I didn't include anything about the recent Pancake Run For Missions 5k last week. The temperature wasn't too bad (66), but the humidity was 100%. I was happy to run fairly even splits but it certainly wasn't my day for speed. I could still feel those Door County Half Marathon hills. This 5k is a favorite of mine. It runs through such a beautiful, grand, older neighborhood and (doh) they serve pancakes afterwards. And...give out trophies. {Just sayin'.} It was good to see some old running friends and meet a few new ones too. The sweet lady (age 44?) who won overall female had not raced at all since running track in high school. You go girl!
The summer heat and humidity returned this week with a vengeance. I managed a slow 10 miler in Saturday's steam bath and some downhill interval training in Sunday's -- my 400s averaged 7:49 and my 600s averaged 7:52. It was all I could do not to puke. {Keeping it real!} Other runners talk about acclimating to it but I never seem to. Kudos to those that can. In my mind, that would classify as a super hero power. [For the life of me, I could not come up with a good super hero name. Ho-midity Humbler? Give it your best shot!]
Unfortunately my left hip continues its crankiness, which is just another item for the it's-always-something file. It does seem somewhat better after rolling that piriformas with a tennis ball and stretching that hamstring. I'll definitely keep that up all week.

Any tips for un-cranking a cranky hip?
Ha!l My post for Tues/Weds is all about preventing heat related problems...so you'll just have to wait! Altho I bet you are way more of an expert than me on this one.
ReplyDeleteYou'd think I'd be good at running in the heat. I'm not! I struggle with it every year.
DeleteUgh, that summer humidity sounds brutal. I am SO not ready for the heat. Running in the heat just sucks all the energy from me, it's brutal. I'm sorry to hear about your hip and I hope that it starts to feel better soon. Love the Runner Girl Gang bag!
ReplyDeleteI think the guest host idea is perfect - you ladies deserve a break this summer! Should we use this new image as well for the Weekly Wrap posts? If you're looking for bloggers to help out with this, just let me know!
If you'd like to use the summer image, please use the one without a guest host's name as it will change each week. I've put one on my sidebar. ^^ The old one will work too. We're not picky. We'd love to have you as a guest host! Send me an email with a requested date.
DeleteOh gosh...we are "Hip Sisters" ;-) My piriformis has been pretty quiet (for awhile...totally jinxing that by saying it out loud), but my left hip has been a bit weird since Route 66. It's on the front of the hip...hip flexor region. Nothing chronic, but certainly ever-present. I try to foam roll it (lying on top of the roller, putting pressure on the tender spot) and massage it periodically. Again, it's not debilitation, but I can feel it if I'm running hills or rolling a certain way in bed.
ReplyDeleteWe are so hip! HA!! I think my problem is bursitis in the joint with occasional piriformis flare-ups. So, no pain in the front. I've dealt with it of and on for years. Turning over in bed is the worst!
DeleteWe all had that crazy heat this week huh? I need to have a gradual ease into summer running. hope your hip is feeling better this week
ReplyDeleteI saw it was snowing somewhere this week. I can't fathom! I like summer because I get to water ski, but it seems too hot too early.
DeleteI like the new weekly wrap badge. Sorry I have the old one up as I didn't know about the guest host thing. I hope your hip doesn't give you more problems. Thanks for the link up.
ReplyDeleteThe new badge is not required. However, if you'd like to use it -- make sure to use the one on my side bar up there ^^ without a guest host's name. It will change each week.
DeleteWow, I can't imagine running in 100% humidity! I think I'd have to find a treadmill rather than run outside. We just had rain all week! No summer sunshine for us.
ReplyDeleteFor hips I usually recommend the King pigeon yoga pose with a forward bend. It really opens up and stretches the hip area!
100% humidity is a daily predawn summer occurrence where I live. It gets a little better as the day goes on. You have to pick your poison. LOL. I'll check out king pigeon pose.
DeleteOh man that weather! I better complain when it was 80 degrees and hot for a few days this past week. I'll be interested in being a guest too. School is over in a few weeks so I'll have more time.
ReplyDeleteOur summer weather takes some mental adjustment on my part! We'd love to have you as a quest host this summer. Shoot me an email with your preferred date.
