My body is definitely feeling the affects from four weeks of increased training mileage. After pulling the plug on the Rock N Roll Las Vegas Half Marathon, my goal was to complete another double digit run this weekend (I succeeded!).  I will taper this upcoming week while possibly running the Battleship 12k in Mobile and hopefully feel good enough to run the Soldier Half Marathon the following weekend.

This ghost was HUGE!

My weekday runs were completed after work.  I've been struggling with getting out of bed for my dark early miles and hope the time change will help. My evening Halloween run was one of hard effort but quite enjoyable as all the decorations were out, inflated, lighted and ready for the kids to Trick or Treat.

I didn't know Chick-Fil-A had a girl cow!
Saturday, I continued my quest to run 5k races to help improve my overall speed.  This weekend's selection was the Cow Patty Trot.  This race was once well attended but not having the event for a few years took a toll on their participants.  A mere handful of people showed up and thus I won overall female.  My time was not speedy (3 minutes slower than my best at this race), but I did manage one mile that started with an 8...barely.  It's been a while so I'll take that as a victory in itself.  I could feel the high humidity in the air and the last mile was all uphill.  It took everything I had to not let the 2nd place female overtake me.  After the race, she thanked me for pacing her to her fastest time ever.  That made my day. Even when you think you are not at your best, others are still watching.

That would be a cow bell award!

Sunday morning's double digit run was summer like.  Per usual, I put my watch on its heart rate screen and ignored my pace.  I felt pretty strong until mile 10 and that's when it got tough.  It was just so darned hot!  But, I was pleased to get 12 miles under my belt.  I'm so happy I remembered to DVR the New York City Marathon before my run.  Shalane's win was incredible.

And that's a wrap!

Have you ever won an "unusual" award?   What?

Did you watch the NYC Marathon?

What's next on your schedule?

  1. You may recall, almost two years ago (while on a short vacay in Florida), I won overall master...kind of by default, because the two other gals got "bumped" to first and second overall women (they should have been 1st & 2nd Masters, IMO). And my reward was an aviator scarf (with the event's logo silk screened on it). All the AG winners got medals, though, and I was annoyed. I'd rather receive a medal than a scarf. LOL Congrats on your victory! I agree...even when you're not at your "best," others are impressed and would gladly trade places.

    1. That's odd they did medals for AG winners and scarves for overall, etc. From what I understand from our running club, the masters awards aren't determined until after the overall people have been determined. So, really they weren't bumped. They were just overall winners.

  5. Great job this week! That skirt is so cute! Where did you get it? I did catch the NYC Marathon on the afternoon replay. So happy for Shalane. That was amazing!

  6. That's awesome you won first female AND pushed someone to do their very best. I watched Shalane's win on youtube and had a good ugly cry!

  7. Congrats on the win! Looks like a fun race. Heck anything with a cow patty in it has to be right? Crazy it's still so darn hot! I think we're in for a mild winter. Weirdest prize I ever got at a race was cold, hard cash. Does that make me a pro?? We'll miss you this weekend!

    1. If it makes you a pro, them I'm one too. LOL. I've also won cash on a few occasions!

  8. That's awesome, and your 8-something mile! I loved running around my neighborhood seeing the Halloween decorations. Makes me wonder what the Christmas lights will look like.

    1. Oh, I love running during Christmas. I really appreciate the houses who leave their lights on all night for me to enjoy on my pre-dawn runs.

  9. Congrats on getting overall female. That's awesome. Once after I pushed myself during a 5k, a woman came up to me and thanked me for helping to push herself. She said she tried to catch me, but just couldn't. That totally made my day, so I totally get what you're saying.

    1. It is very nice to get a compliment like that! So, I try to remember to thank anyone that I use to help me through a race too.

  10. Congrats on your first place female overall win! That cow bell is the perfect award, too. I've won two cow bell age group awards at the Leesburg 20K where we run through farms so they have a cow theme on their shirts and medals. Having grown up on a dairy farm, I love it!

    Thanks for the linkup!

  12. When it comes to running, I've never won any award at all & most likely never will. Congrats on winning -- slower or not, that had to feel good!

I have a 15k next weekend. Would you believe snow is in the forecast? It's a week away so I'm assuming/praying that will change. I also don't anticipate any double digit runs for many, many months!

    1. Judy, I predict you will win a running award!! Wow. Snow! It's been warm again this week. We're hoping for a weekend cool down.

  13. Congrats - what a fun award! And wow, I can't believe your weather. It's been so rainy here and today we had severe storms and a tornado watch so it was hard to be active outside. I definitely ned a treadmill! I also watched the NYC marathon later in the day and got choked up watching Shalane. Woowoo!

