I didn't include anything about the recent Pancake Run For Missions 5k last week.  The temperature wasn't too bad (66), but the humidity was 100%.  I was happy to run fairly even splits but it certainly wasn't my day for speed.  I could still feel those Door County Half Marathon hills.  This 5k is a favorite of mine.  It runs through such a beautiful, grand, older neighborhood and (doh) they serve pancakes afterwards.    And...give out trophies.  {Just sayin'.}  It was good to see some old running friends and meet a few new ones too. The sweet lady (age 44?) who won overall female had not raced at all since running track in high school.  You go girl!

The summer heat and humidity returned this week with a vengeance.  I managed a slow 10 miler in Saturday's steam bath and some downhill interval training in Sunday's -- my 400s averaged 7:49 and my 600s averaged 7:52.  It was all I could do not to puke.  {Keeping it real!}   Other runners talk about acclimating to it but I never seem to.   Kudos to those that can.  In my mind, that would classify as a super hero power.  [For the life of me, I could not come up with a good super hero name.  Ho-midity Humbler?  Give it your best shot!]

Unfortunately my left hip continues its crankiness, which is just another item for the it's-always-something file.  It does seem somewhat better after rolling that piriformas with a tennis ball and stretching that hamstring.  I'll definitely keep that up all week.

Highlights of the week:

My running friend Beth at the Pancake 5k.
Age group award.  Whoot!
New shoe day.
Have you heard about the Runner Girl Gang?
You are all part of my sisterhood!
I surrender to thee, Humidity!

And, no puking for the win!

And that's a wrap!

What are your tricks for beating the heat and humidity?

What is your Super Hero power?

Any tips for un-cranking a cranky hip?

  1. Ha!l My post for Tues/Weds is all about preventing heat related problems...so you'll just have to wait! Altho I bet you are way more of an expert than me on this one.

    1. You'd think I'd be good at running in the heat. I'm not! I struggle with it every year.

  2. Ugh, that summer humidity sounds brutal. I am SO not ready for the heat. Running in the heat just sucks all the energy from me, it's brutal. I'm sorry to hear about your hip and I hope that it starts to feel better soon. Love the Runner Girl Gang bag!

I think the guest host idea is perfect - you ladies deserve a break this summer! Should we use this new image as well for the Weekly Wrap posts? If you're looking for bloggers to help out with this, just let me know!

    1. If you'd like to use the summer image, please use the one without a guest host's name as it will change each week. I've put one on my sidebar. ^^ The old one will work too. We're not picky. We'd love to have you as a guest host! Send me an email with a requested date.

  3. Oh gosh...we are "Hip Sisters" ;-) My piriformis has been pretty quiet (for awhile...totally jinxing that by saying it out loud), but my left hip has been a bit weird since Route 66. It's on the front of the hip...hip flexor region. Nothing chronic, but certainly ever-present. I try to foam roll it (lying on top of the roller, putting pressure on the tender spot) and massage it periodically. Again, it's not debilitation, but I can feel it if I'm running hills or rolling a certain way in bed.

    1. We are so hip! HA!! I think my problem is bursitis in the joint with occasional piriformis flare-ups. So, no pain in the front. I've dealt with it of and on for years. Turning over in bed is the worst!

  4. We all had that crazy heat this week huh? I need to have a gradual ease into summer running. hope your hip is feeling better this week

  5. I like the new weekly wrap badge. Sorry I have the old one up as I didn't know about the guest host thing. I hope your hip doesn't give you more problems. Thanks for the link up.

    1. The new badge is not required. However, if you'd like to use it -- make sure to use the one on my side bar up there ^^ without a guest host's name. It will change each week.

  6. Wow, I can't imagine running in 100% humidity! I think I'd have to find a treadmill rather than run outside. We just had rain all week! No summer sunshine for us.

For hips I usually recommend the King pigeon yoga pose with a forward bend. It really opens up and stretches the hip area!

    1. 100% humidity is a daily predawn summer occurrence where I live. It gets a little better as the day goes on. You have to pick your poison. LOL. I'll check out king pigeon pose.

  7. Oh man that weather! I better complain when it was 80 degrees and hot for a few days this past week. I'll be interested in being a guest too. School is over in a few weeks so I'll have more time.

    1. Our summer weather takes some mental adjustment on my part! We'd love to have you as a quest host this summer. Shoot me an email with your preferred date.

