**********************************************************
This week started off watching Hurricane Irma slowly make her way north. I had added an extra run last Sunday knowing we'd have a few days of rainy weather. Thankfully we stayed on her "good" side, but it wasn't until Wednesday morning that I got out for a run. Also shaping up to be our coolest morning of the week, I chose a tempo run.
And then our summer weather returned with a vengeance. Friday's and Sunday's runs were in the soul searching, pace humbling humidity. After three hours, Saturday's 40 mile bike ride had me completed cooked. There was no breeze and little shade.
This was a failed bike selfie attempt. I thought the clouds were pretty! |
Another failure trying to capture my shadow. I captured the mileage on my bike computer though. |
Earlier in the week this popped into my mailbox from Active.com; a century ride that was not even on my radar. You may remember, Teresa and I were planning on an October ride. After trying to schedule this for almost a year, not being able to coordinate dates, and wanting lately to "just get 'er done" going ahead with it next weekend seemed like the obvious choice All aboard the crazy train...
We can only hope for cooler weather {probably not going to happen} or at least overcast skies. Oh, did I mention the elevation gain on this ride is in excess of 4800 feet? All aboard the crazy train...
Were you affected by Irma this week?
Have you boarded the crazy train lately?
And that's a wrap!
That sounds like a tough ride, indeed! Good luck!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks, as always, for the linkup. :-)
I must admit I've gotten myself nervous over the whole ride thing. I hope those hills are as tough as I'm fearing.
DeleteWe had a tiny taste of your southern weather the past few days (and I was ever grateful for it...cuz, as you know, my summer was a far cry from "typical" this year). The ride with Teresa sounds like a lot of fun, even with the hot temps and elevation.
ReplyDeleteIt will be fun hanging out with Teresa regardless of how the ride goes. I think we can chat our way through it -- and quite possibly the miles will fly by.
DeleteI made the mistake of underestimating the heat on my bike ride Friday and quickly ran out of water. How fun that you decided to move up your century ride. Are you doing the whole 100??
ReplyDeleteI only had two bottles on me Saturday and it was not enough for 40 steamy miles. I was really having to ration toward the end. We have signed up for the century but we'll see. The time limit is not very liberal and...it's HOT again.
DeleteYou just never know what way the wind will blow that day...
ReplyDeleteWe'll hope for the best. How bad can it be? (Remind me I said that. LOL)
DeleteGlad you made ok with Irma! It definitely warmed up again around here too. Im not used to running in the humidity!
ReplyDeleteI should be used to it by now, but obviously at this point -- that will never happen. LOL.
DeleteGlad to hear you were safe from Irma. Good luck with the ride! Hopefully you'll have better weather. We got a cold front, and maybe it'll head your way.
ReplyDeleteWe've got our fingers crossed for cooler temperatures. A century ride will take all day, so whatever the high is going to top out at -- we will be riding in it!
DeleteHooray for Irma's "good" side! She was a mean mamma jamma. Wow crazy train indeed! I hope it's not too hot for you ladies! Have fun!
ReplyDeleteWe've got our fingers crossed for cooler weather, but it's looking like a warm day so far. But -- can you really trust the forecast?
DeleteIrma basically landed right on top of my town. It was a smaller hurricane then expected but it was still scary.
ReplyDeleteWe just had a lot of rain and some gusty winds. I can't imagine taking the full brunt of her. I'm glad you were safe.
DeleteIrma was not fun and now we're concerned about Maria. It's still pretty far out, but she's taking the same path as Irma so far. No, no, no! I'm exhausted from this hurricane season. I hope you have a good ride and it's not too hot!
ReplyDeleteMy husband mentioned another hurricane was coming but I haven't even looked yet. Let's hope she takes a turn out to sea!
DeleteGlad you were on the good side of Irma! The humidity returned here too with a vengeance! I hope the cooler weather returns in time for that century ride!