DeleteI would be spending a lot of time on my treadmill if we still lived in TX; I'm sure. I remember how you'd start sweating the minute you walked out the door in summer -- no matter what time of day.
ReplyDeleteMy left leg in general tends to be cranky. Unless it's the right, of course. I do wish I could get to the bottom of it but so far I just haven't.
Nice job on the AG award And not puking.
Well, you may remember I gave my treadmill away years ago. I still prefer a slow steamy run over an indoor run. I just need to get my head wrapped around the change.
DeleteThe heat is just starting here and I'm okay with that! It's so nice to be outside in the sunshine and enjoy it! Running in the humidity is the worst....I'm about 1 month out from high humidity here!
ReplyDeleteDo we use the new weekly wrap up badge now?
Humidity is an energy sucker! You don't have to use the new badge, but if you do -- please use the one without a guest host's name (as that will change). There is one on my side bar up there ^^.
DeleteI have no tricks for beating the heat and humidity; unfortunately, I feel your pain with the weather all too well. It just sucks, plain and simple. I try to remember that the runner I am in that (this, it's here) weather is not the same runner that I am when it gets cooler, and I generally try to exert less effort. Oh and drink a lot - do margaritas count? Kidding! ;)
ReplyDeleteI definitely drink more. In the winter, I'll go run for an hour without any liquid. I can't do that in the summer. And yes, margaritas do count!
DeleteWow! That's quite the age-group award. So fancy. Congrats! I live in the dry heat of Vegas, so no tips on dealing with humidity. I'm glad to have left that behind when I left MN 5 years ago. :)
ReplyDeleteIt is a nice award for a small town race! I'm going to experience your dry air later this year. I can't wait!
DeleteThat is awesome that the lady that won had not raced since high school! That’s crazy! Congrats on your trophy! I also never seem to acclimate to the humidity and heat. I try, but I usually just end up feeling sick. Good job not puking! LOL :) Have a great week!
ReplyDeleteShe was sitting at our table and was so sweet and humble. She had recently returned started running (since high school) and had never run a 5k race!
DeleteCONGRATS on your AG award!! That's awesome! And not puking? A plus :)
ReplyDeleteOh, yes that's always a plus. I don't know why I feel like I'm going to when I run now. I'm blaming the humidity!
DeleteCongratulations on your AG award! All I can do to beat the heat is hydrate and SLOW down. My pace wasn't great to begin with and now I'm super sluggish out there. Looks like we get our last cool snap Wednesday and Thursday! Let's take advantage of it!
ReplyDeleteI'm much slower in the heat and that certainly messes with my head for a while. I'm still waiting on that cool snap...
DeleteAwesome job on your 5k and in that humidity! Congrats on the AG place and so cool you got a trophy! I don't have any tips since I'm not good in the heat and humidity either. Hope your hip is better soon!
ReplyDeleteSummer is the perfect time to cut back for some rest and recovery while it's humidity anyway.
DeleteIt's always a win when there's no puking!! Congrats on the AG! And I've got zero tips on humidity since you'd think our humidity in NH wasn't even existent compared to yours.
ReplyDeleteFeeling like I might me sick is more prevalent this year. Oh the joys of aging!
DeleteCongrats on your race! Not sure about the humidity but I just try to make sure I stay hydrated and drink alot of nuun!
ReplyDeleteI am currently using Tailwind which I like a lot! I wish there was a magic solution for breathing better in the humidity...other than growing gills!
DeleteHumidity is the worst. Mad props to you for running through it at any pace. I think I'd take speedwork to my cool basement in those conditions. That is one sweet trophy. I runfess there's a local 5k literally one mile from my house that used to have sweet trophies 5 deep and a pancake breakfast. When they dropped the trophies for generic medals I stopped going.
ReplyDeleteI like getting trophies, but then I don't like dusting them. LOL. I must admit medals are so much easier to display (and dust).
DeleteI got a taste of the heat in NYC last week, but luckily it moved out before it got bad. It's coming though! Love the guest hosting ideas -- it's always great to get to know other bloggers better. I've met so many through this link up already!
ReplyDeleteI'm ready for another trip to NYC. We thought it would be a great way to spotlight different bloggers and hopefully provide new connections.
