Five Rock N Roll Runfessions

It's the last Friday of the month and you know what that means...

It's time for Runfessions!  Let's get right to it.

I usually don't pick up coins while running.  But dollar bills, now that's a different story.  Anyway, you know the saying "See a penny, pick it up..."?  I saw a shiny penny on heads recently and declared it would be my lucky charm for RnR Chicago!  With no pocket, I held on to that it as of my life depended on it, or at least as if my race results did.  When I arrived safely home with it I runfess I took that penny and  ...  have no clue what I did with it.

Speaking of luck, I've always heard it's good luck if a bird poops on you.  Apparently, the more birds  the better.  Well, with perfectly executed choreography a few of them let it go as Marcia, Wendy and I were walking to the race start.  The noxious liquid hit the sidewalk in front of us and splattered on Wendy.  I swear when we looked up, they were smirking.  She went on to have a great race. I runfess, I hope next time the birds will crap on me...with a shiny penny in my pocket.

While in Chicago, I was fortunate to attend two brunches and connect with many wonderful bloggers; most of whom I had never met in person.  I felt like I already knew them.  That part was actually kinda weird.  "It's so great to see you again!  Oh wait, we've never met!"  I runfess, there were so many of us it was hard to spend quality time with any one lady.

Kim and I trying out our Price Is Right modeling skills.

I runfess, I may have let a few choice words fly.  As I was running across the State Street bridge -- just before the iconic Chicago Theater -- WHAM!  A heavy, wet bundle of newspapers smacked the pavement between myself and several young girls.  They screamed.  I cursed.  I spent a while pondering how that happened.  Did someone throw them from a high rise?  Did a drone drop them from the sky?  They landed with such force they had to have fallen a long way.  None of my theories made sense.  Oh, wait...it must have been those pesky pigeons.

This is not the best pre-race selfie.  But if you could have smelled the putrid gentlemen standing right in front of us, you'd understand how difficult it was for us to smile and not breathe.  We couldn't let those fumes get inside our mouths!  It smelled as if they decided to forego the porta-potty and poop like the pigeons.  I runfess it was necessary to squat down and retie my shoe.

What would you like to runfess?

  1. Omg the pigeon thing was too crazy. I swear THEY WERE smirking!! I was treated to some of that malodorous aroma during the 10k. One would think the rain would have rinsed that but yikes! Thanks for linking. And for letting me share your chair for a minute at brunch! <3

  2. You know, I did smell several nasty "aromas" also. I'm not a coffee drinker, but I realize it's a necessary evil for a lot of runners...but the smell of stale coffee breath (as one huffs and puffs merrily along running) resembles that of moth balls LOL (at least that's the closest comparison I could come up with). And, Vanna White has got NOTHING on you and I ;-)

    1. Ha! You are right. We look more like letter turners. As much as I love coffee, I agree with your stale breath assessment. I usually chase my coffee with water. (wink)

  3. It was hard to get one and one time with everyone! That just means we HAVE to do it again soon. Too funny on the bird poop :)

  4. I had a similar experience with the penny. I held on to it during my run but then I lost it.I had a good race so maybe I held on to the penny long enough.

Hope I can attend the next blogger reunion.

    1. Oddly, this didn't start out as a blogger reunion. The Rock N Bloggers all chose Chicago and I just horned in on it. LOL.

    1. Now I'm singing that song!

Every time it rains, it rains pennies from heaven
Don't you know each cloud contains pennies from heaven?

  6. I agree that it was hard to get one on one time with everyone - we should do breakout sessions next time, LOL.

So funny about the bird! The last time a bird pooped on me was in Chicago a few years ago - funny right?

  7. Every time I have a clean car, I swear those darn pigeons have radar. "Clear car! Go go go!"

    1. The man that comes by our office to wash cars was appalled yesterday at the amount of bird poop on my car! LOL.

  8. I've never heard of bird poop being good luck! I'd prefer the penny.

  10. I have yet to be annointed by a bird -- and we have a nest right over our front door -- of course we almost never go in or out that way. Poor Wendy! Or maybe lucky Wendy?

I'm much better in small groups than in big crowds. And even then . . . I can be pretty quiet. It would've been cool, though. Oh wait, I actually did have my own small group . . . it's part of why I signed up for that particular race.

That newspaper thing must've been really disconcerting.

    1. I haven't anointed either. My DIL was while we were doing a carriage ride in NYC. So funny! But, I'm sure not for her. Nobody I've talked to about the newspapers have any idea how/why they fell from above. They SLAMMED into the pavement. So grateful it wasn't my head.

  11. There were definitely some strong aromas going on in those corrals - what was that about?!? I do wish we'd had more time to chat - just means it's time to plan the next get together ;)

  12. Bird poop AND a lucky penny??? It's amazing that you did not win the race outright! Looks like you had a great time.

    1. Maybe two lucky items cancel each other out? LOL

  13. I have never been pooped on! BUT, birds poop all over my front stoop and my back porch. Why!? There are so many other places to poop...

    1. I sported so much bird poop on my car this week. Everyone commented on it. I think the birds were sick or something.

  14. Oh no, that's awful about Wendy getting hit by the bird poop. That happened to me once when I was volunteering at a race. The falling newspapers could have been dangerous. Glad they didn't hit anyone.

  15. Well I've never heard about being pooped on by a bird being lucky...I'll skip that one, thanks! It sounds like you were dodging all kinds of things last weekend - poop, stinkpots, flying newspapers. It sure makes for some interesting memories!

    1. Thankfully, most of my memories from the weekend are warm and fuzzy ones. It was wonderful to meet you!

  16. It sounds like you all had so much fun in Chicago! It's been awhile since I've been pooped on by a bird (I think I was around 10 or 11). Not sure I want to endure that again even though it is supposed to be good luck!

    1. When you think about it, it’s amazing we aren’t pooped on more often by birds. There’s so many flying around.

  17. Oh man. That's a lot of poop in Chicago! I'm glad you had fun, though. And thank goodness those papers didn't fall on your head!! That's just crazy!

There have been races where I worry that I am that stinky person. ;-)