ReplyDeleteThere is really no end in sight (aka -- 10 day forecast) for us on daytime heat. All we can hope for is lower humidity. And I'll take that!!
DeleteGlad that the weather worked out well for you! We had a little heat wave here this week. I'm over summer and ready for fall!
ReplyDeleteI think the little taste of fall we had the previous week spoiled me into thinking summer was over. Not even close!
DeleteWow! 40 miles, no wonder you were cooked. I don't think I could ever ride 40 miles at once. Great job!
ReplyDeleteWe're going to have to ride a lot more than that next weekend. I just felt I needed to spend a few hours in the saddle one more time before the ride.
DeleteFortunately, we missed anything major here in Charlotte. The weather seemed to get hotter though. After the last few weeks, I was ready for fall and the heat is back with a vengeance!
ReplyDeleteI am ready for fall as well. I think I was spoiled with the little taste of it we had very prematurely.
DeleteWow, glad that everything worked out with you for Irma. We were not affected all in Cleveland, we've had amazingly beautiful weather. Way t go with your 40 miles. Wowwee!!!
ReplyDeleteLong bike rides are difficult in this heat. I hope I can make it to at least the metric distance.
DeleteWe are back in summer temps here too! Had a couple of 100+ days last week and all upper 90s this week! I'm soooo ready for fall and cooler weather!
ReplyDeleteI'd be happy with cool mornings. It can get as hot as it wants as I sit inside in the A/C (LOL!).
DeleteCrazy train indeed ...but let's ride! Whether it's 60 or 100, it'll be great fun!! See you soon!
ReplyDeleteI'm ready to roll...
DeleteSummer came back here too. It really really sucked at my race today. Fall can come back.
ReplyDeleteI have to admit I'm still toying with the idea of an ultra after MCM...
Might as well, right? Your endurance will already be close.
DeleteWow! Have fun and good luck on your century ride! Glad you weren't affected by Irma!
ReplyDeleteWe'll have fun. You don't really race these things. Finishing is winning!
DeleteYour selfie attempts on the bike turned out to be great! Brilliant shots actually! Will cross all my fingers and toes for cooler weather for that ride!
ReplyDeleteI'm usually as happy with my failed pictures as I am the correct ones. You never know what you will capture.
DeleteI'm sure it's nothing even close to what you have had but summer came back this week here in NH too. The humidity has been disgusting! I love the warmth but the humidity can go bye-bye now.
ReplyDeleteWay down south, the warmth and humidity seem to go hand in hand. Early mornings are the worst.
DeleteI hope you guys have good weather for your ride! And good luck with that elevation!
ReplyDeleteWe had such beautiful weather for weeks -- I would've rather struggled through more of the humidity to get that nice weather for my race but it is what it is. I'm showing restraint -- haven't started the weather stalking yet. It's a week from this coming Sunday. :)
I'm trying not to think about that elevation. After all, it is spread over 100 miles. And I just can't even fathom what that will be like. I'll know soon enough.
DeleteSigh, I can't wait for hurricane season to be over...we didn't really get too much of an impact from Irma, but the weather has been a LOT warmer and humid lately, ugh! I hope you guys have a blast on the crazy train, I can't imagine all that elevation, haha!
ReplyDeleteI hope that also means we get to enjoy 4800 feet of downhill. I plan to coast (rest) as much as possible!
DeleteOur summer returned with a vengeance, too. It was crazy hot and humid this week!!! Hopefully you get nice weather for your ride. So excited for you guys!
ReplyDeleteI'm very glad I'll have someone by my side for this. I'm not sure I could tackle this alone. Teresa and I will know everything there is to know after 100 miles. HA.
DeleteWe had fall briefly and now we have summer. Crazy weather.
ReplyDeleteExcited to hear about your upcoming bike ride...100 miles!!!!!!!!!!!! Whoa!
Crazy train? I was going to run long and then wound up running a half marathon in crazy humidity. Thought I would die. Not used to that up in the NE!!!!
