Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes
Turn and face the strange
Ch-ch-changes
Don't want to be a richer man

There's gonna have to be a different man
Time may change me
But I can't trace time

It's definitely been a week of changes. The first? Our Weekly Wrap badge. [Also, let me take a moment to thank Wendy for my Slalom Water Ski Girl T-shirt. LOVE.IT.] Feel free to use the new badge or the old one. Seriously, we aren't that picky.
I began this week exhausted from two back to back days of water skiing, accumulating probably over 50 miles. Although I did my typical Monday pre-hab, it wasn't until Wednesday that I felt like hitting the streets for a 4.7 mile easy morning run. And by easy, I mean slow. We are still experiencing those mid 70's just-go-ahead-and-skip-your-run dew points.
I finally found my Sanity this week...my bike, that is, for some cross training Thursday night. I turned on her disco lights and blared 70's music throughout the house. What a good sweat! Her front tire will not stay inflated. I guess she's been changing too. At least she can stay on the trainer until I can get her road ready. Dare I try to change that tire myself?
Let's boogie down, Sanity! |
After totally bailing on my planned Friday morning run -- opting instead for the comfort of my bed -- I hopped into the pool later that night for pool running. Well, after it stopped raining that is. Again, I cranked up the tunes on the patio and had a lovely sweat-without-the-sweat 40 minute session. Why haven't I been doing this all summer? Oh yeah, I remember. Rain! The water was warm and it felt peaceful to swim in the dark.
...grabbed a life vest that was waayyy too big... |
I
did get one more run in over the weekend; 4.6 miles in the most humid conditions to date
this year. Two short runs was not exactly what I planned for the week. But with the extra cross training, I don't feel too bad about it. After all, I'm not training for anything right now. With our heavy rains, I didn't go water skiing Saturday [cue deflating balloon noise]. But we did go to look at a few lake properties, which was very interesting to say the least.
In other news, I had a big ol' aging reality check this week. After a routine bone scan, I was told I have Osteopenia...which is basically the precursor to Osteoporosis. Unfortunately, my body is changing and not for the better. I already take Calcium and Vitamin D supplements in addition to consuming plenty of dairy so I was a little shocked. I've got to decide whether to take the prescribed Boniva. The side effects sound awful. Anybody out there take this medication?
On the home front, we spent Sunday moving our youngest son away to college. We can now officially call ourselves Empty Nesters!
Turn and face the strange, ch-ch-ch changes...
Don't forget! In honor of our Third Anniversary,
we'll be hosting a giveaway for those who link up next weekend!
we'll be hosting a giveaway for those who link up next weekend!
And that's a wrap! |
We take our daughter next weekend....and I'm dragging my heels thinking about it. She doesn't have class on Fridays, though, and wants to come home to work on Fridays at the daycare center, so that will give us a smooth (?) transition to this new way of life. Sorry to hear about your diagnosis ;-(
ReplyDeleteIt's great your daughter is close enough to come home every week. Our youngest is the farthest away so I don't expect many visits. That's not saying I won't go there for a visit! (wink)
DeleteI love the lights on your bike! I'm enjoying the ways you're finding to cross train. A workout is a workout. It doesn't always have to be running!
ReplyDeleteI've find my body does better when I include some pretty intensive cross training like cycling. I'm trying to get back in the habit.
DeleteSat it was so horribly humid we decided to run Sunday. So glad -- today wasn't too bad.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry about the bone density issues. I haven't had a scan yet, but I do know a couple of women who have issues & I know they take stuff. I'm not much for most medicines myself.
Two years ago I had a scan that was normal. That scan was reviewed and scored by a real person. This time, the machine scored it. I wonder if that has anything to do with it?
DeleteI'm just so sorry about your diagnosis. So we've each got our old lady diagnoses. Just so you know, there's no one I'd rather go through old age with. Let's keep defying expectation!
ReplyDeleteWe'll go down kicking and screaming! And water skiing, and kayaking, and cannon-balling, and shenaniganing...
DeleteWow, that's a lot of changes. I like the new badge -- love your smiling faces! I'll have to remember to grab it for next week. Another friend was just talking about Boniva. I haven't read up on it, but it sounds like one of those drugs that you really have to weigh the side effects. Have you had symptoms of osteopenia, or is it something that you don't have symptoms of until you break something?
ReplyDeleteAfter my first foot stress fracture, my doc ordered a bone scan since a stress fracture is a tell-tale sign. That test was normal. I had another foot fracture after that and recovered quickly. It was just time to have another scan. I don't think you have symptoms. Just just begin breaking bones.
DeleteI'm sorry to hear about your osteopenia. I've had bone scans twice - so far so good, but I do have a family history of bone loss.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the linkup!
I remember my Mom had Osteoporis in her 70s and took medication for it. But, I don't know when it started. She did not break any bones. I do know that.
DeleteSo I was diagnosed with Osteopenia last year after my stress fracture. It was pretty rough to hear at age 39 that you have an old lady diagnosis. :) I'm not taking anything other than Vitamin D and Calcium right now so I can't offer any input on Boniva. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteMy first bone scan after a stress fracture was normal. But, it was also a different type of test; being read by a human. This scan was scored by the machine and computer. I wonder if that makes a difference. It's scary to know it changed in two years time!
