This week started off watching Hurricane Irma slowly make her way north. I had added an extra run last Sunday knowing we'd have a few days of rainy weather. Thankfully we stayed on her "good" side, but it wasn't until Wednesday morning that I got out for a run. Also shaping up to be our coolest morning of the week, I chose a tempo run.
And then our summer weather returned with a vengeance. Friday's and Sunday's runs were in the soul searching, pace humbling humidity. After three hours, Saturday's 40 mile bike ride had me completed cooked. There was no breeze and little shade.

Earlier in the week this popped into my mailbox from Active.com; a century ride that was not even on my radar. You may remember, Teresa and I were planning on an October ride. After trying to schedule this for almost a year, not being able to coordinate dates, and wanting lately to "just get 'er done" going ahead with it next weekend seemed like the obvious choice All aboard the crazy train...
We can only hope for cooler weather {probably not going to happen} or at least overcast skies. Oh, did I mention the elevation gain on this ride is in excess of 4800 feet? All aboard the crazy train...

I must admit I've gotten myself nervous over the whole ride thing. I hope those hills are as tough as I'm fearing.
DeleteWe had a tiny taste of your southern weather the past few days (and I was ever grateful for it...cuz, as you know, my summer was a far cry from "typical" this year). The ride with Teresa sounds like a lot of fun, even with the hot temps and elevation.
ReplyDeleteIt will be fun hanging out with Teresa regardless of how the ride goes. I think we can chat our way through it -- and quite possibly the miles will fly by.
DeleteI made the mistake of underestimating the heat on my bike ride Friday and quickly ran out of water. How fun that you decided to move up your century ride. Are you doing the whole 100??
ReplyDeleteI only had two bottles on me Saturday and it was not enough for 40 steamy miles. I was really having to ration toward the end. We have signed up for the century but we'll see. The time limit is not very liberal and...it's HOT again.

DeleteGlad you made ok with Irma! It definitely warmed up again around here too. Im not used to running in the humidity!

ReplyDeleteWe've got our fingers crossed for cooler temperatures. A century ride will take all day, so whatever the high is going to top out at -- we will be riding in it!

ReplyDeleteWe've got our fingers crossed for cooler weather, but it's looking like a warm day so far. But -- can you really trust the forecast?
DeleteIrma basically landed right on top of my town. It was a smaller hurricane then expected but it was still scary.
ReplyDeleteWe just had a lot of rain and some gusty winds. I can't imagine taking the full brunt of her. I'm glad you were safe.
DeleteIrma was not fun and now we're concerned about Maria. It's still pretty far out, but she's taking the same path as Irma so far. No, no, no! I'm exhausted from this hurricane season. I hope you have a good ride and it's not too hot!
ReplyDeleteMy husband mentioned another hurricane was coming but I haven't even looked yet. Let's hope she takes a turn out to sea!

ReplyDeleteThere is really no end in sight (aka -- 10 day forecast) for us on daytime heat. All we can hope for is lower humidity. And I'll take that!!

DeleteWow! 40 miles, no wonder you were cooked. I don't think I could ever ride 40 miles at once. Great job!
ReplyDeleteWe're going to have to ride a lot more than that next weekend. I just felt I needed to spend a few hours in the saddle one more time before the ride.
DeleteFortunately, we missed anything major here in Charlotte. The weather seemed to get hotter though. After the last few weeks, I was ready for fall and the heat is back with a vengeance!

DeleteWow, glad that everything worked out with you for Irma. We were not affected all in Cleveland, we've had amazingly beautiful weather. Way t go with your 40 miles. Wowwee!!!

DeleteWe are back in summer temps here too! Had a couple of 100+ days last week and all upper 90s this week! I'm soooo ready for fall and cooler weather!
ReplyDeleteI'd be happy with cool mornings. It can get as hot as it wants as I sit inside in the A/C (LOL!).

DeleteI'm sure it's nothing even close to what you have had but summer came back this week here in NH too. The humidity has been disgusting! I love the warmth but the humidity can go bye-bye now.
ReplyDeleteWay down south, the warmth and humidity seem to go hand in hand. Early mornings are the worst.

ReplyDeleteWe had such beautiful weather for weeks -- I would've rather struggled through more of the humidity to get that nice weather for my race but it is what it is. I'm showing restraint -- haven't started the weather stalking yet. It's a week from this coming Sunday. :)
I'm trying not to think about that elevation. After all, it is spread over 100 miles. And I just can't even fathom what that will be like. I'll know soon enough.
DeleteSigh, I can't wait for hurricane season to be over...we didn't really get too much of an impact from Irma, but the weather has been a LOT warmer and humid lately, ugh! I hope you guys have a blast on the crazy train, I can't imagine all that elevation, haha!

Crazy train? I was going to run long and then wound up running a half marathon in crazy humidity. Thought I would die. Not used to that up in the NE!!!!
Bummed. They won't let me take off Dec 1 from work. Can't do PCM. See you in Vegas. Maybe next year....
Sorry to hear about PCB. That one is hard to plan since it falls so late in the year. Vegas should be a blast.

ReplyDeleteI'm afraid we will have tough conditions for our century ride. I can only hope it is overcast. That should help a little.

DeleteGood luck with the century ride! What an amazing accomplishment. It was fall weather here in Minneapolis but its back to 90+ degrees by the weekend (of course, just in time for the long run :) )

DeleteIrma definitely affected my training- had to miss a day of running and had two races postponed. BUT, if that's all the affects of a hurricane I deal with this year, then I am a lucky lady because so many people lost so much. Besides, I needed an extra day of rest last week anyway.
ReplyDeleteGood luck with that bike ride... that elevation gain sounds brutal! I know it's over a course of a lot of miles, but still. The heat is still on here but we have had a few slightly cooler days at least.
I hope the US is finished with hurricane season and Maria stays well to the East.
DeleteI boarded the crazy train with climbing 110 flights of stairs, I know it seems like a good idea until the few days after! It's what we do though so just do it! :) Enjoy the ride !

DeleteWe were not affected by Irma in Ohio, but we did enjoy some cooler weather. Sadly this weekend it's going to be up near 90 again, and we are going camping. I highly prefer cool weather camping! At least the air conditioning in the camper will keep us comfortable.

ReplyDeleteIt definitely should be a rural part of the state. We are hoping for little traffic and lots of shade. I'm sure we'll see a lot of cows, barns and farmland.
