an email for a free drink, but I always forget about it ;)

It can really be a bummer for those who had their race canceled, but I know it wasn't a lightly-made decision and it must have been tough to make the call. It's better to cancel and nothing happen versus running the race and having the lightening hit like was predicted!

  13. You know me and the Starbucks app are very close friends.

Good luck tomorrow. Hope you have good weather. I feel so bad for those running the half today.

  15. You KNOW I use the Starbucks app. On auto-reload. It has a good find-the-nearest-store function that I use when I travel.

Good call on not trying out the new bike shoes last weekend. My first try at clipless pedals ended in bloody knees -- I had a very low speed crash when I forgot to unclip BEFORE I came to stop, testing them out on our street!

It's such a bummer about the Disney Half weather situation, but that means things will go extra-well for you tomorrow, I'm sure of it! :-)

  16. That's such a bummer that they cancelled it! :[

I'm with you on new year's resolutions! I just like making goals in general throughout the year and at any time, any day. I've always wanted to ride the mules in the Grand Canyon and Colorado is on my bucket list too! :O Hope you get to do something awesome off your bucket list!

  17. Good luck today!!! Hopefully you're enjoying yourself at this exact moment, either on the run or having just finished! Smart move on not trying the clip less pedals until post marathon... everyone falls in them! 'My other tip (I wrote a cycling tips post a while back) is to see if you can practice on a trainer (if you have one) or otherwise in a doorway. Can't wait to hear more about this adventure!!!

  18. I don't visit Starbucks too often (I mean, not daily anyway) but I have the app and yes, the perks are really good!

  19. I love the Starbucks app and I've been a Gold Member since 2015. :-)

  20. Didn't know about that Starbucks app... I need to hurry and download. I promised the hubs that I'd quit Starbucks when he quit smoking (so far no movement towards not smoking so I think my little Starbucks habit is safe for a little while).
