Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes
Turn and face the strange
Ch-ch-changes
Don't want to be a richer man
Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes
Turn and face the strange
Ch-ch-changes
There's gonna have to be a different man
Time may change me
But I can't trace time

It's definitely been a week of changes.   The first?  Our Weekly Wrap badge.  [Also, let me take a moment to thank Wendy for my Slalom Water Ski Girl T-shirt.  LOVE.IT.]  Feel free to use the new badge or the old one.  Seriously, we aren't that picky.

I began this week exhausted from two back to back days of water skiing, accumulating probably over 50 miles.  Although I did my typical Monday pre-hab, it wasn't until Wednesday that I felt like hitting the streets for a 4.7 mile easy morning run.  And by easy, I mean slow.  We are still experiencing those mid 70's just-go-ahead-and-skip-your-run dew points.

I finally found my Sanity this week...my bike, that is, for some cross training Thursday night.  I turned on her disco lights and blared 70's music throughout the house.  What a good sweat!  Her front tire will not stay inflated.  I guess she's been changing too.  At least she can stay on the trainer until I can get her road ready.  Dare I try to change that tire myself?

Let's boogie down, Sanity!
After totally bailing on my planned Friday morning run -- opting instead for the comfort of my bed -- I hopped into the pool later that night for pool running.  Well, after it stopped raining that is.  Again, I cranked up the tunes on the patio and had a lovely sweat-without-the-sweat 40 minute session.  Why haven't I been doing this all summer?  Oh yeah, I remember.  Rain!  The water was warm and it felt peaceful to swim in the dark.

...grabbed a life vest that was waayyy too big...

I did get one more run in over the weekend; 4.6 miles in the most humid conditions to date this year. Two short runs was not exactly what I planned for the week.  But with the extra cross training, I don't feel too bad about it. After all, I'm not training for anything right now.  With our heavy rains, I didn't go water skiing Saturday [cue deflating balloon noise].  But we did go to look at a few lake properties, which was very interesting to say the least.

In other news, I had a big ol' aging reality check this week.  After a routine bone scan, I was told I have Osteopenia...which is basically the precursor to Osteoporosis.  Unfortunately, my body is changing and not for the better.  I already take Calcium and Vitamin D supplements in addition to consuming plenty of dairy so I was a little shocked.  I've got to decide whether to take the prescribed Boniva.  The side effects sound awful.  Anybody out there take this medication?

On the home front, we spent Sunday moving our youngest son away to college.  We can now officially call ourselves Empty Nesters!

Turn and face the strange, ch-ch-ch changes...

Don't forget!  In honor of our Third Anniversary,
we'll be hosting a giveaway for those who link up next weekend!

And that's a wrap!

Any big changes in your life recently?

  1. We take our daughter next weekend....and I'm dragging my heels thinking about it. She doesn't have class on Fridays, though, and wants to come home to work on Fridays at the daycare center, so that will give us a smooth (?) transition to this new way of life. Sorry to hear about your diagnosis ;-(

    1. It's great your daughter is close enough to come home every week. Our youngest is the farthest away so I don't expect many visits. That's not saying I won't go there for a visit! (wink)

  2. I love the lights on your bike! I'm enjoying the ways you're finding to cross train. A workout is a workout. It doesn't always have to be running!

    1. I've find my body does better when I include some pretty intensive cross training like cycling. I'm trying to get back in the habit.

  3. Sat it was so horribly humid we decided to run Sunday. So glad -- today wasn't too bad.

I'm sorry about the bone density issues. I haven't had a scan yet, but I do know a couple of women who have issues & I know they take stuff. I'm not much for most medicines myself.

    1. Two years ago I had a scan that was normal. That scan was reviewed and scored by a real person. This time, the machine scored it. I wonder if that has anything to do with it?

  4. I'm just so sorry about your diagnosis. So we've each got our old lady diagnoses. Just so you know, there's no one I'd rather go through old age with. Let's keep defying expectation!

  5. Wow, that's a lot of changes. I like the new badge -- love your smiling faces! I'll have to remember to grab it for next week. Another friend was just talking about Boniva. I haven't read up on it, but it sounds like one of those drugs that you really have to weigh the side effects. Have you had symptoms of osteopenia, or is it something that you don't have symptoms of until you break something?