DeleteEh, heat acclimation. I feel like you "acclimate" to it in the sense that you aren't quite as wiped out after the run (right now I'm exhausted after my hot/humid runs)... but the pace never really adapts because it's just not ideal running conditions. Lets be honest, there's a reason why the South doesn't have marathons and half marathons from May-August! Still, I'm glad you had a good week, got new shoes, and I love the guest host idea.
ReplyDeleteNo, my pace never adapts to it. It's all about effort this time of the year and not pace.
Deletepancakes and a trophy. How perfect.
ReplyDeleteI ran in 90s and high humidity last week. I felt like puking and was happy not too. I just had to dial down the speed and focus on the finish line.
Congrats on your award.
The pancakes had a touch of cinnamon so I thought they were delicious with a touch of butter and no syrup at all.
DeleteOoo pancakes! I hope you feel better after the 10-miler. When the Texas summer hit, I was inside on the treadmill. I don't know if I've ever acclimated to summer humidity.
ReplyDeleteI always run early to beat the heat but that is when the humidity is at its highest point. It can be frustrating.
DeleteI know all about that puke feeling! Holy Batman it is sweaty! Coach M is really working me with the speed and I feel like I may melt before I hit the finish line- LOL! Any 5K that serves pancakes would be a favorite of mine too- and congrats on the age group award! Can't believe Utah is creeping up fast! Looking forward to seeing you!
ReplyDeleteI'm praying for dry and coldish weather in Utah. I'll be traveling from sweaty FL like you. Two extremes (I hope).
DeleteThe humidity is kicking my butt!!! Love breaking in a new pair of shoes!
ReplyDeleteI love new shoes but these truly never need breaking in. If I close my eyes, I couldn't tell you if I was wearing a new pair or an old one. And that's wonderful!!
DeleteI got really nervous reading the title of this post! Haha! I have no tricks for heat and humidity - I need tricks. I used to wet and freeze one of my running hats for long runs, and freeze half of my bladder so my water would stay cold. Glute Bridges and calm shells seem to have helped my cranky hip, I should probably do them more often! I haven't heard of Runner Girl Gang but I LOVE it. I have to find out more!
ReplyDeleteDid the title get your attention? Ha! I've tried freezing my drinks but they are already unfrozen by the time I make my first stop.
DeleteIt's so hard to find speed on hot/humid days! I always train for 5ks in the summer and then get to May and wonder why?! I need a nice cool fall 5k instead!
ReplyDeleteIt takes a while for me to mentally accept it, to just relax and run and the proper EFFORT. I'll eventually get there.
DeleteYums!! Pancakes!! I could have pancakes after a race!! That sounds delicious!
ReplyDeleteThe heat started earlier this year!
I know the puking feeling too well!! sometimes it helped to have an ice cold beverage before starting to run, it helped for a little bit anyway.
I think the heat arrived much earlier this year! I can't drink enough ICE water once I'm finished. It just tastes so good.
DeleteLove the guest host idea (I'm interested - you've got mail :-)). The humidity is nuts already, isn't it? I'm hoping this year I acclimate. Like you, I don't feel like I have but I think that may be because of my asthma, which is much better controlled this year.
ReplyDeletePancakes after a race is pretty much perfection!
It takes me a while to wrap my head around the unrelenting humidity. I eventually do. After all, there is nothing I can do to change it.
DeleteCongratulations on your race! I would love to see where/how you keep all of your medals, awards, and trophies!
ReplyDeleteI love speed work but that "almost-puke" feeling is not my favorite!
I think I've mentioned dozens of times how much I HATE running in the heat in humidity...definitely my Kryptonite!
The trophies are nice to receive, but honestly they are big dust collectors. But, I keep a few favorites on display.
DeleteI love the idea of a guest host! And humidity is definitely tough. I struggle with it every year and just get in the miles however I can, even if it's walking. I hope your hip feels better soon!
ReplyDeleteI definitely have to slow down in the summer and take a lot of breaks. It's pretty humbling.
DeleteCongrats on the AG award! I'm still battling getting used to the humidity, but it seems like I do get used to it a little when it is non-stop... or maybe it's just my mind giving in to it.
