Coming out of the water at the start of a ski run

The week started off with Memorial Day and a trip to the lake.  I hopped in and skied.  However, it was windy so I cut my run short and we rode on further to a calmer part of the lake.  Just when I was about to jump back in to ski again, PoPo said he smelled something burning.  The kids and I rolled our eyes...because PoPo always smells something.   He insisted on opening the engine compartment and lo and behold -- FLAMES.  The fire was put out with a wet ballcap that had blown into the water and was drying on the dash.  Our fire extinguisher...did not work.

It was a long afternoon of rescue.  Even though a nice couple stopped quickly to tow us in, they had a smaller boat and we were as far away as we could get.   Luckily, I had a $100 Visa gift card in my wallet. They deserved every penny and more!  The next person who needs a tow?  We will gladly pay it forward. We also had to be towed last Memorial Day.  That event required a brand new engine.  Yes, that's right. Our engine is new, which made our little fire that much more aggravating.

I'm standing beside the engine compartment where the fire was located!

So, we had yet another Griswold Family experience and enjoyed some odd, but memorable, family bonding time.  Thanks to PoPo's overly sensitive nose, nobody was hurt, the 45 gallons of gas did not ignite {think about that!} and there was very little damage.  The Happy Anna was in the hospital less than a day and will be back on the lake as soon as it's not raining.

I'm still not running many miles in preparation for impending marathon training.  This week was all about mixing it up -- Skiing, Progressive Run, Speed Work, Easy Run, Swimming, Strength Training, Planking, Pushups and Cycling were all on the agenda.  It all happened except cycling.  I had to scrap those plans because of weather.

I celebrated Global Running Day by working on speed.  I added a couple of swim workouts to the mix this week.  Although I look pretty pathetic, I feel fairly comfortable in the water.  I will never win points for form or style.  My Saturday morning swim was in steady rain, which was surprisingly enjoyable.  Sunday I awoke to rain again and decided to run instead of cycle.

I plan to continue the mix for the month of June.  I should be cycling on a few different routes in the coming week.  Hopefully the weather will cooperate.  Before I forget...registration is open for June's Level Up Virtual Run.  You may run your 5k any time between June 15th and 30th.  Don't forget to use SAVE10 at checkout!  Cowabunga, Dudes!  Join me!

And that's a wrap!

Hmm...what do you know...I didn't once complain about the suffocating heat and humidity!

What's your favorite way to mix it up?

  1. Thank goodness no one was hurt during the engine fire on the boat! You were very lucky!

Ideally, I would love to mix it up by kayaking, but since my creek isn't really deep enough for kayaks I haven't purchased one. As it is, I try to bike one day a week, I consistently lift three days a week, and try to do yoga about four to five days...

    Thanks for the linkup!

  2. You know I love to mix it up! Otherwise it would be boring. I'm dying to get out on the lake. Hopefully over the 4th.

Last summer when I was with my parents in Wisconsin, my dad's boat engine started smoking. Luckily we weren't far from the dock. Pretty scary, because we go boating on Green Bay! That's a big body of water. Glad you were ok.

  3. Wow, that fire was scary. Glad everyone is okay and that you got help. I haven't been out in our boat yet this year.

  4. Swimming, biking and running...??? Is there going to be a triathlon in your future?? Glad to hear that the fire wasn't serious, although that is annoying given that it's a new engine!! I like to mix it up with yoga and TRX training but I can't really do either right now. :(

  5. Memorial day weekend, while I was in VT, my hubby's boat had to be towed. A screw got loose and caused a chain reaction. Long story short, it cost $700 to fix. This weekend, I had a race on Sat and today it rained. Still no boating for me :(

I see a TRI in your future.

The only mixing I'm doing is tennis and running. I need to start some planking or yoga.

  6. Wow, that's certainly a memorable start to the week. I'm glad everyone was okay and the boat wasn't out of action for too long.

I've never been water skiing, in fact I've not really done any water sports. Swimming is about it!

  7. Wow, thats so crazy about the fire! Im glad everyone was ok and that was so nice of the other people to help get you in! I don't mix it up too much, but I always incorporate at least some strength training into my week. But running is pretty much the only cardio I do these days!

