A New Normal (WW # 160)

I feel like my life has been crazy lately!  The nest might be empty, but there is little time to dwell on that. Trying to stop the madness, this week marked my attempt to settle into a normal routine...whatever that might look like these days.

Monday is my usual pre-hab day.  My typical routine consists of various exercises, mostly lower body, of 350-380 reps on each side.  It takes 30 minutes to complete.  I repeated this routine again on Thursday.  As part of my new normal, I'd like to do these twice weekly. I admit, many weeks lately I've only done it once.   And umm...sometimes nonce. 


Tuesday morning brought my first run of the week.  It was super steamy and I took it easy for 5.5 miles.  On Friday, I did another 5.1 miles; this time my favorite -- a progression run.  The dew point had dropped and I didn't want to  miss out on the opportunity to breathe the drier air and push my pace.  Sadly, it didn't feel much different.  I still sweated.  Buckets.   My pace?  Not very pushed.




Wednesday night has always been my favorite for cross training.  I increased my indoor cycling to 50 minutes while jamming to my normal 70's funk.  I'm always happy when I can keep my heart rate in the 140's!  For me, it is very difficult to do this on a bike.  Wearing a heart rate monitor in a must for keeping track of it.



I had Sanity's front tire repaired this week.  She now has a Gator Skin tire [calm down, not real gator!].  I planned to ride outside Saturday morning but it was disgustingly hot and humid.  Plus, I had a lot to do around the house.  It instead became a rest day; if you call cleaning out the closets "rest".  I must have gone up and down our staircases a hundred times.



Sunday I hit the road relatively early and ran another 6.3 miles.  This brought my total to 16.9 miles in three runs.  I hope to be on the lake later this afternoon enjoying a few week-ending ski sprays.

With the running, cycling, water skiing and two pre-hab sessions, I'm pleased with how my "normal" week went down.  Plus, I got a lot done around the house.  Normal for the win!

  1. Once we take Matthew to school, that's going to be my workout for the fall. We have so much stuff accumulated over the years, it's ridiculous. I"m kind of dreading it, actually.

    I missed out on some prehab last week too. It's just too busy!

    1. Living in this house for 19 years, it is overwhelming how much cleaning out and organizing I need to do. It will definitely keep me busy...if I can stick to it.

    1. I do 4-5 of the same exercises (learned in physical therapy a few years ago) and then rotate a couple of different exercises in and out just so I don't do the exact same thing each time. I throw some core stuff in for good measure. I used to do arms too, but my left elbow is on sabbatical.

  4. 350 reps? That's intense! Whatever works.

    My week definitely wasn't normal, but hey, I only ran 3 times. :)

    I am probably going to sign up for a sept half when I get home, have another in oct & then you can pretty much stick a fork in me!

    2. I know, 350 does sound like a lot. But when you do 40 (or 50) reps of one exercise, they add up very quickly.

  5. My week was definitely not normal! I was on "vacation," but we were back in our home town visiting family and friends and those weeks are always crazy with zero consistency to the schedule. Hopefully, this week will be a little more "normal" now that we're back home. Sounds like your new normal is pretty nice!

    1. Getting off routine is fun for a short period (like vacation). But after a while, I crave more structure and I'm ready to be back at home.

  7. This week wasn't normal for me because CARI CAME TO VISIT but then again I did the normal amount of running on most of the normal days, and three goes at volunteering, too. Sorry it's still humid there - we actually ran IN THE RAIN today; it was amazing. In two tops, too!!

    2. To be honest, for a UK runner, running in the rain isn't optional. The first summer I seriously ran outdoors was one of our wet ones, so I kind of patterned onto it, like a duckling following the farmer's wellies!

  8. Wow! My prehab routine is maybe 10 minutes. I do throw in extra exercises from time to time, but it certainly isn't 30 minutes.

    1. As learned from PT, I really take my time and do all the reps slowly. Plus, I stretch at the end which makes the time a little longer.

  9. I have to work hard to get my HR up that high on my bike. I don’t think I could sustain it. That takes hard effort and focus. I probably should spend some time cleaning out my own closets!

    1. The reason I've kept my bike inside this year is that I can sustain that heart rate on the mag trainer. Since I use cycling for cross training, that's what I want. I can't sustain it outside no matter how hard I try. I guess there's too much downhill (coasting/resting).

  10. Ahh the busyness never ends! I don't know what normal is anymore... just as I was loving marathon training and sleeping occasionally, I pulled my groin this weekend :( Crying a little inside. Keep up your great work, Holly! I will be living vicariously through your runs!

    1. I don't mind being busy. It helps take my mind off the empty nest. But, stressful/crazy/busy is a whole different ballgame that I don't really like to play.

  13. My week didn't feel very normal as I'm still trying to squeeze in some time off with the family before school begins. I'm looking forward to finding a routine again.

  15. My week felt a little normal because I returned to some of my usual running ways but it definitely was not normal. My kids were camp-less so I missed out on my usual yoga classes and wasn't able to run whenever I wanted. The new normal is kicking in this week with the return of school.

  16. I've come to respect the pre-hab exercises so I think it's wonderful you're going to aim to do them 2x a week. I also find it hard to keep my HR up on a bike, but I know that's because we are sitting and not using as many muscles as with running. I am waiting for my life to return to normal but until then lots of rehab and cross training!

    1. When I was going for treatment a few years ago, my PT wanted me doing these exercises every other day. Although, I think there were fewer reps at the time.

  19. Great job with the pre-hab! Sounds like a good idea. Cleaning is another workout in itself especially when stairs are involved.

  20. I need a pre-hab routine - I have a short hip-strengthening workout that I try to do at least once a day, but it doesn't always happen... I totally vote that cleaning counts at a workout!

  22. We've had several new normals along the way as our children have grown; I think the hardest one was when our oldest moved to the other side of the country. It sure makes you figure out how to adapt, and it's all good. But weird.

  24. Holly - It's crazy hot and humid here today, but yesterday I was able to get a good bike ride in. Sanity is the name of your bicycle, right? Or is it your bike riding group? Either way, it's a good name.

    1. Yes, I named my bike Sanity. She came into my life after a fractured foot and ensuing Chicago Marathon DNS. She's the only thing that kept me sane at the time.

  25. I hear you- summer is always packed and just flies by. And those prehab exercises are so hard to get in! I'm more consistent lately since having knee issues but it's so easy to fall off the wagon.

  27. That prehab sounds intense! I've been working hard to make my PT exercises more of a routine, but if I didn't have my training journal, I think I'd be much less consistent!

    My weeks have been SO busy, so exhausting...and it seems like it's not ending any time soon.

  28. New tires can be pretty glamorous!

    It was as normal a week as it could be, I guess. Our longer races dont' start until November/December around here, so holding out a little bit longer before the big mileage increase.

  29. I need to be better about pre-hab - some weeks I do it, other weeks I skip it, and I know consistency is most effective. Cleaning totally counts as a workout, especially if there are stairs involved!

  31. My week started normally, but wrapped up with some major stomach issues that have sidelined me for the last couple of days. Hoping to try a short and easy run tomorrow morning and be totally back at it in time for my run on Friday.
