Thankful (WW # 173 )

**********************************************************

After last weekend's 10 mile race plus 6+ miles the following day, I planned to rest until Wednesday.   But, things got crazy and I didn't run until Thursday.  I was thankful the kids were home from college and helped around the house.  When I walked in after the most horrible stressful day and saw my Christmas tree fully decorated by our kids and grandson, I choked back tears of gratitude.  After finding the dishwasher unloaded, I really lost it [wink].

I couldn't miss my usual Thanksgiving morning eat-two-helpings-of-sweet-potato-casserole run and clocked 6.5 easy miles.  If it wasn't raining Saturday, I planned to run in a 5k and wanted to save speed until then.  Thursday was a long day of travel, helping a family member, and visiting the in-laws.  I'm thankful my MIL still prepares the main meal.  It was heavenly, as always.

Ryan's Run is a favorite 5k based on the Iron Bowl football rivalry played later in the day.  I didn't register in advance, waiting to see if the overnight rain stopped.    I was thankful to see it had so I quickly ate a yogurt --  my favorite just enough breakfast for a 5k -- dressed in team colors, and drove 5 minutes to the event.  It was in the upper 40s with 100% humidity.  I went with a skirt, tank and arm sleeves since I felt overdressed and too warm at last weekend's race wearing capris and long sleeves.  Good call.

It's a hilly course (yeah I know -- I say that about all of our races) so I began conservatively.  A young woman wearing a Michigan shirt got really chatty during the first mile.  [PS...Lady, Michigan will never be in the Iron Bowl -- just sayin'.]  I kept pausing my music to hear and respond to her questions.  I was nice, though.  I was.   But I was thankful to leave her behind on the first big hill.

There is no disputing this in an out and back course!

It was a solid progression run.  Given the course and where I am right now with my training I was pretty thankful to see my splits.  9:29, 9:10, 8:58, with 8:03 tail.  It was enough to win my age group... which in full disclose only had 10 people in it.  It was great to catch up with the local running girls and I rewarded myself with a Starbucks on the way home. I have another 5k in mind next weekend for more speed work.  I hope I can improve my splits.  If memory serves, that course should be flatter. Fingers crossed.

I was thankful to see our college team handily take the Iron Bowl victory later in the day.  Roll Tide.  The week was closed with a long mid morning run of 13 miles on Sunday.  It felt really tough especially after the sun popped out and warmed things up midway through.  But, it was my final long run before a half marathon I can hopefully travel to in two weeks.  My mileage for the week totaled 22.6.

And that's a wrap!

What is your favorite Thanksgiving dish?

What do you eat before a 5k race?

Other than the obvious (family, friends, health, freedom, etc.)
what is something you were thankful for this week?

  1. I'd be thankful for all that too! It's amazing that even when everything is going to sh**, there's always something to be thankful for. I came home safe and sound from Madison to Mike making enchiladas and doing the wash. I guess he's ok after all...

    Thankful for YOU, my friend!

    1. It helps to deal with the sh** if we can focus on the things we can be thankful for, even if they're small. I'm not saying it's always easy though.

Mike is a very smart man.

      Right back at you!

  2. Wow they decorated your tree? Can you send them over? Great work on the 5k my friend! 10 in the age group is plenty! Haha!

    1. The girls at work always asks to borrow them. One of them even cooks. But, you'll have to get in line.

    1. It's been a fun week with both of the college kids here at the same time! One of them is usually working (at his college's vet school).

  4. Great progression in the race and kudos for winning the age group, 10 people is still 10 people. I'm thankful for you and the blogger community you bring together here each Sunday. :)

  5. Congrats on that 5K! You logged a lot of miles for such a busy week. Whenever I stop to take stock, I always have a lot to be thankful for. My favorite Thanksgiving food is stuffing (or "dressing" since we don't cook it in the turkey anymore). My second favorite is cranberry sauce. Both are my mom's specialty and I am extra thankful she wasn't in the hospital this year! I'm thankful I've gotten to know you and Wendy and this supportive corner of the internet!

    1. I love good dressing! We've never put ours inside the turkey. I'm one of those weirdos who love the canned jelly-like cranberry sauce. So good.

  6. What a lovely gesture from the kids...the dishwasher unloading is the best little thing that means a lot :)

Congrats on the 5k! Those look like some serious hills.

It sounds like you have a lot to be thankful for! Happy Thanksgiving!

