S     Ran 8 (1 w/u 7 @ 9:41)

Total = 23 Miles

I didn't set any goals for 2016 (I never really do) but I noticed about a month ago I was going to come very close to running 1200 miles.  So, I made sure to add an extra mile here and there in order to make it happen.  How exciting!  It would definitely be my largest mileage in one year.  On Thursday afternoon (December 29th) I decided to double check my figures and realized one of my short bike rides was mistakenly categorized as a run.  Wah...wah...waahhh [cue deflating balloon noise].  Could I squeeze in the necessary 16 miles in two days?  Uh...no.  I'm pooped!  I gave up on the-dream-I-didn't-know-I-had and instead added an extra day of rest.  I'm over it.  I am.  Yes, I am.  Moving on...

Although 2016 started off very rocky with a lot of hard work ahead of me, I polished off 2 marathons, 8 half marathons, 4 sprint triathlons, 1 ten miler and 7 5ks.  I also had the wonderful opportunity to meet quite a few blogger friends in Chicago and Panama City Beach.  I came in at 1193 miles for the year and 161 for December, both of which are personal records.  Unfortunately, my cycling mileage was only 478 -- much lower than 2015.  There was dog-paddling swimming and my much adored water skiing too.  I'll spare you the tedious quantification of those activities. {You're most welcomed!}

2016 in Medals

This week was an attempt to return to a normal routine including normal eating.  I was delighted to get a day-after-Christmas calorie-busting 6 miler in with my sister as we only see each other a couple of times each year.  There was another 6 miles the following day -- still working on that 1200 mark!  {I swear, I'm over it!}

Silly mailbox greetings from UhOh and HoHo (it was very warm!)

Tuesday's dark, warm and foggy run.

Saturday, I ran my last "long" run of eight miles.  Because it was end of month and end of year, I had to work for a while.  Yuck.  We later watched our beloved Tide roll over Washington, went out for Mexican food and then watched a movie while snuggled up with the dogs.  New Years Eve has never been a big celebration at our house.  We ended the year in our typical preferred low key fashion.

Just hold it right there, New Year!

So many others are posting about 2017 goals and race plans.  I simply can't think beyond this marathon. I felt the same way last year.  Mentally, my new year can't start until after this race.  It's like my mind is in a fog.  I'm just six days and a few easy short runs away from running my third marathon {GULP}.  I will mostly be doing a HoLottaNothing this week.  I can only hope Mother Nature will be kind.  She was on an extreme humidity bender last year.  Perhaps this will be the one?

And that's a wrap!

I wish everyone a safe, healthy and happy New Year.

How did you celebrate New Year's Eve?

What is your highest yearly mileage?  How about monthly?

  1. I was so close to that 1000 mark--if only I had had one more week to run. But like you, I'm over it.

    I do like to set goals for each year, but 2017 is kind of a big question mark now. Optimistically, I want to do a lot of running. Fingers crossed that I can. I will be waterskiing! Ahem.

    1. I just need a couple of days to hit that mark. Oh, well. I tend to form general ideas but no hard set goals. Something always seems to foil the plans anyway. Uh-oh. I think my husband's last minute planning is rubbing off on me. Water skiing is excellent as there is NO POUNDING!

  2. You had a really great year ! Good luck on your race next weekend !
    I cooked dinner for 8 people for New Year's. It was a lot of work considering that my husband had to work so I did all the cooking. It was fun of course, but I was all cooked out. 16 people for Christmas and 8 for New Years for a full sit down meal each time means lots of cleaning (before & after) and cooking. Now it is back to work tomorrow, before a busy busy January.

    Thanks for the link up ! I am going to take a blog break but will check back often.

    Can't wait to read about the marathon !

    1. Cooking for a crowd (and all that cleaning) is definitely hard work. I thankfully have one more day off to chill. I intend to keep my feet up for most of the day. Thanks for the marathon well wishes. I plan to channel all of the incredible support found here! I'll miss your blog.

