Although it seems to work well for most everyone I know, I'm not a fan of planning too far ahead any more.  Back in the day, I'd plan and research...and plan some more.  I don't set official goals or New Year's resolutions.  I could never understand -- if something is wrong, why would you wait until January 1st to do anything about it?

CHEERS to the New Year!

Of course, general ideas form throughout the year of new adventures to try, places to visit, races to enter, or even unpleasant chores to finally tackle.  But one reason I don't push those REGISTER or BOOK NOW buttons well in advance is that it takes away my ability to be spontaneous.  You never know what opportunities will pop up throughout the year.  That can also be said for injuries, unfortunately.  These days, I'm more go with the flow and have no shame in signing up last minute.

Next weekend, I'm meeting Wendy, Teresa and Karen for Mobile's half marathon.  After limiting my running for a month, I still have a pain in my ass.  Literally.  There may be more walking than running for me.  I've been under a lot of stress lately, so more than anything I'm looking forward to spending time with the girls.

While it was dirt cheap, I registered for my hometown half marathon in March.  That's all the races I have on my calendar so far.  Unfortunately, for a while my racing will be dictated by my sore bum.

In other news, we will be moving to a lake home in a few weeks.  This will occupy (and has already occupied) the majority of my time for a while.  If I never see another cardboard box, it will be too soon.  [If anyone is interested in guest hosting the Weekly Wrap, please send me an email.]  I'm ready to be settled so I can get back to a routine; even if it's a different one.  Side note: you're not going to believe the hills in my new neighborhood!  EEK.

We hope to go snow skiing in Colorado with the college kids for Spring Break; an unbelievable, mere 9 weeks away.  I'm very excited about that.  That's as far as my ideas go for now...

And that's a wrap!

What are you looking forward to most in the upcoming weeks?

Do you have your whole year planned out?

  1. I've stopped planning too--RA kind of took that away from me! As it turns out, spontaneity is a good thing. Hoping you can spontaneously join me up here for a race. And some Wisconsin waterskiing.

    1. Both sound like very fun options! Except for around here, the only place I've ever water skied was in Jamaica. And they didn't drive the boat correctly. LOL.

  2. That's so exciting about your new lake home - Congrats! I totally understand what you mean about never seeing a cardboard ox again - I absolutely hate moving!

I hope that you have a great weekend with the girls next weekend! :)

I'll send you an email about guest hosting WW :)

    1. I keep reminding myself of the end reward. But cleaning, packing, organizing, and trips to Goodwill are getting really old.

  3. Sorry for the pain in the buttocks! I do some planning in advance. I'm trying to be somewhat frugal in my race registrations (ahem, TWO college students), and the early bird deals are enticing. I also believe in spontaneity, though, becaue I do things "on the fly" now and then. Happy 2019!!

    1. Yeah, I'll bite sometimes with the really cheap fees (like my hometown race). That way if I can't go, it doesn't hurt so bad. Yeah -- two college students here too. OUCH.

  4. Oh exciting about the move! And hope the bum behaves, I have got mine down to intermittent grumbling by doing all my stretches.

I have the Liverpool Marathon and my ultra booked in. The only other things I have booked are loads of cross-country, road relay and now athletics meetings to work at as an official!

    1. I've done some foam rolling and stretching, but I swear it seems worse when I do. Right now, I'm just letting it calm down. It gets no worse during a run -- which I take as a good sign.

  5. Moving always ends up being so much more work and hassle than you ever expected. Hope once you get all settled in, things will feel good. Have an amazing time next weekend with the girls

    1. I look forward to settling in. It seems like this process took so long, but I guess it really didn't.

  6. Congratulations on the new place, can't wait to see your photos. Good luck resolving that quickly.
I'm with you on not waiting until Jan 1 -- my health journey started in early March and I don't regret it at all. I needed to be ready.
Enjoy your running weekend! I'm part planner, part spontaneous. I don't have as many registered for as I thought I might, but waiting for some other calendar pieces to fall into place.

    1. I'm not doing as many races as I once did. And, I'm OK with that. I often make a decision on Wednesday or Thursday for a local weekend 5k. LOL.

  7. I am SO type A that I have to have the year planned out and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.

    1. I was once that way too. For some reason, it's been easier to let it go recently...

  8. Yay for moving! Wait... well, I mean yay for the new home! Now moving itself stinks, IMO. We may be moving in March; still crossing the t's and dotting the i's on our house sale first. I do struggle with New Years resolutions. I like the zeal that comes from starting a new year, but generally I'm working on habits throughout the year anyways!

    1. There seems to be a lot of i's and t's to complete! I'm holding my breath for a week or so longer. You just never know if something will fall through.

  9. I like the new year to actually reflect about what I've accomplished and what I can do better. Sort of like a a year-end review at work, only better (I find year-end reviews kind of boring but that's because I have a job and not a career). But I get it. I don't really have resolutions, more goals and things to do better. I do plan quite a few things out in advance but if it has to do with international travel I kind of have to so it doesn't cost me an arm and a leg, you know?

great news about the move - the cardboard box period is so annoying! but you are nearly there!

i hope your bum feels better soon - what is going on? glutes? sciatic nerve?

anyway i know you'll have a great time with girls in mobile!!

    1. For airline travel, I do try to book somewhat in advance if I can. If I don't... ouch. Not sure exactly what's going on with the bum yet.

  10. This year I am following a similar approach of only planning out until April instead of the whole year. I have a general idea of where I want my training to go, but am open to switching things around.

