For risk of sounding like a broken record this week...it was HOT.  As I wrapped up last week, I explained how I was just doing whatever I felt when it came to running.  I felt really good last week and that translated to four runs.  I actually wanted to run every day but held back.  This week?  Not so much.

My week started with good intentions.  I did my usual strength/pre-hab routine on Monday and Tuesday morning I was at the mailbox bright and early for a 5 mile progression run.  However, the sun was so intense and the heat was already wide open.  Afternoon triple digit heat indexes, morning humidity at 100%, dew points in the mid 70's, and feels like 90 at 6 a.m.were unfortunately the theme for my week.  The same as last week.  I live in the deep south.  I get it.  But it doesn't mean it makes it any easier to run in.

I was back on the streets early Thursday morning for another 5 miles.  It ended up as a progressive run as well but a bit speedier than Tuesday's run so I was pleased.

By Friday, exhaustion from not sleeping well all week and possibly the heat had caught up to me.  After going to bed early and then sleeping in the next morning -- there was still no physical activity on Saturday.  I had to work a short while and then we were out of town the rest of the day anyway.

That brings me to Sunday.  Although I needed a double digit run, I just wasn't feeling it.  I did get out for a slower paced 7.7 mile run before we headed to the lake.  That is likely where I still will be as this goes live.

I hope I can squeeze in that double digit run one morning before work this week as next weekend we'll be busy watching our grandson's baseball team compete at the state championship level.

And that's a wrap!

How are you coping with the summer conditions?

  1. Thankfully, the high heat/humidity isn't too unbearable in Iowa in the early morning hours, so that's when I'm out there "coping" with it. Although, I did a late afternoon speed session last week...and it wasn't too bad. I was a major wet "glowing" mess when I finished, but all was well. I love your mailbox pics!!!

    1. You know, sometimes it is better here in the afternoon. It's hot YES but the humidity is down and you can normally get a little breeze. The thing about afternoons is - with it so hot now it's typical for us to get pop up storms. I can't run in those!

  2. Sometimes it's good to force yourself to stick with your plan, but sometimes it's wiser to let yourself off the hook - especially when you are truly tired and the heat is so oppressive! I hope you get your run in, if it's what you want to do. The lake sounds more enticing, though.

    1. With my level of exhaustion, it was a no brainer. I still feel fatigued right now. I hope it is better next week. The lake was nice (but hot). We mostly just cruised around looking at all the houses.

  3. For us it's a sudden onslaught of heat, so it's definitely a difficult adjustment. For me, that is translating into some treadmill runs. I can't say as I love that, but I love it more than slogging through the mess outside and then being so wiped out that I can barely move (plus I'm already out at 5:30 walking the dogs, so no early runs for me!).

I can't imagine doing a double digit run before work!

    1. I did many double digits run before work while marathon training and enjoyed them more then than I did on the weekends. I'm not sure why though.

  4. It's amazing how the heat/humidity really wears you down and makes you so tired! (not you, I mean everyone.) You can SEE the heat sizzling in your pictures, ha! Good for you for still fitting in runs!

    1. I admit if I didn't have RnR Chi on the immediate horizon, I would be clocking many miles at all right now.

  5. Usually the heat doesn't bother me, but this weekend man was it hot. You know it is hot when there is heat advisories for the northeast! So no runs this weekend, heck walking was even a challenge!

    1. I can usually get in the water or in the boat and cope with the heat. Or even cycle. But this year, I'm having a hard time doing anything outside. And the mosquitoes are eating me alive!

  6. The runs in the heat are definitely so much more draining for me. The lake sounds like the place to be!

    1. It's even hot at the lake! The WATER was 93 degrees today. The water!

  7. Minnesota’s got nothing on the heat and humidity where you are, but the high 80’s and low 90’s plus 90% has been killing me here! Early morning running is my only solution (or treadmill). The early a.m. temps are much cooler here, making the humidity bearable. Isn’t it funny how drastically the weather changes?! Very few days above 0°F over the winter and now nearly 90°F every day this coming week! 😂

    1. Those are two weather extremes you've got going in Minnesota! I think a lot of the country had it rough this week.

  8. I can honestly say that I feel you. This summer has been brutal! We did get a short lived break in the heat this week, which felt good. Hey, at least I'll be acclimated when I come down there in August!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. When you came last August, we actually had some cooler temps. Remember? Maybe we'll get lucky again. Although, I want it to be sunny and warm for skiing. I can't be pleased. LOL.