  8. Wow. 2 memorial days, 2 fires -- that is definitely bad luck. At least you got in some time on the water, we spent the whole day flying across the country. Then just a few yrs ago I was by myself on Memorial Day because my husband was in Europe on a business trip. Last year I was dying at ZOOMA Annapolis (but did get to meet up with a HS buddy).

I guess Memorial Day hasn't been too kind to me either!

I like swimming as cross training but it just takes so much time!

  9. Yowza! So scary about the engine fire. Thank heavens all turned out ok. Love love love the pics of you water skiing. So badass. My workouts are all over the place with this tri thing but I'll be buckling down for RnRChi and then my fall marathon before I know it.

  10. wow! I'm glad no one was hurt, or there wasn't more damage! I would be in major panic mode if that happened to me....you know, me and water...(even though I'm a Pisces).

  11. So glad the fire wasn't worse!! That's crazy and scary to think about what could've happened! I love your pictures of you water skiing! You look awesome!

  12. Oh, gosh, glad PoPo discovered that fire and you were able to be rescued! You may not be doing a long run, but those are some serious running workouts! I did spinning instead of a bike ride today because it was supposed to be stormy, but the rain held off until 7 pm!

  13. I think the variety in workouts really helps fight boredom! Plus, with all the marathon training, it's nice to take it easy now! So glad that Popo smelled the gas in time!! That's scary. The humidity is stifling here too.

  14. Glad that fire wasn't worse! Scary! My way of mixing it up (lately anyway) was adding in the biking and swimming. We will see if it continues now that the tri is done. Hopefully. :) Skiing looks like a good time. I've only tried it a couple times and that was years ago. BUt I don't really have access to a boat anymore

  15. Glad to know you're ok. Weird that it burned when it was new. Hope you can get some compensation for that deal.

  16. Wow, that fire must have been so scary. We did not get out on our boat this weekend due to really windy conditions and spent time at the beach and by the pool. You had a great week of varied workouts. Funny that I am in the same place with running, with Chicago on my fall calendar too. I need this month of refreshing before the hard stuff starts again.

  18. Oh my goodness- what a wild crazy and scary experience! Glad that you are okay. Thanks as always for hosting the link-up party, have a great week! Good luck as you start marathon training.

  19. Thank goodness you're all okay! That sounds seriously dangerous! Was the engine under warranty? Nice mix of workouts for the week! I give you lots of credit for doing speed work in the heat! I'm nowhere ready for that yet. Have a great week!

  20. that's so crazy! i'm glad everything turned out okay, but that stinks that you had to replace a new engine!

  21. Wow, that is scary about the fire! Glad you caught it before anything bad happened. I mostly run and hike, strength train, and do Pilates to mix it up. I've never been good at swimming!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Wow! There's an advantage to having an overly sensitive sense of smell (like me). At least you were able to have some fun before having to be rescued.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Glad to hear that nobody was hurt in the fire. What a scary experience!

    ReplyDelete
  24. I'm glad everyone was okay! That could have been bad! That virtual run looks awesome, I like the TMNT bling!!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Yikes! That's scary about the fire. I'm glad to hear that no one was hurt and the boat is back on good terms too.

  26. Wow, thank goodness PoPo's nose picked that up, what a scary thought! Glad you all were safe and rescued! I'd love to do jetskis one day. Great job with your workouts, you really mixed it up!

  27. Glad you are all ok!!!! And you are awesome to pay it forward! <3

  28. Glad y'all are alright, but I would definitely be upset that my new engine caught fire. Thank goodness for that nice couple, no matter how small their boat was. Otherwise you guys might still be paddling back to shore! Haha.

    Glad it's already fixed too!

  29. Hole smoking engines!!! So glad you all are ok and the worse did not happen...geez!! Good thing Po-Po was right this time ;)

I LOVE all of your skiing pictures...so freaking cool!!

Well heat and humidity is right here in the DC area....you can surely take some if you want it!

  30. Oh no!! that does not sound fun at all! I'm glad you were all ok! good thing for your husband's keen sense of smell!

thank you for the link up!

