Tricia and I are thrilled you have chosen to link with us on the Weekly Wrap.  If you link early, please make sure you come back later in the week and check some of the other posts.  Our simple tip to the newcomers for making this linkup work for you:  the more you interact with others, the more they will interact with you.  We hope you'll find the connections, support and motivation you've been searching for right here!

**********************************************************

In preparation for the Door County Half Marathon, I did ... not very much at all this week.  I acted like a slug tapered during this last week like a boss.  Aside from a short run on Tuesday morning, there was nothing else. Zip.  Nada.  No strength exercises, no cross training or cycling on the mag trainer.   This was all done in hopes that the aggravating little aches and pains from working hard over the past few weeks would calm down before Saturday {I'm talkin' to you left hip!}.   A girl can dream...

I felt the need to represent the entire color wheel!

I had no lofty goals for this half except to treat it like a training run with a strong finish.  Since I'm still training for the Utah Valley Half in June, I wanted to really practice pushing it on the downhill portions of this race.   Of course, that also meant successfully navigating the uphills.  And I knew there would be a lot of those!

As luck would have it, Thursday morning's travel was shaping up to be a stressful, stormy southern mess.  I prayed there would be no road or flight delays en route to beautiful Door County, Wisconsin.   This is the part of racing that makes me nervous...always the travel logistics, never the race itself.

And that's where I'll have to leave you.   Hopefully, I'll get a chance to add a quick summary or pictures before this goes live.  If not, you'll have to check back later to see how my buddy Wendy and I experienced a #holottadoco fun and how half marathon # 45 went down.

And that's a wrap!

Tell me about your week!
How long do you taper before a race?

  1. Hope you felt good in your race! I think that was a smart approach, given the aches and pains you are battling. This last week I took time off after my half and then eased into running again before a 10k yesterday. I often taper with lots of days off, but the coach I started working with is giving me a little more mileage before a race than I'm used to. We'll see how it goes!

  2. I also get really nervous when traveling to a race. You just never know about flight delays or bad weather - it can be stressful!!

I hope that you had an awesome race. From what I saw on IG, it looks like both you and Wendy had a great time!!

  3. Such a tease! There hasn't been a whole lot going on down here, either. Those darn aches; I'm beginning to think it's just an aging thing & you've got to accept it.

I got plenty of hill practice in my last half, too. But I would be lying if I said the elevation in UT doesn't scare me a bit.

  4. That was a good plan to keep it easy last week to prepare for the race, even though you were using it as a training run. Hope it went well for you!

  9. Ha, i love your running outfit! It has been chilly here lately, no tanks or shorts for my runs (which I don't mind). You've done nearly 50 half marathons?! Way to go!

  10. I ^think^ I know your week of rest paid off! Can't wait to hear the details. My second destination race ever is in two weeks and this one will involve flying, but it's not an "A" race so I'm not going to stress over it -- really I'm not.

  11. I hope your week of resting paid off, and I hope you didn't have any hip issues. I think it's neat to run a half marathon as a training run for another half marathon and have done that several times myself. Like you, if I ever travel to a race I am typically more worried about the travel part than the race part... especially with foods and because I never sleep well in a hotel room!

  12. You're going to Utah in June to race? How fun! I'll be there in two weeks for the Ogden Marathon. Have you ever raced in elevation? I've heard it's beautiful there so nonetheless, I'm excited!

  13. Traveling is stressful at times. So many unknowns especially in new places. Can't wait to read about your race!

  14. Talk about a nice taper! I'm looking forward to your recap. I've never traveled much for a race before, they've always been fairly local.

  15. tapering before a half? about a week, with maybe a little jog around the park, but not much else. before a full, two weeks with only maybe two "easy" interval sessions and two little jogs. Sunday run less than 10K. I have two weeks now before my Half, I'm not actually going to do much because my right knee is bothering me again... I'll just make sure I get all my steps in and bike a bit.

the travel part IS stressful but we do seem to be getting it sussed by now. one thing we DON'T do anymore is travel the day before the race. Always two days before. It's a luxury (problem) I know, but this is mainly because of the distance we have to go. If in the country then we'll do one day before even, if it's more than an hour by car and the race starts early...

  16. Traveling can always be a stressful part of a race weekend! I always feel like I didn't do enough during my training cycle that I try to cram in more miles when I should be tapering. I need to work on that!

  17. It was fun catching up with you and Wendy this weekend over Insta. Looked like you had a blast!

  18. I always worry about travel logistics for races, too, much more than the race itself. I do about a week taper for a half marathon if it's a goal race. Just a few shorter, easy runs, and no barre or strength work. Maybe a yoga class, but that's about it. For non-goal half marathons, I don't really taper at all.

  19. Can't wait to hear about your race!! I've only traveled for races a couple times, and always ended up forgetting something important (knee brace, favorite chapstick, etc. lol)!

  20. looking forward to reading all about the race and the weekend! I agree, the travel logistics are so much more worrisome than the race itself.

  21. Traveling always makes me nervous too. Once I'm at the destination, I can start to relax.

  22. Looking forward to the recap! I'm learning lately how complicated race logistics can be especially with travel!

    ReplyDelete
  23. I tend to take taper a little TOO seriously. I'm starting to realize that taking most of the week off leading to my race seems to do me more harm than good. Even if it's all just mental.

  24. Congratulations on another half marathon!! how amazing!! Half marathon #45 is an amazing achievement!!

    Thank you for hosting!

  25. I bet you and Wendy had so much fun! Can't wait to read your full recap.

    Thanks for the linkup!

  26. I've been MIA for a while, so you are coming to Utah in June? Funny story, I am also going to be running the Utah Valley Half Marathon. Well at least I am signed up, I haven't focused much on running training, but I need to:) I'll be hiking my R2R2R just a few days before the race so I'll be on tired legs. Good news is, even though its a downhill race, the canyon it comes down is one of the least steepest so it's actually an enjoyable run, I think you'll like it! Maybe I'll get a chance to meet you in person at the starting line!
Saw your race pics on IG, looks like you lovely ladies had a great time!!!

  27. I hope your hip shaped up - believe me - I know hip problems! And I hope the travel didn't work out to be as difficult as it was shaping up to be; looking forward to the race recap!
I taper about a week before a half - I managed two weeks before Dopey this year!

  28. All the best with your hip. Just take care of yourself.
