First of all, CONGRATULATIONS to Lisa @ Mile By Mile!  Lisa won our third anniversary giveaway.  Speeding toward Lisa is a gift certificate from On Your Marq.  We hope Lisa enjoys spending it and we thank her for being such a loyal linker over the years!

I hope everyone is enjoying a restful Labor Day holiday weekend.

I think Rocky has the right idea!

Aside from my usual pre-hab routine, I wasn't very active this week.  There is little to wrap up.  I have no excuse.  Being honest, my motivation and energy were simply in low supply.  By Saturday, and after two large mugs of coffee, I felt a little peppier and decided to take my bike off its trainer and outside for a spin.  When I put my helmet on, I discovered the timing tag was still attached from my last Century Ride.  That was in October.  I should be ashamed.

My usual route -- and the one I feel safest on -- is a 4-ish mile loop through an adjoining hilly neighborhood.  The streets are extra wide and the traffic is minimal.  It is rare I have to come to a complete stop at any intersection.  My heart rate averaged 160, which is pretty high for cycling.  I suspect the extra coffee had something to do with that.

This route puts Sanity through all of her gears!

We should be on the lake most of the day Sunday where I hope to be kicking up some ski spray.   I'm not sure what's on tap for Labor Day.  Maybe we'll return to the lake.  Or, we may just take a cue from Rocky and lay around in the back yard.

And that's a wrap!

How do you find your missing motivation?

What are your Labor Day plans?

  1. I think the weather has much to do with my sluggishness here. Don't feel bad about the Century remnant. I've still got a tri number sticker on Blanche and its been over a year. Ugh.

  2. Ah, end of summer is the perfect time for some down time! I hope you enjoyed.are enjoying the lake!

  3. My theory on the lack of motivation is that it's your body's (subtle?) way of telling you it is craving some down time. Also, as Marcia mentioned, swampy weather certainly adds to drama. The only really safe place to ride my bike (still un-named, BTW) is a trail that goes out to a lake...14-mile round trip and all kinds of BIG hills....so lots of gear shifting & heavy breathing are needed (which is probably why I do not do it very often). I should be ashamed as well...

  4. If I lived down south, I'm pretty sure my motivation would be missing, too. We do get a few cool days in between heat waves and leaves are already turning and falling.

Part of my motivation is that right now I can do this ... who knows what the future holds?

We'll go down to my folks tomorrow, which is always depressing/tiring. But I know that their time is running out (no, nothing particular going on at the moment), so I do my best to get down as often as I can.

  5. No Labour Day for me in the UK (but we had a bank holiday last Monday: I spent it working, as almost none of my clients have bank holidays and I had had almost two full days off in the previous week). Tomorrow I'll be working on editing some texts and typing some transcriptions, and may go for a recovery run (I'm never sure these do me any good but people do swear by them). Have a lovely day!

  6. So great you have the lake to escape to! I can't imagine that southern heat, it must be tough! It's plenty hot and humid in Minneapolis :)

Enjoy some down time and thanks for hosting the link-up!

  7. Woohoo! So excited about the giveaway. I think the heat is starting to get to most of us at this point- I feel like it's been so hot for so long! Spending time on the water this weekend is the way to go.

  8. I hope you enjoy skiing! I'm looking forward to a relaxing day tomorrow with no work! Well, no real work. Still will have food business work to take care of.

  9. Have fun water skiing. I don;t have any running to report either. I haven't run since my marathon 2 weeks ago! :(

  10. Extra rest is always good. Sometimes instead of trying to come up with stuff when I don't know what to do, I take a rest day. I hope you are on the lake and having a lot of fun today!

  11. We didn't make it to the lake to ski. :( The weather was too dicey. But the boys and I had a wonderful day in Madison! Lots of walking=a workout, right?

  12. I think that sometimes we have low energy weeks and that's okay! I believe it's a way out bodies ask us to slow down so that we can rest.

I'm glad that you have a bike route that you feel safe riding. One huge reason I don't own a road bike is because I'm just really scared of riding with cars and there aren't too many car free zones near my city.

  13. It's so nice to have a laid back week sometimes - kudos to you for doing your pre-hab amidst it!

Your bike route sounds so nice! Hope you have a great Labor Day!

  14. Congrats to Lisa! I worked Saturday afternoon and will see clients tomorrow, but today was fabulously wonderful! I hope you make it back out to the lake tomorrow so you can enjoy some more water skiing. Have a great rest of your holiday weekend!

    Thanks for the linkup!

  16. I really struggled with my motivation last week as well. I think this hot and muggy weather has a lot to do with it. Hopefully this week will be better for both of us!

  18. Our Labour Day is in May so I am stuck at work and all I want to be right now is Rocky! Hope you have a great day and that your motivation returns soon. I find sometimes changing my routine helps to bring back that uumpph!

  19. Your Saturday post coffee is my today, but working on my 3rd cup with no desire to move off the couch to either run or the badly needed straightening of my apartment. Ooph.

  20. My motivation took a huge plop this week. I was tired, overwhelmed and I just couldn't keep up with everything. It sucked. I think I just kind of went with it and am feeling a little more ready for the new week.

Hope you have a great holiday!

  21. My motivation has been waning has I cross-train/rehab from this injury and debate whether to run the marathon or not. Biking is fun though! Hope you enjoy some lake time!

  22. It's nice to have those down weeks (and I have plenty of them!) You are so fortunate to have your spot at the lake! It looks like you definitely take great advantage of it! Work for me on Labor Day.

  23. I had a semi down week from formal workouts since we went camping Friday - Monday. It was kind of nice to veer off the norm and just be active in any old way I wanted. This week is another week!

  24. We always have good weeks and bad weeks. The thing to do is not to get discouraged when we have a bad week - or don't get so discouraged that it ruins our next few weeks. Hope that this is a better week for you! I'm so jealous of all your lake time this summer - we have had a few HOT days and some lake time would be great!

  25. I usually find my missing motivation when the dew points drop below 75. Ha! Labor day was a day of relaxing and a bit of organizing around the house. I needed it after being away traveling for 2 weeks!

I'm sure your motivation will return soon!

  26. Having a lazy day should be a nice change of pace ;) I hope you enjoyed the holiday!

  27. Hope you had a good holiday weekend! Sometimes the lack of motivation is a good sign that we need rest :) Other times, it's a good sign for me that I need to shake up my routine and find a new route or run with friends or something.

  28. It sounds like a relaxing week. Sometimes it's just hard to keep that motivation alive. Right now my desire to get back into pre-pregnancy (let's face it, pre-marriage) shape is my single largest motivating factor. It's been a huge help!

  29. I hope you had a good holiday weekend! I usually let myself have a down week if my energy is really low - I'll really only do the workouts I feel motivated to do, rather than my entire weekly plan. Usually giving myself extra rest helps bring back motivation for the next week.

  30. I feel ya, the end of summer seems to have me in a bit of a slump. Add in all the rain we had from Gordon and I was a lazy bum over the weekend. I did enjoy spending some time with my husband and did some extra cooking!