Bummed. They won't let me take off Dec 1 from work. Can't do PCM. See you in Vegas. Maybe next year....
Sorry to hear about PCB. That one is hard to plan since it falls so late in the year. Vegas should be a blast.
DeleteI feel like we got teased with awesome Fall weather and then the heat and humidity came back with a vengeance. So not happy about that lol
ReplyDeleteI hope the hot weather will be gone before you run your marathon!
DeleteGood luck with your century ride!! I am loving some of the cooler weather we have been getting off and on lately...cool weather, perfect running weather! I won't be able to keep my running shoes off!
ReplyDeleteCool weather is awesome for running. If it would just show up again...
DeleteWhat a ride! 40 miles under perfect weather conditions is tough, let alone what you faced. Way to go!
ReplyDeleteI'm afraid we will have tough conditions for our century ride. I can only hope it is overcast. That should help a little.
DeleteGood luck with that century ride! Fingers crossed for better weather for you :) Summer returned with a vengeance here too.
ReplyDeleteWe've got everything crossed hoping for a little reprieve from the heat and humidity!
DeleteSummer finally left us last week. Hope fall decides to show up for your ride!
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, no fall weather for this ride. Maybe the next one!
DeleteGood luck with the century ride! What an amazing accomplishment. It was fall weather here in Minneapolis but its back to 90+ degrees by the weekend (of course, just in time for the long run :) )
ReplyDeleteIsn't that always the way? The good weather always seems to hit during the week!
DeleteIrma definitely affected my training- had to miss a day of running and had two races postponed. BUT, if that's all the affects of a hurricane I deal with this year, then I am a lucky lady because so many people lost so much. Besides, I needed an extra day of rest last week anyway.
ReplyDeleteGood luck with that bike ride... that elevation gain sounds brutal! I know it's over a course of a lot of miles, but still. The heat is still on here but we have had a few slightly cooler days at least.
I hope the US is finished with hurricane season and Maria stays well to the East.
DeleteI boarded the crazy train with climbing 110 flights of stairs, I know it seems like a good idea until the few days after! It's what we do though so just do it! :) Enjoy the ride !
ReplyDeleteYep, that was pretty crazy. It sounded like a great event though.
DeleteI definitely felt like I was on the crazy train trying to run a half on Sunday in the crazy humidity.. I'm ready for fall!
ReplyDeleteHa! That sounds like something I would do. I'm drinking all the PSLs I can trying to hurry it along.
DeleteWe were not affected by Irma in Ohio, but we did enjoy some cooler weather. Sadly this weekend it's going to be up near 90 again, and we are going camping. I highly prefer cool weather camping! At least the air conditioning in the camper will keep us comfortable.
ReplyDeleteThank goodness for the AC! Camping sounds like fun.
DeleteGood to hear you weren't affected by Irma much! Good luck on your century ride! Hoping for cool weather for you guys!
ReplyDeleteWe definitely breathed a sigh of relief over Irma, although others were not as lucky. Fingers crossed for a great ride!
DeleteWhat was with that return to summer!? I am so ready for fall!! And happy to hear that Irma didn't affect you much. Such a terrible storm.
ReplyDeleteI usually doesn't feel like fall here until late October. But the little early tease we received got our hopes up!
DeleteSo happy you didn't get any fallout from Irma, I'm so over summer right now :-) Good luck on the century ride... such a pretty country side there... my cousin lived in that area a few years back.
ReplyDeleteIt definitely should be a rural part of the state. We are hoping for little traffic and lots of shade. I'm sure we'll see a lot of cows, barns and farmland.
DeleteI have no idea what 4800 feet of elevation gain will feel like. I will soon know, however. LOL
ReplyDeleteOoh! I'm excited to see how your ride goes. :) Boarding the crazy train can be fun sometimes. Glad to hear you stayed on the good side of Irma.
ReplyDeleteOh, it got even crazier! We switched rides. LOL.