  8. I would be spending a lot of time on my treadmill if we still lived in TX; I'm sure. I remember how you'd start sweating the minute you walked out the door in summer -- no matter what time of day.

My left leg in general tends to be cranky. Unless it's the right, of course. I do wish I could get to the bottom of it but so far I just haven't.

Nice job on the AG award And not puking.

    1. Well, you may remember I gave my treadmill away years ago. I still prefer a slow steamy run over an indoor run. I just need to get my head wrapped around the change.

  9. The heat is just starting here and I'm okay with that! It's so nice to be outside in the sunshine and enjoy it! Running in the humidity is the worst....I'm about 1 month out from high humidity here!

Do we use the new weekly wrap up badge now?

    1. Humidity is an energy sucker! You don't have to use the new badge, but if you do -- please use the one without a guest host's name (as that will change). There is one on my side bar up there ^^.

  10. I have no tricks for beating the heat and humidity; unfortunately, I feel your pain with the weather all too well. It just sucks, plain and simple. I try to remember that the runner I am in that (this, it's here) weather is not the same runner that I am when it gets cooler, and I generally try to exert less effort. Oh and drink a lot - do margaritas count? Kidding! ;)

    ReplyDelete

    1. I definitely drink more. In the winter, I'll go run for an hour without any liquid. I can't do that in the summer. And yes, margaritas do count!

  11. Wow! That's quite the age-group award. So fancy. Congrats! I live in the dry heat of Vegas, so no tips on dealing with humidity. I'm glad to have left that behind when I left MN 5 years ago. :)

  14. Congratulations on your AG award! All I can do to beat the heat is hydrate and SLOW down. My pace wasn't great to begin with and now I'm super sluggish out there. Looks like we get our last cool snap Wednesday and Thursday! Let's take advantage of it!

  18. Humidity is the worst. Mad props to you for running through it at any pace. I think I'd take speedwork to my cool basement in those conditions. That is one sweet trophy. I runfess there's a local 5k literally one mile from my house that used to have sweet trophies 5 deep and a pancake breakfast. When they dropped the trophies for generic medals I stopped going.

  19. I got a taste of the heat in NYC last week, but luckily it moved out before it got bad. It's coming though! Love the guest hosting ideas -- it's always great to get to know other bloggers better. I've met so many through this link up already!

  20. Eh, heat acclimation. I feel like you "acclimate" to it in the sense that you aren't quite as wiped out after the run (right now I'm exhausted after my hot/humid runs)... but the pace never really adapts because it's just not ideal running conditions. Lets be honest, there's a reason why the South doesn't have marathons and half marathons from May-August! Still, I'm glad you had a good week, got new shoes, and I love the guest host idea.

  25. I got really nervous reading the title of this post! Haha! I have no tricks for heat and humidity - I need tricks. I used to wet and freeze one of my running hats for long runs, and freeze half of my bladder so my water would stay cold. I'm really sorry to hear you've been having trouble with your hip! Hope you can get it worked out soon, isn't it your water ski season? Hopefully it won't keep you from lots of that this summer!

  38. So did you win an AG award? the trophy is sweet but maybe my lack of sleep for the past two weeks didn't quite understand it from your post.

heat and humidity... the only thing I can say is "UGH" being from the southwest originally I prefer the dry heat over humidity any day. But in the Netherlands it gets pretty humid. So basically I run very early when the humidity is at it's worst and I hydrate even more than usual. but I totally get it. I'm not a good humidity runner. Chicago Rock 'n' Roll nearly flattened me from the humidity!!

My superhero power is most likely my sarcasm. No. Really. I have no idea what it would be!

What's exactly happening with your hip? Have you tried dry needling? I never thought I would do it myself but after 4 sessions in mostly my glutes, hamstrings and hip I'm only down to knee issues!!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes, I placed first in my AG. I also run at a time when the humidity is at its worse (early mornings before work). Ha -- Sarcasm is a great superhero power! I have thought about dry needling. If I return to PT, I will definitely go that route.

  39. The race sounds fun! I'm sorry to hear your piriformis is giving you a problem. I had piriformis issues last year. Do you do cat cow? It helped me a lot. Also bird dog. Hope it settles down soon!

    1. My hip, coupled with piriformis and IT issues, is what sent me to PT last winter. It would do me a world of good to rest for a bit, but with Utah looming -- I'm pressing on. I will take a break after that race!