DeleteI love that you have disco lights on your bike. If that doesn't make a workout fun, I don't know what will!
ReplyDeleteAlso, I'm loving the new WW badge. Such a fun photo both of you.
I'm so sorry to hear about your Osteopenia diagnosis :( I know that must have been a huge shock for you. I've never heard of that medication before, but if I do, I will let you know!
These lights really look super cool on a dark early morning run! There is no doubt that everyone can definitely see me!
DeleteI think I am going to need those disco lights on my bike! How fun are those?
ReplyDeleteYou definitely need these lights. There are solid or multi colors (I have solid green on the back tire). My sister gave them to me when I was riding on early dark mornings a couple of years ago.
DeleteDisco light on your bike are awesome! Bringing the party to the workout. I like the new badge too!
ReplyDeleteWe might as well have fun with our workouts, right?
DeleteIt sucks when the weather forces you inside, but at least you've got disco lights! And wouldn't it be nice if there was some way to know before we started a medication whether the side effects will affect us?
ReplyDeleteIt is scary. How many times have medications been prescribed and then a few years later there are ads from attorneys saying "if you took this drug...". You never know.
DeleteSo sorry to hear about your osteopenia. I haven't had a scan in a while but I was ok then.
ReplyDeleteThe weather up north was miserable. I barely moved on my runs if you can call it runs. Things will improve.
My first scan was fine. But, I decided I'd get one as often as allowed by insurance since I have had fractures. Here I am two years later with softening bones.
DeleteI can't believe you have a precursor to Osteoporosis- with how active and strong you are! That's crazy. What is someone to do to prevent it, if not what you're doing already! Gees...
ReplyDeleteI know what menopause can do to women and thought I was being proactive by taking supplements and consuming plenty of dairy products. I was surprised.
DeleteBlech sorry about the Osteopenia. That's a bummer. Do you take your Calcium and D with magnesium to maximize absorption? That's all I've got on the topic. Hooray for some quality time on Sanity and in the pool!
ReplyDeleteI'll check on the magnesium. It may already be in one of my supplements. If not, it can't hurt to add it.
DeleteI’m so sorry to hear about your diagnosis. I agree without Jessie that it’s crazy to think someone as strong and fit as you would have to worry about that!
ReplyDeleteGreat week of workouts and I love your bike setup - so cool.
I know my mother had Osteoporosis later in life. Maybe it is possible that heredity plays a factor?
DeleteI'm so sorry to hear about osteopenia. It runs in my family, so i'm doing what I can now to prevent it, but there's only so much you can do.
ReplyDeleteIndoor workouts can be lame but wow those light! How fun!
The lights do add some sparkle to an otherwise boring trainer ride!
DeleteI've been reading about a lot of empty nesters this week. I hope you adapt well to the change. Hopefully you can nip the osteopenia in the bud before it becomes osteoporosis. I've started taking a calcium gummy along with my multi vitamin but I have to say I'm not loving it and considered stopping it. This was a good thing for me to read today to remind myself not too.
ReplyDeleteMy first bone scan was actually normal but I took the supplements anyway. I thought I was being proactive!
DeleteUgh, girl! I wish I had some words of wisdom for you. I hope you find some answers to help you make your decision.
ReplyDeleteIt's not that I'm anti-drugs...I know there are benefits. But, I'd prefer to achieve the same results using other methods.
DeleteIt's been several years since I've had a scan and based on those results it wouldn't surprise me if I find myself in the same bone boat as you. I was told it's fairly common in small framed women. I think I'd consider taking the Vitamin D and calcium supplements and just try to be very cautious as long as I could before taking the meds.... I just hate taking prescription meds. Although, I realize the older I get, it will be unavoidable.
ReplyDeleteLove the new badge and hope you have a better week. P.S. Lakefront property sounds like a #holottafun!!!! :)
I already take the Vitamin D and Calcium supplements even though my last bone scan was normal. I thought I was being proactive. I know at some point I will have to rely on some type of prescription medication. But now?
DeleteHope the empty nest goes well for you and you get to do all sorts of fun stuff. I'm busy worriting about my bestie, as both her and her husband's twins go off to university early Sept. And sorry about the Osteopenia, that's a scary thing, esp as you already take calcium and Vit D and obviously do a lot of weight-bearing exercise. Could they give you any other dietary tips or were they all just about the meds? An eating disordered friend and my f-i-l who has had oestrogen medicine for a health condition both take a big calcium supplementing drug (but I don;t know the name) and have a bad day afterwards but then are OK. But in both cases there's no other option. I hope you find a solution and find peace with it.
ReplyDeleteI hope I can talk my husband into some fun adventures! Unfortunately, now we have nobody to take care of the pets if we leave town. LOL.
DeleteIt sounds like perfect pool running weather! I think if I had access to a pool this summer I may have done some of that myself... but then again who knows. I'm sorry about your diagnosis! I hope you can figure out the best plan for you.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to try to do more pool running! Hopefully, I'll have at least a month before it starts cooling off.