  3. As I hinted around earlier in the week, I think I will adopt a mileage goal for this year. March came in at my most mileage month with just over 93 miles. In fact I think I'll go for just a little bit more in most goals this year. Nothing crazy just #domore #dobetter. We'll see. Looking forward to 2017!

    1. As we discussed, I think you can easily add to your weekly numbers without too much effort. I look forward to getting into 2017 and making some real plans. If I'm healthy after Disney, I would love to run the Callaway half and the end of January. It is such pretty scenery.

  4. I came in a bit under 800 this year -- I would have liked it to be a little more (although I also have no yearly mileage goals) but it is what it is and I'm at peace with that.

    I am praying hard for the perfect weather for you at Disney! You deserve it, Holly. I really do hope this is the one.

  5. I totally get not being able to think past your marathon. Give it just one more week, and then you'll have all the time in the world to dream up new goals while you're recovering. I'm so excited for you. YES, to answer your question, this WILL be the one! Happy New Year!

  7. Good luck with that marathon! I'm not a New Year's person either, and I was in my PJs even before dinner. I have a head cold, so between that and happy to see 2016 move on, I wasn't in the mood to celebrate. I slept through it all.

  9. Good luck next weekend at your marathon! Can't wait to follow along on IG and read your recap when you get around to writing it.

    I used to consistently run about 1,800-1,900 miles per year, but that was when I was running several marathons per season and always in training mode (and much younger). I haven't added up my mileage for this year...

    Thanks for the linkup!

  17. I had my highest ever yearly mileage (965) and my highest ever monthly mileage in October (169)....and I don't think it's a coincidence I'm in a bit of an injured state at the moment LOL Many runners thrive on high mileage, but I'm an quite thankful I can hold my own with fewer numbers. And, I will embrace that reality in 2017 (among other realities as well). #movingon ;-)

    1. Since I regularly run many half marathons during the year, my mileage is usually somewhere around 1000-1100. Hitting 1200 would have been nice, but I had to let it go. Your highest month mileage is HUGE. Impressive!

  18. I finished off 2016 with 1283 miles (the most I've ever done in a year!). Pleased and happy with it. The most I did in a month was was in August at 191. :-)

    As for New Year's, we had dinner at home and then I went to my cousin's house with my nephew. However, we left around 11:30 as I did not want to be out in the street at midnight.

  19. I came in at about 880 miles this year - a little less than usual but since I was pregnant and then had to take some time off postpartum, i'm pretty pleased with that number. We had a good NYE out. Yay for race week!!! You can set some new goals - and I can't wait to see what they are!

    1. I don't think we should feel pressured to have everything figured out for the new year on January 1st. It's my experience things always happen that change the goals anyway. I'd rather just make it up as I go along, I think. LOL. Great job on your mileage!

  23. I hadn't set a yearly mileage goal, but earlier in the week when I looked at the numbers I saw I was close to 900 and that it would be foolish not to try and make it!! I did look back to 2015 and I had 30+ than this year!! I had to stop setting number goals because I end up all wrapped up in the numbers!!

    I'm looking forward to the Disney Half next week. I hope you have great weather on Sunday.

  31. I ran over 2,000 miles in 2016 but honestly, I feel like a yearly mileage goal is a bit overrated. I'd rather have good race results and stay healthy than just run a lot of miles, so maybe I need to run less next year. I don't know. Anyway, you had a great 2016 of running and triathlon no matter how many miles you ran. So you made what you did run count and that means something!

    We also watched the tide roll as well as Clemson roll over OSU but I think Alabama will win the championship. They're just so good every single year... powerhouse.

    I can't wait to see what 2017 brings for you!

  38. Actually, one of my goals this year is to track my mileage. The last time I did was in a little handwritten notebook in 2011 - and I insisted on being 100% accurate & going out to two decimal places which was just foolish - and made adding it all up a total nightmare.

    Needless to say, I'm excited to track & see what I end up with. I would guess somewhere around 500? I usually only run 3 days a week, and don't plan on running ANY marathons.