ReplyDeleteIn my case, I think I give in when I realize my excessing whining isn't working. LOL.
DeleteI don't think I ever fully acclimate to the heat and humidity, but I certainly do better in it a few weeks into the season than I do the first few day's it hits.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on your AG award! Who doesn't love a ponytailed runner trophy?
Thanks for the linkup!
Yeah, that trophy had me at pony tail.
DeleteNo puking is always a win. :)
ReplyDeleteIt definitely is for me. Being my age and female only makes it worse!
DeleteHey no puking is a massive win!!!
ReplyDeleteGreat job on keeping your cookies down in that mess! I've been running so slow lately til I forgot what it was like to push myself. I'm glad I didn't need the medical tent after my 5k Saturday.
I remember seeing that Pancake 5k in my Montgomery pack it sure looked fun!
This is probably the best (prettiest) 5k we have...but it is usually the first very steamy one too. I've forgotten what it's like to push hard to.
DeleteGreat idea on the guest host, if I had the time I'd totally do it, but it would take me two weeks to catch up on all the blogs who link up and I sadly usually only pick 2-3 new ones when I link up, I need more time in my life!
ReplyDeleteI'm really sorry to hear you've been having trouble with your hip! Hope you can get it worked out soon, isn't it your water ski season? Hopefully it won't keep you from lots of that this summer!
I've actually already skied once this season. I'm hoping to do a lot more now that the unofficial start of summer is here. It usually doesn't bother my hips. No pounding for the win!
DeleteI use Tailwind and that helps some. Yes, Wendy is our guest host this week. Would you like to be a host sometime this summer (while work is lighter)?
ReplyDeleteWhat a cool AG award trophy! Sorry to hear your hip is still giving you troubles. Hope it feels better soon!
ReplyDeleteThis race does a great job with their awards. The hip is better already.
DeleteSo did you win an AG award? the trophy is sweet but maybe my lack of sleep for the past two weeks didn't quite understand it from your post.
ReplyDeleteheat and humidity... the only thing I can say is "UGH" being from the southwest originally I prefer the dry heat over humidity any day. But in the Netherlands it gets pretty humid. So basically I run very early when the humidity is at it's worst and I hydrate even more than usual. but I totally get it. I'm not a good humidity runner. Chicago Rock 'n' Roll nearly flattened me from the humidity!!
My superhero power is most likely my sarcasm. No. Really. I have no idea what it would be!
What's exactly happening with your hip? Have you tried dry needling? I never thought I would do it myself but after 4 sessions in mostly my glutes, hamstrings and hip I'm only down to knee issues!!
Yes, I placed first in my AG. I also run at a time when the humidity is at its worse (early mornings before work). Ha -- Sarcasm is a great superhero power! I have thought about dry needling. If I return to PT, I will definitely go that route.
DeleteThe race sounds fun! I'm sorry to hear your piriformis is giving you a problem. I had piriformis issues last year. Do you do cat cow? It helped me a lot. Also bird dog. Hope it settles down soon!
ReplyDeleteMy hip, coupled with piriformis and IT issues, is what sent me to PT last winter. It would do me a world of good to rest for a bit, but with Utah looming -- I'm pressing on. I will take a break after that race!
DeleteMy tips for beating the heat and humidity are to move to the Pacific Northwest :) I used to live in Oklahoma and it's no surprise that I rarely EVER ran. The heat sucks the air right out of my lungs.
ReplyDeleteExactly. It is like there is NO air. If only I were a fish...
DeleteGirl, between your hip and my ankle we may have to just let gravity 'roll' us down those 13 miles! lol But, it'll still be fabulous! I can't wait!
ReplyDeleteActually, that sounds like a fabulous plan! Looking forward to finally meeting you -- although I feel like we are old friends.
DeleteHeat and humidity make me want to puke, too! I don't know how you southerners do it because running up here would be a cake walk for you. Today is a breezy 75 degrees... that's nothing, right?!
ReplyDeleteYou earned a very pretty trophy for your AG award! And the pancakes. That's quite a nice post-run treat, too, if you can keep them down ;)
Beet powder for icing? lol
ReplyDelete