DeletePool running seems to be the greatest invention ever...now if I could just find a pool, I'd really give it a try, lol!
ReplyDeleteWe've been so soggy here, all of the rain has been depressing...will it ever end?
I am so sorry to hear about your diagnosis - but it's good that you are now aware and take the steps needed. If you go the medication route I wish you the best!
Love your new WW logo - you ladies are so fun!
The first time I did pool running (for over two months!) I used one of our YMCAs. They open very early and that worked for me initially. When I worked my way up to over an hour, I had to switch my days around.
DeleteUgh, sorry to hear about the Osteopenia. I hope you can figure out a good plan to deal with it and prevent it from turning into osteoporosis. I love the lights on your bike, how fun!
ReplyDeleteIf I can stop the progression of bone loss, I will be a happy camper!
DeleteI like the new badge! Bummer about the osteopenia. Seems like with your running and overall fitness level that shouldn't happen. I pretty much count on my running protecting me from everything, hehehe. If my memory is correct though, blond, fair skinned women are at high risk for osteoporosis.:-( I don't know much about Boniva but will ask around.
ReplyDeleteI remember my mother taking medication for it later in her life. It could also be hereditary. I'm going to do more research before taking the prescription.
DeleteThose lights on your bike look so fun! There was a group of bikers that had their bikes decked out in lights when I was on the trail a few weeks ago...it was interesting to see them coming, blasting music and having a good ol time! I love the new pic! You gals and your water skiing :)
ReplyDeleteThe lights are so cool when I'm outside pedaling on dark streets too. There is no doubt whatsoever that I can be seen easily!!
DeleteWow, happy 3 year anniversary!! I'm sorry to hear about your osteopenia diagnosis, I sadly think it's very common in women. Hopefully if you decide to take the medication it helps!
ReplyDeleteI think it is very common too, but I wasn't expecting it at my relatively young age (you know, not in my 70s). I hope I can prevent Osteoporosis.
DeleteWe've been empty nesters for longer than I'd like to think about now - it's weird but good. But weird.
ReplyDeleteThe house has felt empty for years as the teenagers have been doing their own things. It's just official now. LOL
DeleteI'm sorry about your new diagnosis. :-( It's frustrating when you feel like you do everything right and still have issues. I hope you get it all sorted out and on the right medication soon. Empty nesters! That is a big change - bittersweet, I'm sure.
ReplyDeleteIt just one of those unfortunate age related things that none of us want to deal with.
DeleteI love the new badge! I'm going to switch it out right now!
ReplyDeleteUgh to osteo-anything. I've never heard of that medication, but I would't be thrilled with unpleasant side effects either.
I would love to try pool running - we just don't really have a pool that would be work for it. It's supposed to be so great.
I need to buy a belt for pool running. I've used one in the past at the Y and it is much easier to do wearing one of those as opposed to a vest.
DeleteI would love to try pool running! There's always kids in my community pool when I try to go though. And I don't really like swimming with kids...they are usually annoying and obnoxious when in the pool.
ReplyDeleteYes, that can be frustrating. I've dealt with that when winter pool running at the YMCA.
DeleteEmpty nesters!!! That’s exciting and I’m sure a slight shock to the system - I hope you and your hubs enjoy this new season! And I’m totally stealing that new link-up badge for next week. Love it. I’m really sorry to hear about your diagnosis and am really shocked. You are seriously the most fit super mom/grandma! How are you feeling? Do you notice symptoms? Hopefully there will be a supplement fix or something that will help you prevent it progressing.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to try a supplement before going on the medication. Since I'm in the early stages, I assume (hope) I have time to see if something else works.
DeleteJust got the news on the new badge :) Hopefully some drier weather is headed your way. I got back from Alaska yesterday and there are early fall temps at home. I was a little surprised.
ReplyDeleteI bet you enjoyed the cooler weather in Alaska! I'd really like to visit there some day.
DeleteI’m sorry to hear about the diagnosis. Even if things don’t seem so right now, just remember that things will all work out in the long run. Hugs!
ReplyDeleteI'm trying to stay positive and do what I can to prevent bone loss.
DeleteI like the new badge. Sorry to hear you have the precursor to Osteoporosis. Enjoy being empty nesters.
ReplyDeleteWe have a few things lined up that will keep us busy for a while. I think that will help with the empty nest feeling.
DeleteI'm sorry to hear about the osteopoenia - that must be a frustrating diagnosis. Hopefully whatever plan of action you take works out! That's so cool that you can just hop in your own pool and pool run. Hopefully you get better weather to enjoy that more often.
ReplyDeleteI wish our pool was heated! I'd run it year round if it was.
DeleteMy understanding is that Bisphosphates work very well post break in helping bone growth. But there are risks for sure. I too am Osteopenia and thought my running and healthy active lifestyle including calcium supplements would find it off but alas, not true. I encourage you to look up the specific weight bearing strength routines. That's my focus as meds will be a last resort for me personally. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteI appreciate the tips! I'm not going to take the prescription until absolutely necessary.