  11. My work makes it hard to plan too far ahead, but sometime I have to. About half the races I do sell out immediately, so you have to sign up months in advance. For the ones that don't, I often wait until the last minute -- or a a price increase. I know the move will (continue to) be hard work, but it will be worth it when you are in your new place!

  12. Congrats on the move to a house on the lake! Are you retiring or is it still close enough to commute?

I no longer register for races very far in advance unless it's one I really want to do and it risks filling up. The odds that I might be injured on race day are getting greater with every year older I get...

    Thanks for the linkup!

  13. I planned too much last year. This year is definitely more go with the flow! I mean, I do have a few things planned but nothing major and I like it that way. :) I'm flying to Seattle for a few days next month for a Women's Summit and I'm looking forward to it.

Congrats on the new home on the lake! Is it where you go water skiing? Moving can really be a pain in the tush but it's such a great feeling when all the boxes are unpacked.

  14. Unless I can register for a race at dirt cheap pricing, I've done the delay thing too - like you said, too much can happen and who knows if I'll want to run something in 9 months! I feel you on the move - we had to pack up our house as if we were moving for our renovation last year and I too was sick to death of cardboard boxes. Can't wait to see pictures of your new place!

  15. Given my battle with injuries last year, I'm hesitant to plan too many races in advance. I'm sorry you're dealing with the PITA - been there and it's no fun :( Do you know what's causing the problem?

Best of luck with your move - hope all goes smoothly!

  16. Moving is SO much work. It's always incredible just how much stuff we have snuck away in different places :) Good luck with everything, the new place sounds amazing and embrace that hill training (assuming that sore bum gets better!)

  17. I'm not really good about looking too far ahead into the racing future either. I only registered for one race so far - Loon Mountain in July. It was dirt cheap so I couldn't resist. Although I had planned on doing it no matter the cost. It's one of my favs!

  18. I don't plan too far ahead either, Disney not withstanding. You have to plan a Disney race far in advance, otherwise it'll be sold out. So far I had a ski day with work, the Disney trip, and family coming up from Houston in March for skiing.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Colorado? I just booked a family ski trip March 23-28 for Keystone resort! I can't wait! Hoping it will be some beautiful spring skiing, but we've never been there that late in the season. Have you?

  20. I most definitely do not have my year planned out. I like to, but it's just not in the cards for me right now.

I'm sorry about the sore butt. Such a PITA (sorry, I just couldn't resist). I'm sure you gals will have such a blast!

Moving is one of the most stressful things you can do! It was almost 10 years ago, but I still remember how we could barely move in the house for all the boxes. We didn't even have to pack them (but we did have to unpack them!). Good luck with the move! A lake sounds divine.

  21. Ugh. Moving is the worst! I know the end result is going to be fabulous, but I joke that the next time we move, I'm taking the husband, the kid, the animals and pretty much nothing else LOL.

I hope your booty starts feeling better. How frustrating :(

I have a hard time being spontaneous. It's something I'm working on - there are benefits to being scheduled, but there are also benefits to flexibility and going with the flow. It's my personal tightrope to walk.

The whole year isn't planned, but I have a general idea of the flow I would like. There are still some tweaks to be made, depending on scheduling, but I can't wait to start filling in the holes.

  22. Skiing during spring break sounds great! I'm looking forward to our next vacation- I don't know when that is, though.

  23. I'm not a resolution person either, I set goals for the year, but not resolutions. It doesn't feel as concrete to me and its too easy for people to get off track with resolutions.

As far as planning in advance, I am usually a planner but only to make sure I'm able to get the time off because I like to travel for races. So far I have until May 2019 planned out, and possibly a marathon for the fall too. If all goes according to plan, I will be hitting my 10th state of running this year, so I'm excited for that!

  24. All the best with the new house. That is so exciting! Beyond Tokyo in March and London in April I've got nothing. And I like it that way. I might even take a summer vacation from running, who knows? Thanks for the linkup!

  25. Moving to a lake house sounds awesome, although moving can be such a pain. My husband and I have been looking at buying our first home and the prospects of moving sometimes make me want to just stay in my rental.

Have fun in Colorado! I live in Utah by some rad ski resorts. It definitely doesn't get much better than hanging in the mountains.

  26. Sorry to hear about your injury! Moving to a lake home sounds exciting! Have fun next weekend!!

  27. Congrats on the lake house! Moving is soooo much work!
Have a great time with the girls, sounds like you need it. :-)

  28. I hope you have fun in Mobile and good luck with the move to the lake house!

  29. I could not agree with you more about not setting definite plans for 2019! Of course I have goals and races and blah blah blah but overall, I'm just open to new opportunities and travels! Good luck with the move. That is a HUGE ordeal but hopefully it will be amazing and worth it when all is said and done. And, 10 years ago we built a house on a monster of a hill (18% grade and .25 miles to my house) and it has only made me a stronger runner!!...plus my neighbors heckle me if I'm ever walking up it :-)

  30. Congrats on the new home! I know exactly what you mean about not wanting to see another cardboard box. After moving twice in the final quarter of 2018 (one cross country, one into a home), I am happy not moving again for a very very long time. I hope your move goes smoothly!

  31. I love planning and researching enough that it's almost like a separate hobby :P But it also doesn't work for me to have plans set in stone more than a few months in advance, so my planning habit tends to result in plan A, B, C...and who knows how many more!