    1. That's the south for you. It can never decide what season it is. Shalane made me misty-eyed for sure!

  14. Upping my miles lately has left me feeling a little more tired too. This aging this is no fun! Sounds like you found some fun races to add into your schedule. I will be back to the WW next week

    1. No, this aging is not fun. Hopefully my body will adjust to the mileage soon. After all, I've given it plenty of rest this year. LOL.

  16. Awesome! Congrats on 1st overall female! That's cool you helped pace the 2nd place finisher to a PR! I didn't get a chance to watch the marathon on TV due to work but read all about it. So awesome she won!

    1. My time was definitely not worthy of an OA award but it felt nice to help the other lady to a PR.

  17. Nice work lady!!! And it's always nice when you can help someone out even though you are trying to beat them. Lol! I'm still riding the runner's high from watching Shalane yesterday. So incredible!

  18. Congrats on your win! Thats an awesome award. I wasn't able to watch the race yesterday but read all about it and now Im disappointed I missed it.

  19. Congrats on the first place win - any win has got to feel good, and that's really nice of the second place woman for telling you that! :)

  21. I can't think of a single unusual award that I've won - so I am continually on the hunt for race that advertise as such. I won a mug once which I enjoyed, but not quite unusual. LOVE THE COWBELL. And congrats on first overall female!

  22. So exciting winning a race!!!!!!! I once came in 2nd woman abut in a VERY small race.

I have a half weekend and will MISS you!!!!!!

I watched the NYC Marathon....so happy for Shalane!!

I've won a $50 gift card to a restaurant, a bottle of champagne, hat, socks, gloves - that's about it.

  23. Ack! My comment didn't show up... if it's in spam and this is a second comment, disregard. ;)

Anyways -- CONGRATS! That's awesome news. And how fun is it to being pacing someone unknowingly?? Woohoo!!

  24. Great job on the 5k! And that's so cool that the second woman came up to thank you :) My weekday runs last week were after work too. I'm hoping the time change will help get morning runs in this week :)

  25. UGH, it's November - it seems so unfair that we're still posting about how the high temperature is making our runs tough! Congratulations on the race - I LOVE the cow bell! And I love when people come up after the race (or even during) - I had one woman tell me that my costume kept her going for the few miles that she was behind me at Disneyland. It felt great!

  26. Congrats on winning! I've yet to win anything running related.
I didn't get to watch the NYC marathon but loving all the coverage of Shalene!

  27. Congrats on your win and pacing someone to her best! That's a cool feeling. Cow Patty Trot is a great name for a race. ;) I enjoyed watching NYC yesterday. I turned it on when the women were nearing mile 18 (mountain time + I'm a lazy person). Shalane was amazing. So fun to watch!

  28. Congrats on the overall win! I struggled getting out of bed last week too... hopefully this week will be better.

  29. I've also been struggling with the motivation to get out when it's so dark in the mornings. And it's cold, which I longed for all summer, but now that it's here I just want to stay under the warm covers. Also hoping the time change makes its better. Nice that you won a race!!! Congrats!!!

  30. I wish I could watch Shalane’s win. I’ve only seen clips of the finish and love her happiness! Congrats on your win too!!

  31. We used to have a "pi day" race - 3.14 miles on March 14, and the winner is the time closest to 31:40. The awards are always pi/pie themed, like a pie ornament or a wooden pi - and of course, edible pie. Our dog has paced both me and my husband to wins in this race - turns out she is the best pacer if you need 10 minute miles!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Congrats on 1st overall female!!! So awesome! I didn't watch Shalane's win live but I did see the full clip later! So happy she won! She's amazing!

    ReplyDelete
  33. I love the cowbell award! The shirt is cute too- congratulations on a great race and the win. And you're so right- you never know who you may be helping on the race course. I also agree that racing a lot of 5Ks is a good way to work on speed for those of us who mostly run longer events like half marathons.

    ReplyDelete
  34. great job getting in your running in this unseasonably warm fall, the 5k an the long run too! congrats on the OA win as well. I love the cowbell! I think the strangest awards I have won include a paddle ball racket, a chocolate covered easter egg,a doggie bag filled with dog related items..oh and also a severed arm (I was second OA at a Halloween rundead 5k where you get chased by zombies-best race ever!!!)
I hope you are able to get in the rest of the races you have planned this fall btw!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Congratulations on your win and that award is SO fun! Running on Halloween evening would have been a really fun way to take in all of the cute kid costumes and decorations :) I've only watched Shalane's last victory stretch a few times - that was certainly amazing!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Congrats on the awesome race and on winning an award, HoHo! That award seems so unique, and I must admit I feel a bit jealous. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  37. I won best manners at my school's end-of-year faculty awards a couple of years ago! That might be one of the stranger awards I've won.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I won an artisan made glass medal once from a beach race. To this day, it's still my favorite medal (and one of my favorite races). Congrats on your win!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Shalane's race was so incredible! My husband and I were running NYC, so we didn't know she had won until we were back at our hotel much later in the day and watching the reply. So inspiring!