  9. Its been rough with the heat, and I'm sure its even worse for you! I considered running today but it's been in the high 90s all weekend and I definitely needed a rest day after yesterday's long run.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The long runs are definitely extra draining right now. I wouldn't be able to run the next day either.

  10. I think the heat got to a lot of runners this week - triple digit indexes are no joke!

    1. I do too. I think much of the country suffered through triple digit heat indexes.

  11. It was quite a warm week here too, and not as cool on the weekend as they said it would be. I got my run done yesterday, and I should've been out there earlier. It warmed up quickly today too.

    1. When I was in CO last month, I was amazed at how quickly it warmed up in the mornings!

  12. Sounds like sensible times for you. We've got up to 84 today which is shocking for the UK even though seems a bit weedy for all your folks with REAL heat. I have linked to my one single run, cut short by a fall, but some pics from the athletics at least ... Hope this coming week is a better one for you.

    1. I think HOT was the theme for most everyone this week! I'm glad you weren't hurt and can get back to running this week! Hopefully, we'll get a break (at least with the morning temps) soon.

    2. Our heatwave is set for another 2 weeks! Fortunately I have next week off so can run at 6am without being bothered I'm missing stuff from my clients (who have weird schedules). I went for a run today so seem to be OK, phew!

  13. I'm a moron that never seems to wake up to run in the morning so I'm kind of use to the heat at this point. It was miserable out there today though. I hope it gets a little cooler for all of us next week. I think you're smart to listen to your body and take things easier. I definitely go a lot slower when it's hot like this.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I can't push the pace in this heat. My body just won't do it. It is hard to accept that. It's like a switch was abruptly flipped. You don't get to ease into slower paces. It just happens overnight. LOL.

  14. I thought of you on my crazy stupid humid run this morning. If Holly can do this almost every single day of the year, I can do this right now. Although I did cut my run short because I then thought, F-this. I'm not training for a long distance race right now so why am I trying go long! :)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Ha! That's funny. Holly is whining (and possibly swearing) the whole time too. I do have a few blessedly cool, long-awaited winter months that I cling to, else I'd go insane.

  15. I avoid the heat as much as I can, haha! Loving my swim workouts and pool time very much as our temps are pretty much the same as yours and humid too. If I was running, I wouldn't be able to in this soup. Good job getting in so many good miles in it!

    ReplyDelete

    1. I didn't realize that about your climate! I saw a picture of the pool you swim in. That's is a very nice facility.

      Delete
  16. Nice mileage! That pool looks so inviting! We are supposed to have temperatures in the high 90s and even 100 this week. Sounds like I will need to get out early!

    1. Getting out early does help, although it is when the humidity is highest and the air usually still. It's a trade-off for the afternoon heat.

  17. Wow, that's a good amount of runs this week! It was HOT this week, but I got out for a run this weekend - first one postpartum!

  18. Girl, you are singing my song! Ugh! It is awful here. I barely feel like I’m even running at this point, more like slogging along. Winter will be here eventually, right?

    1. I know you have it worse than I do! I can't imagine how you are sticking with it. Yes, what little winter we have WILL eventually be here. We have to relish every minute of it!

  19. Way to go in the heat! So glad it's not that bad over here and I can still get in a cooler morning run. Good luck to your grandson's baseball team!

  20. We've been under a heat advisory here in Virginia for what feels like forever now. The only way to cope with the heat is to just keep moving and not make excuses. I've been slowing down and drinking lots of extra water. That's about all that I can do. Hopefully we'll all get a break from the heat sooner than later.

    1. I definitely am running slower and drinking more as well!

    1. That's pretty brutal. I don't like triple digit indexes at all!

  24. Heat indexes were nuts last week (and this week). I had one day where it was okay, but the rest of the week was just...ugh. Plus I got all off schedule and couldn't get back into the groove. Oh, well, right? Weeks like that happen. Humidity really can suck the life right out of you and leave you exhausted. At least we're getting out there!

    1. I don't know why if feels so much hotter this year. It's probably not. I may be struggling mentally more than physically?

  26. it IS hard in the heat, but I think if I lived where you lived I would also definitely get out as early as I could. I know the few times I was at my parents' in New Mexico in the summer, we'd be out the door by 6am otherwise it would be too hot They live in high desert too so then you have the altitude as well!! I do not envy you guys, though I do envy the pool ;)

(not linking up this week - I have unfortunately a lot to do in the coming days and I wouldn't be able to make it around all the blogs!)

    1. The problem with early is that the humidity is at it's highest. It's the swampiest time of day but not as hot. It's a trade off.

    1. August is typically our worst summer weather month. I'm not looking forward to it. Fingers crossed we both luck out!