  7. Great race! Congrats on the age group win. Hey, a win is a win, no matter how many people are in your age group. That course looks like a bear (and by that, I mean tough - not an actual bear). My youngest son cooked Thanksgiving dinner this year. So thankful for that! I just had to show up with a couple of pies! :)

    1. It was a bear in the tough sense. But the route actually looked very much like a boot. I almost posted a picture. How wonderful your son did the cooking!

  8. I'm thankful to have a job I feel ready to go back to after this short break. I enjoyed my break and am bummed it has ended, and I also feel ready to go back. My last job wasn't like that by the end.

  10. I was especially thankful to have all three kids home at the same time. They're all scattered (one in Pennsylvania and two at different colleges), so it's rare to have them all here together. My favorite Thanksgiving dish is scalloped corn, and then I'm all about the leftover turkey and gravy ;-)

    1. I've never even heard of scalloped corn! I'll have to Google that. I think after sweet potatoes, dressing is my next favorite.

  11. An empty dishwasher sounds heavenly! And don't be talking smack about Michigan, lady! Just kidding. After how they played this weekend, they don't belong anywhere. I was thankful for the ability to sleep in for most of the week. And when I say sleep in, I mean 6 a.m. :)

    1. I wasn't razzing her about her choice of team. But, it was an IRON BOWL race, which is Alabama vs Auburn -- so I thought it odd to wear "Michigan". I heard about their game. Ouch.

  13. Glad you had a nice thanksgiving & unexpected help from the family is something to be thankful for! I'd be darn proud of winning my AG & you should be!

I am thankful I have a few weeks to the next vet visit & that the news on Lola was good. And thankful for the opportunity to run with someone for a change!

  14. Congratulations on another awesome race! Way to go!

I don't generally eat before a 5K. For the most part, I roll right out of bed and run, so no time to eat. If I do have to wait a bit, I'll have some plain bagel or a granola bar. It digests easily and doesn't sit badly in my stomach.

I have so many favorite dishes: my mom's artichokes and spinach patties, stuffing and homemade cranberries and apple pie. Yum, yum, yum.

And I'm thankful for all those usual things and so much more: the opportunities I've been offered this year, the progress I've made in some of my longer term goals, and that Mr PR is having a better time with his business now than earlier this year.

    so take two -

Congrats on your 5k and award -I won mine in my Sat half marathon but I was the only one in my ag lol

I love stuffing and sweet potatoes.

That was so sweet that they decorated your tree!!!

I have oatmeal & coffee before every race - a creature of habit.

    1. I'm not sure I've ever eaten stuffing. Down here, we make dressing. We don't put anything inside the turkey.

  16. Congrats on the age group win! My favorite Thanksgiving food is pumpkin pie. Though I also love homemade rolls, and potatoes in any form. Really I just want all the holiday carbs...

My favorite dish is lox - I don't like turkey, but I will eat stuffing. Since Thanksgiving is often birthday-adjacent, I pull the "nope" card. Last year I had a turkey shaped sugar cookie

  18. No Thanksgiving favourites here in the UK, but I have enjoyed seeing and reading about everyone's meals and my running friends' turkey trots etc. People have been breaking out the Christmas running leggings here - too early??

    1. It's been Christmas in some of out stores since Halloween. I think the Christmas leggings are OK now.

  19. Congrats on the age group win! Hilly 5K's are so tough for me, especially when it comes to pacing!

My favorite side is definitely macaroni and cheese! My sister has taken over the recipe for our generation, and thankfully she lives close by!

    1. I love a good mac and cheese but it's not on our family's usual Thanksgiving menu. Maybe we should correct that!

  20. Happy belated Thanksgiving! I love pretty much all the sides, especially the stuffing. That's usually my favorite, along with any roasted veggies like squash, brussels sprouts, etc. yum! I don't like to eat much before a race - a 1/4 or 1/2 a bagel if anything, depending on the length of the race? I did a 5 miler on Thanksgiving and forgot to eat before and was hungry, so when I got to the start I had half a pumpkin cookie! It worked out thank goodness.

    1. I don't like much before a short distance either. That's why the yogurt is perfect. It's more like a liquid anyway.

  24. Congrats on your AG win in your 5K! A win is a win, not matter how many are in your age group, but I've got the admit that it's all the sweeter when there are lots!

The lady wearing the Michigan shirt probably wasn't so chatty after the Michigan/Ohio State game. ;-)

  27. I'm all about the pumpkin pie on Thanksgiving. Turkey, not so much. Congrats on your win! I'm thankful that my husband is handy - sure, he was the one who clogged the sink with potato peels on Thanksgiving, but he also got the clog out. :)