  31. Holy moly on that engine fire! I guess you guys will always have to give your husband the time of day whenever he smells something from now until forever. ;) Seriously, though - glad y'all were safe and made it back to the dock unscathed.

  32. So glad no one was hurt! Swimming sounds like a fun way to mix it up.

  33. Glad you guys are okay and he has such a sensitive nose!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Boats! It is always something! I am sure you will pay it forward, no doubt! Enjoy another week of mixing it up- it appears to be treating you well!

    ReplyDelete
  35. I guess popos nose saved the day!!! So glad the fire was put out quickly and no one was injured!!! I grew up on a lake and a boat so I understand how unpredictable ( and dangerous) things can be!
Boat engine fire aside, it seems like you still had a great time!! Hope this week goes well for mixing things up with your workouts!!!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Oh no! Sorry to hear about the boat engine. Glad that PoPo smelt it and all is ok and so nice that there was someone there to tow you back in. Other than that, sounds like a good week of workouts!

    ReplyDelete
  37. Oh my goodness - how scary to hear about the engine fire! You are very fortunate that nobody was hurt and that you were able to get some help being towed back in. Cheers to those good samaritans and PoPo's sensitive nose. =) I've got some friends and family members with boats, and they've had a few stories over the years of their incidents. One friend was on a wave runner and ran out of gas - but there was nobody to tow her in for quite some time. So she sat out there in the water for something like 45 minutes before she was finally able to get some help!

  38. That is so, so scary about the engine fire on the boat. I've heard that fire can be the worst threat on the water. I'm glad that you guys had life jackets and you got some help. It's great that none of you were hurt as boats and engines are replaceable but not people and the water can be dangerous.

I'm not really into virtual races but it's so awesome that the medal and race is TMNT themed. My husband loves that and I grew up watching it too, and it's neat that it's around for this generation.

  39. two engines in a year??? OMG! You look fierce in your skiing pic! GO Holly!

    ReplyDelete
  40. Holy moly! How scary! We needed a new battery in our car on Memorial Day, so 'tis the season for that kind of thing!

Look at you water skiing! There is no way I would be able to even stand up!

  42. Oh no! Glad you and your boat are all okay. How frustrating to have to get two engines in one year.

I'm not running too many miles right now either. Summer is a great time for other activities, especially ones related to water!

    ReplyDelete
  43. That is a so not fun way to break into the summer. I am really glad no one was hurt and you were able to get it under control before anything really terrible happened.
Glad you were able to get out and ski though, I know it's your favorite!!!

    ReplyDelete
  44. That engine fire would have totally freaked me out! Good thing PoPo has a sensitive nose!

I need to start figuring out a marathon training plan. I've been taking things way too easy lately.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Sorry to hear about your boat! Glad everything turned out ok! The TMNT medal looks cute!

    ReplyDelete
  46. That looks like a super fun way to mix it up! I don't know many people that have water skiing on their weekly workout agenda!! Very cool. I was thinking I was really going to switch it up by getting back into spinning.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Maybe you should stay in on Memorial Day next year (just kidding). Sorry to hear about your incident. Glad everyone was ok and some nice people came to your rescue. Michael and I had to pull someone to their destination a few months ago. Hope you can get back out on the water soon! Have a great week!

  48. I wish I could water ski. The thing is, I'm too afraid of the lake. Ha! I used to sail at camp when I was a kid and the times I capsized I totally freaked out because I could feel the seaweed on my feet. So no waterskiing for me... :)

    ReplyDelete
  49. i love that you went water skiiing! I dont think I would be very good at it though

    ReplyDelete
  50. Ha yes thanks to PoPo's nose it did not get worse! We so enjoyed being out on our friends boat, now Mr. Sippi is going to want one....again! I have to say I was a scardy cat after the ski popped up and hit one of the guys in the rib which lead to a trip to the ER. It's not broken but badly bruised. I'll save the skiing for another day. :|

  51. Whew! Thank God for PoPo's super sensitive nose! I'm glad you all made it out safely. Great week of mixing up the workouts for you 👍 I'm mixing it up lately with a laid back running approach. I run when I want to and am taking for rest time this month 😁