    1. After my first foot stress fracture, my doc ordered a bone scan since a stress fracture is a tell-tale sign. That test was normal. I had another foot fracture after that and recovered quickly. It was just time to have another scan. I don't think you have symptoms. Just just begin breaking bones.

  6. I'm sorry to hear about your osteopenia. I've had bone scans twice - so far so good, but I do have a family history of bone loss.

    Thanks for the linkup!

    1. I remember my Mom had Osteoporis in her 70s and took medication for it. But, I don't know when it started. She did not break any bones. I do know that.

  7. So I was diagnosed with Osteopenia last year after my stress fracture. It was pretty rough to hear at age 39 that you have an old lady diagnosis. :) I'm not taking anything other than Vitamin D and Calcium right now so I can't offer any input on Boniva. Good luck!

    1. My first bone scan after a stress fracture was normal. But, it was also a different type of test; being read by a human. This scan was scored by the machine and computer. I wonder if that makes a difference. It's scary to know it changed in two years time!

  8. I love that you have disco lights on your bike. If that doesn't make a workout fun, I don't know what will!
Also, I'm loving the new WW badge. Such a fun photo both of you.
I'm so sorry to hear about your Osteopenia diagnosis :( I know that must have been a huge shock for you. I've never heard of that medication before, but if I do, I will let you know!

    1. You definitely need these lights. There are solid or multi colors (I have solid green on the back tire). My sister gave them to me when I was riding on early dark mornings a couple of years ago.

    1. It is scary. How many times have medications been prescribed and then a few years later there are ads from attorneys saying "if you took this drug...". You never know.

  12. So sorry to hear about your osteopenia. I haven't had a scan in a while but I was ok then.

The weather up north was miserable. I barely moved on my runs if you can call it runs. Things will improve.

    1. My first scan was fine. But, I decided I'd get one as often as allowed by insurance since I have had fractures. Here I am two years later with softening bones.

    1. I know what menopause can do to women and thought I was being proactive by taking supplements and consuming plenty of dairy products. I was surprised.

  14. Blech sorry about the Osteopenia. That's a bummer. Do you take your Calcium and D with magnesium to maximize absorption? That's all I've got on the topic. Hooray for some quality time on Sanity and in the pool!

    1. I'll check on the magnesium. It may already be in one of my supplements. If not, it can't hurt to add it.

  15. I’m so sorry to hear about your diagnosis. I agree without Jessie that it’s crazy to think someone as strong and fit as you would have to worry about that!

  17. I've been reading about a lot of empty nesters this week. I hope you adapt well to the change. Hopefully you can nip the osteopenia in the bud before it becomes osteoporosis. I've started taking a calcium gummy along with my multi vitamin but I have to say I'm not loving it and considered stopping it. This was a good thing for me to read today to remind myself not too.

    1. It's not that I'm anti-drugs...I know there are benefits. But, I'd prefer to achieve the same results using other methods.

  19. It's been several years since I've had a scan and based on those results it wouldn't surprise me if I find myself in the same bone boat as you. I was told it's fairly common in small framed women. I think I'd consider taking the Vitamin D and calcium supplements and just try to be very cautious as long as I could before taking the meds.... I just hate taking prescription meds. Although, I realize the older I get, it will be unavoidable.

Love the new badge and hope you have a better week. P.S. Lakefront property sounds like a #holottafun!!!! :)

  20. Hope the empty nest goes well for you and you get to do all sorts of fun stuff. I'm busy worriting about my bestie, as both her and her husband's twins go off to university early Sept. And sorry about the Osteopenia, that's a scary thing, esp as you already take calcium and Vit D and obviously do a lot of weight-bearing exercise. Could they give you any other dietary tips or were they all just about the meds? An eating disordered friend and my f-i-l who has had oestrogen medicine for a health condition both take a big calcium supplementing drug (but I don;t know the name) and have a bad day afterwards but then are OK. But in both cases there's no other option. I hope you find a solution and find peace with it.

We've been so soggy here, all of the rain has been depressing...will it ever end?

I am so sorry to hear about your diagnosis - but it's good that you are now aware and take the steps needed. If you go the medication route I wish you the best!

I pretty much count on my running protecting me from everything, hehehe. If my memory is correct though, blond, fair skinned women are at high risk for osteoporosis.:-( I don't know much about Boniva but will ask around.

I too am Osteopenia and thought my running and healthy active lifestyle including calcium supplements would find it off but alas, not true.
